CalFresh customer service rep told me P-EBT 4.0 cards don't get reloaded - is this right??
I am BEYOND frustrated right now! I called the EBT customer service line this morning to find out when my kids' P-EBT 4.0 cards would be reloaded for the next benefit period. The rep had the NERVE to tell me that the P-EBT 4.0 cards don't get reloaded at all! I've been getting these benefits for my children since the program started and KNOW FOR A FACT they reload quarterly. Has anyone else been told this complete nonsense? I swear these workers just make stuff up when they don't know the answer instead of checking with someone who does. I didn't argue because I was already on hold for 45 minutes and didn't want to get disconnected, but now I'm worried. Are they changing the program for 2025 or was this guy just completely clueless about his own job??

The rep was definitely wrong. P-EBT 4.0 cards absolutely DO get reloaded quarterly. The next issuance date should be February 15th for the winter quarter benefits. I've worked with families navigating these benefits for years, and this kind of misinformation happens all the time. The regular EBT customer service reps often get confused between regular CalFresh, P-EBT, and other benefit programs. Next time, ask to speak with a supervisor who will likely have more accurate information.

•Thank you!! I KNEW he was wrong but started doubting myself. My kids would go hungry without those benefits so I got scared. Why do they put people on the phones who don't know basic program info?? So frustrating!

•They definitely don't save money by providing incorrect information - it's just poor training. The P-EBT and CalFresh programs are funded differently, and customer service reps don't have any financial incentive to deny benefits. But I understand the frustration when you receive contradictory information about something so important for your family.

For anyone having trouble getting accurate info about P-EBT or regular CalFresh benefits, I recently discovered a service called Claimyr that helped me TREMENDOUSLY. Instead of waiting on hold forever, they actually call the county office for you and connect you when a real person answers. I was skeptical but tried their video demo (https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8) and then used it to resolve my own P-EBT issue last month. Saved me literally hours of hold time and I got connected to someone who actually knew the program details. Check out claimyr.com - seriously life-changing for dealing with these offices!

The whole P-EBT system is a JOKE. I've had THREE different answers about reloading schedules in the past year alone. One worker said quarterly, another said it depends on school district reporting, and a third said it's based on some complicated formula. WHICH IS IT?? And don't get me started on the website - never updated, always showing outdated info. The whole system is designed to CONFUSE parents so we just give up and they save money. My kids haven't received benefits in 8 months despite qualifying!!!!

•I understand your frustration, but there's actually a reason for the confusion. P-EBT 4.0 does have quarterly issuance for most families, but there are exceptions based on school reporting and eligibility changes. The website is supposed to be updated monthly, but they've been behind schedule this year. If your children haven't received benefits in 8 months despite qualifying, you should file a formal appeal - there's a specific form for P-EBT disputes that many parents don't know about. Happy to share more info if that would help.

•That's actually smart advice! I'm going to call again tomorrow and hopefully get someone who knows what they're talking about. So annoying we have to do this though!

What's really confusing is that there are actually different types of P-EBT cards. The original pandemic ones were one-time use, but the 4.0 program (which started in 2023) does have quarterly reloads for eligible children. The summer P-EBT is different from the school-year P-EBT. And then there's regular CalFresh which is monthly. So I can see why some reps get confused, but they should be better trained! For your specific question - yes, P-EBT 4.0 cards ARE reloadable for eligible children. The next issuance should be mid-February 2025 for the winter quarter. You can verify this on the official CDSS P-EBT webpage (though they're notoriously slow at updating it).

•Thank you for explaining this! I didn't realize there were so many different types. That might explain why the rep was confused. But still... shouldn't they have access to this info at their fingertips? I appreciate you confirming the February date - that lines up with when we got it last year.

Have you tried checking your balance on the EBT app? Sometimes the benefits get loaded early and they don't tell you. My daughter's P-EBT had $391 added last week even though nobody told us it was coming. The app shows all transactions and upcoming deposits.

•I didn't know there was an app that works with P-EBT! I've been calling the number on the back of the card like a cave woman lol. Is it the same app as regular CalFresh EBT? Going to download it right now!

GUYS i just looked this up and there's a policy change coming in March 2025 where they're supposedly "streamlining" P-EBT with regular school lunch programs. I bet that's why the customer service people are confused - typical government nonsense changing things without telling anyone including THEIR OWN EMPLOYEES!!! This affects thousands of families and they can't even bother to train their staff properly.

•You're partially correct. There is a program change coming, but it's not eliminating the reloads. They're actually integrating the P-EBT system with the regular EBT system so families will get all benefits on one card instead of separate cards. The quarterly schedule remains the same, and benefit amounts aren't changing. This is actually a positive change that should reduce confusion, though the transition might be bumpy as these things often are. Current P-EBT 4.0 cards will continue to be reloaded through August 2025, after which the integration happens.

Update: I called again today and spoke with someone different who confirmed the P-EBT 4.0 cards DO get reloaded quarterly! She said the next deposit will be February 11-15 (depending on your case number). She also apologized for the misinformation and said they just had a training about this very issue because too many parents were being told incorrect info. So if anyone else runs into this problem, DEFINITELY call back and speak to someone else!

So glad you called back and got the correct information! This is exactly why I always tell people in my neighborhood to never accept the first answer when it comes to benefits - especially with something as important as feeding your kids. The fact that they had to do a training specifically about this issue shows how widespread the misinformation problem is. It's really concerning that customer service reps are giving out wrong info about programs that families depend on. Thanks for updating us with the February 11-15 timeline - that's super helpful for other parents who might be wondering the same thing!

•This whole thread has been so helpful! I'm new to the P-EBT program (just moved to California) and was totally confused about how it all works. Reading everyone's experiences makes me feel less alone in dealing with these frustrating customer service issues. It's ridiculous that families have to become experts in benefits programs just to get accurate information. Thank you Chloe for following up with the update - saves the rest of us from having to deal with misinformed reps!
