CalFresh EBT card skimming after using grocery delivery - Connection or coincidence?
So my CalFresh EBT card got skimmed last month and ALL my benefits ($847) disappeared overnight. Filed a report with BenefitsCal and they're investigating, but it could take up to 90 days for them to decide if they'll reimburse me. My kids and I are struggling BAD right now. I've been thinking about what could have happened and realized I started using GroceryDirect delivery service about 2 months ago (they accept EBT online). Has anyone else who experienced skimming used grocery delivery services? Wondering if there's a connection or if I'm just being paranoid. How are thieves even getting our card info these days?

Omg yes!!!! This happened to me too after I used FarmBox delivery. All $562 gone the day after I used it online. Called the EBT customer service and they were useless. Said I needed to file with the county. So frustrating

•How long ago did this happen to you? Did you ever get your benefits back? I'm literally feeding my kids ramen and whatever's left in the pantry right now.

I work for a nonprofit that helps with CalFresh issues, and unfortunately, we're seeing a huge increase in EBT skimming cases in 2025. The connection to delivery services is interesting, but most skimming actually happens at physical card terminals with hidden skimming devices. Make sure you've done these things: 1. Report to BenefitsCal AND call the EBT customer service line to flag your account 2. Request a new card immediately with a different PIN 3. File a police report (this speeds up the investigation) 4. Ask your county worker for emergency replacement benefits while you wait The 90-day timeline is the maximum, but most determinations happen within 30-45 days if you've provided all documentation.

•does filing a police report actually help? the cops in my area dont care about this stuff at all lol they basically told me it was the county's problem when my card got skimmed

•Yes, a police report definitely helps. Even if local police don't actively investigate (and most don't), having an official report number speeds up the county's investigation process and increases your chances of getting benefits replaced faster. It's essentially documentation that you've taken all proper steps to report the theft.

I had my card skimmed in March after using my CalFresh EBT at a regular grocery store - never used any delivery service. Lost $735. The county took almost exactly 30 days to complete the investigation and they did reimburse me fully. Make sure you check your BenefitsCal account daily for notices or requests for additional information. Also, they told me to always inspect the card reader before inserting my card and to change my PIN monthly. Apparently the skimming devices are getting really sophisticated and hard to detect.

•That's reassuring to hear you got your benefits back! I've been checking BenefitsCal obsessively. Did you have to keep calling them or did they just process it without you following up?

Have u tried calling the county directly to get a status on ur claim? I spent 3 HOURS on hold last week just trying to reach someone about my recertification and kept getting disconnected!!! This system is literally DESIGNED to prevent us from getting help!!!

•I had the same frustrating experience trying to reach someone about my skimming case. After getting disconnected 4 times, I found this service called Claimyr that got me through to a live person in about 15 minutes. They basically wait on hold for you and call when a worker picks up. Was totally worth it for me since I needed to talk to someone ASAP about my stolen benefits. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8

i dont think its the delivery service tbh...my card got skimmed and i NEVER used it online, only at the store. thieves put those little skimmer things on the card readers in stores that look exactly like the real thing. ive heard gas stations are really bad for this too

•That's scary! So maybe it happened when I swiped at the actual store. How are we supposed to know if the card reader has been tampered with?

Happened to my cousin last year. She said the CalFresh office gave her emergency benefits while they investigated but only like half of what she normally gets. You should definitely ask about that when you call them. Better than nothing while you wait.

•Thank you! I didn't even know emergency benefits were an option. Will definitely ask about that tomorrow.

To protect yourself from future skimming, here are some best practices: 1. Check for loose or unusual parts on card readers before inserting your EBT card 2. Cover the keypad when entering your PIN 3. Sign up for EBT transaction alerts through the ConnectEBT app 4. Change your PIN immediately after using your card at a location you don't frequently visit 5. Consider withdrawing cash benefits (if you have them) all at once from secure locations like bank ATMs As for online grocery delivery services, they generally use encrypted systems, but it's still good practice to use your card on secure networks and check your balance frequently.

•wait theres an app that sends alerts?? why doesnt anyone tell us this stuff when we sign up for calfresh????

•Yes, the ConnectEBT app allows you to set up notifications for transactions. Unfortunately, many eligibility workers don't mention all these security features during the application process because they're primarily focused on determining eligibility. The app also lets you check your balance, transaction history, and find nearby retailers that accept EBT.

I used to work in cyber security and this is a HUGE problem now. These scammers target benefit programs specifically because they know the system is slow to respond and many families can't wait. One trick I learned is to transfer benefits to a separate EBT account if your county allows it - keep minimal funds on your main card and move money over as needed.

•That's brilliant! I never thought about splitting up the benefits as a security measure. I'm going to ask if Santa Clara County allows this. Thank you!

•SB-583 passed last year, which requires counties to provide provisional credits within 10 days for skimming victims while investigations are pending. However, the implementation has been inconsistent across counties. If your benefits were stolen, specifically mention this law when speaking with your county worker, as some may not be fully trained on the new requirements yet.
