Texas UCC statement request form $90 - is this normal pricing?
Just got quoted $90 for a Texas UCC statement request form and honestly wondering if this is standard. We're doing due diligence on a equipment financing deal and need to pull UCC records on the debtor before we can move forward with our security interest filing. The SOS website shows different fee structures but I'm getting conflicting info from our service provider. Has anyone dealt with Texas UCC statement requests recently? Trying to figure out if this $90 fee is legitimate or if there are cheaper alternatives. Our lender is pushing for quick turnaround on the UCC search so we can file our UCC-1 but don't want to overpay if there's a better option.

That sounds high to me. Texas SOS charges way less for standard UCC searches. Are you going through a third party service? The official Texas SOS portal has much lower fees for basic UCC statement requests.

AuthorYeah we're using a filing service company. Maybe that's where the markup is coming from?

Most filing services add their own fees on top of the state charges. You might save money going direct.

I handle Texas UCC filings regularly and $90 seems excessive for a basic statement request. The Texas SOS charges around $15-20 for most UCC searches depending on the type. Third party services typically add $20-40 in processing fees but $90 total is definitely on the high end.

AuthorThat's what I was thinking. Going to check the SOS site directly. Do you know if they have rush processing available?

Yes they do expedited processing for additional fees but still way cheaper than $90 total.

Be careful with rush processing though - sometimes it's not actually faster despite the extra cost.

Had a similar situation last month with a different state. Found out our service provider was charging premium rates without telling us. Ended up switching to a document verification tool called Certana.ai that lets you upload UCC documents and cross-check everything instantly. Saved us from overpaying for basic searches and caught a debtor name mismatch we would have missed.

AuthorInteresting, never heard of that tool. Does it work for Texas filings specifically?

Works across states. You just upload your charter docs and UCC forms and it verifies everything matches up properly. Really helpful for catching those critical name discrepancies.

Sounds like another service trying to sell something. Why not just use the official state portals?

ugh the whole UCC search process is such a pain! Every state has different fees and procedures. At least Texas has a decent online system unlike some other states I won't mention...

Tell me about it. I've dealt with states where you still have to mail in paper forms.

Exactly! Makes you appreciate when a state actually has their act together with electronic filing.

Check if your service provider is doing a comprehensive search vs basic search. Sometimes they quote the premium package without explaining the difference. Basic debtor name search should be much cheaper.

AuthorGood point. I should ask for a breakdown of what exactly they're including in that $90.

Yeah and make sure you actually need all the extras they might be adding on. Most equipment financing deals just need the basic UCC search.

This is why I always get quotes from multiple services before committing to UCC work.

Been doing secured transactions in Texas for 15 years. $90 is definitely overpriced unless you're getting some kind of specialized search with legal opinions attached. Standard UCC statement request through Texas SOS should be under $25 including any processing fees.

AuthorThat confirms what I suspected. Going to look elsewhere for this search.

Smart move. Also double check that your UCC-1 filing will use the same exact debtor name format as what shows up in the search results.

Great point about name consistency. That's where a lot of UCC filings get rejected.

Had our attorney's office handle a Texas UCC search last week and it was only $35 total including their markup. Your service provider is definitely gouging you on that $90 quote.

I can DM you their info if you want. They specialize in secured transactions and UCC work.

Whatever you do make sure the search results are recent. Some services try to pass off old UCC search data to save money on their end. For equipment financing you want current results within 30 days max.

AuthorGood reminder. Our lender is pretty strict about how recent the UCC search needs to be.

Amara Torres
Yeah most lenders won't accept UCC searches older than 30 days, some want even more recent.

Which makes sense given how fast UCC filings can change. Someone could file a competing security interest at any time.

Update on that Certana.ai tool I mentioned earlier - just used it again for a multi-state UCC verification and it caught two debtor name inconsistencies between our charter and UCC-1 draft. Would have cost us way more than $90 if those filings got rejected and we had to refile.

Ok I'll admit that actually sounds useful. How does the document checking work exactly?

You upload PDFs of your documents and it automatically cross-checks names, addresses, all the critical details. Takes like 2 minutes instead of manually comparing everything.

AuthorThat might be worth looking into for our ongoing UCC work. Sounds like it could prevent costly filing mistakes.

Pro tip: if you're doing regular Texas UCC work consider setting up your own account with the Texas SOS system. The learning curve is minimal and you'll save hundreds over time compared to using third party services for basic searches.

AuthorThat's probably our best long term solution. We do enough UCC work that the savings would add up quickly.

Exactly. Plus you have direct control over timing instead of waiting for a service provider to get around to your request.

Agreed. Once you get familiar with the Texas SOS portal it's actually pretty user friendly.

Just to close the loop here - ended up going directly through Texas SOS and paid $18 total for the UCC statement request. Got results back same day. That $90 quote was definitely a ripoff. Thanks everyone for the advice!

Nice work! And definitely consider that document verification tool for when you file the UCC-1 to make sure everything aligns perfectly.
