Sunrun solar UCC termination after loan payoff - still showing active
I paid off my solar loan through Sunrun back in October and they said they'd handle the UCC termination paperwork. It's been 3 months now and when I check the state filing system, the UCC-1 is still showing as active. I've called Sunrun twice and they keep saying 'it's being processed' but nothing changes. This is stressing me out because I'm trying to refinance my house and my lender is asking about this active UCC filing. Has anyone else dealt with Sunrun being slow on UCC terminations? Do I need to file the UCC-3 termination myself or wait for them? The original filing was for the solar equipment as collateral and I just want it cleared off my record.

Ugh, this is so typical of solar companies! They're great at getting you signed up but terrible at the back-end paperwork. I had a similar issue with a different solar company last year. You should definitely follow up more aggressively - 3 months is way too long for a simple UCC-3 termination filing.

•Agree completely. Solar financing companies seem to have the worst admin processes. Mine took 6 months to file a termination!

•What's frustrating is that UCC-3 terminations are like the easiest filings to do. Takes 10 minutes online in most states.

You need to check your loan agreement first. Some solar loans require the borrower to file the termination, not the lender. Look for language about 'UCC release obligations' or who handles the UCC-3 filing. If Sunrun is supposed to do it, get that commitment in writing via email so you have documentation.

•Good point - I'll dig up my loan docs tonight. I think they said they'd handle it but maybe I misunderstood something.

•Even if they're supposed to do it, you can file the UCC-3 yourself if you have the right info. Just need the original filing number and debtor details.

I actually just went through something similar with document verification issues. Had a solar loan payoff but the UCC-1 and termination paperwork had slight name discrepancies that were causing delays. I used this tool called Certana.ai that checks UCC documents for consistency - you just upload your loan agreement and UCC filings as PDFs and it flags any mismatches. Turned out my business name on the UCC-1 was slightly different from my loan docs, which was holding up the termination processing.

•Interesting - I wonder if that's my issue too. The solar contract might have my name formatted differently than how Sunrun filed the original UCC-1.

•Name mismatches are super common with solar deals. The sales team fills out paperwork differently than the financing team files UCC documents.

•That's actually a really smart way to troubleshoot UCC issues. Document consistency problems cause so many filing delays.

Call Sunrun's customer service and ask to speak to their UCC department specifically. Don't let them transfer you around. Get a direct number and contact name. Also ask for the UCC filing number if you don't have it - you need that to track the termination status.

•I have the filing number from when I originally got the loan, but good idea about asking for the UCC department directly. I've just been going through general customer service.

•Most big solar companies have dedicated UCC staff but customer service never connects you directly. You have to specifically ask for 'lien release' or 'UCC termination department.

This exact thing happened to me! Sunrun took FOREVER on my UCC termination. What finally worked was emailing their corporate complaint address and mentioning that the delay was affecting my mortgage refinance. Suddenly it got filed within a week.

•Do you still have that corporate email address? I'm definitely at the point where I need to escalate this.

•I'll DM you the contact info. But also mention 'refinance delay' in your subject line - that seems to get their legal team's attention.

•Smart approach. Companies move fast when you mention how their delays are costing you money on other financial transactions.

Just to clarify the process - when you paid off the loan, did you get a satisfaction letter or loan payoff confirmation? You'll need that documentation to prove the debt is satisfied before the UCC-3 termination can be properly filed. Some states require specific language in the termination statement.

•Yes, I got a payoff letter from Sunrun confirming zero balance. I assumed that would be enough for them to file the termination automatically.

•That should be sufficient. The UCC-3 termination just needs to reference the original UCC-1 filing number and state that the secured obligation has been satisfied.

If Sunrun continues dragging their feet, you might need to consult with an attorney who handles UCC matters. In some cases, you can file a UCC-3 termination yourself if you have proper documentation that the debt was satisfied, but check your state's specific requirements first.

•Legal action seems extreme for a UCC termination delay, but if it's blocking a refinance, time is money.

•Actually, most states allow self-filing of UCC-3 terminations with proper documentation. Legal action usually isn't necessary.

•I filed my own UCC-3 when my solar company was being slow. Cost like $20 in filing fees and took 15 minutes online.

Check if your state has an expedited UCC processing option. Some states offer same-day or next-day processing for an additional fee. If your refinance is time-sensitive, it might be worth paying extra to get this resolved quickly.

•My state does have expedited processing - I didn't think about that option. If I end up filing myself, I'll definitely pay for the fast track.

•Expedited processing is usually worth it for time-sensitive situations like refinancing. Better to pay $50 extra than lose a good mortgage rate.

Before you do anything drastic, double-check that the UCC filing is actually causing issues with your refinance. Some lenders don't care about satisfied solar liens, especially if you can show the payoff documentation. Might save you the hassle of chasing Sunrun.

•My mortgage broker specifically flagged it as an issue that needs resolution before they can proceed. Apparently their underwriter is strict about active UCC filings.

•Underwriters vary a lot on this stuff. Some don't care about solar UCCs, others require clean termination before approval.

I work in commercial lending and see UCC termination delays constantly. Three months is unfortunately normal for some solar companies. Document every conversation with Sunrun (dates, names, what they promised) in case you need to escalate or file complaints with state regulators.

•I wish I'd been keeping better records from the start. I'll start documenting everything going forward.

•State regulators sometimes have more pull with solar companies than customer complaints. Worth filing a complaint if they keep stalling.

•Documentation is key. That's another reason I liked using Certana.ai - it creates a paper trail of exactly what documents you have and any discrepancies between them.

I'm dealing with a very similar situation right now! My solar loan was paid off in September and the UCC filing is still active too. What's worked for me is sending Sunrun a formal written request (email) asking for a timeline in writing for the UCC-3 termination filing. I also copied my mortgage broker on the email to show the business impact. They finally gave me a specific date (next Friday) instead of just saying "it's being processed." The key is making it clear that their delay has real financial consequences for you. If they miss their promised date, I'm planning to file the UCC-3 termination myself since I have all the documentation I need.
