Finally got my FAFSA through - anyone else receiving aid packages earlier than expected?

Just wanted to share some unexpected good news! After battling the FAFSA system for what feels like FOREVER, my daughter's application finally processed! We submitted back in early January and it was stuck in verification purgatory until last week. The university she's planning to attend emailed yesterday saying they received her FAFSA data and her aid package will arrive within 2 weeks (way sooner than the mid-May timeline they originally quoted). I know a lot of folks are still struggling with delays, but there seems to be movement happening. Anyone else suddenly seeing progress with their 2025-2026 applications?

omg congrats!!! still waiting over here... submitted in December and NOTHING. not even showing as processed. so frustrating.

Thanks! Have you tried calling the Federal Student Aid hotline? I know it's a nightmare getting through, but we finally connected with someone who manually reviewed our application and found it was stuck due to a random verification flag.

This is encouraging to hear! The whole FAFSA simplification has been anything but simple this year. The biggest issue has been the SAI (Student Aid Index) calculation delays - my students who submitted in December are just now getting their aid packages calculated. The good news is that many schools are being more flexible with commitment deadlines because of these FAFSA delays.

Is the SAI the same thing as the EFC from previous years? I'm so confused by all these new terms.

Great question! The SAI (Student Aid Index) replaced the old EFC (Expected Family Contribution) starting with the 2025-2026 FAFSA. While they serve similar functions in determining aid eligibility, the SAI uses a modified formula that's supposed to be more accurate for today's families. The calculation now treats single-parent households differently and has adjusted how certain assets are counted.

our aid package was WAY lower than expected, like $12k lower than last year even though our income only went up like $5k. check it carefully when you get it.

Oh no, that's concerning! Did you contact the financial aid office to appeal? I've heard some schools have additional institutional funds they can use for appeals.

yea we tried but they said something about the new SAI formula and how they cant override federal calculations. super frustrating

Been trying to call Federal Student Aid for 3 WEEKS to check why my son's application is stuck showing "processing" with no movement. Literally cannot get through - just disconnects after 2 hours on hold! Anyone know a better way to contact them? This is ridiculous when his college decision deadline is May 1st and we have NO idea what aid he'll receive!

I was in the same situation until I found Claimyr.com - it's this service that holds your place in the FSA phone queue and calls you when an agent is about to answer. Saved me literally hours of my life. Their video shows how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ We finally got through and discovered my daughter's app was stuck because our tax info from the IRS Data Retrieval Tool didn't properly connect to her application. The agent fixed it on the spot.

Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this! I'm going to try it tonight. At this point I'd do anything to get a human on the phone who can actually explain what's happening with his application.

My daughter's application finally processed after 9 weeks (submitted Jan 2, processed March 8). One tip: check that your FAFSA confirmation page shows ALL household members correctly. Ours had somehow dropped my younger daughter, which triggered a whole verification process. Also, if your student has ANY income, even just summer job money, make sure it's reported accurately. Even small discrepancies between what's on their W-2 and what's reported can flag the application for further review.

That's a really good point about the household members! I actually think that might have been our issue too. The confirmation page looked right when we submitted, but when I logged back in later, one of our dependents wasn't showing correctly.

my son got his aid package last week, and they gave him a pell grant even though we make too much for that i think?? not complaining but wonder if that's an error that will get fixed later

The Pell Grant eligibility did change with the new FAFSA. Families with incomes up to around $90,000 can now qualify for some Pell funding depending on family size and other factors. It used to cap much lower. So your son's award may be correct! I wouldn't worry about it being rescinded if the information you provided was accurate.

I've been working in financial aid for 12 years and this is THE WORST rollout I've ever seen. The simplified FAFSA was supposed to make things easier but the technical problems have been endless. Please be patient with your schools' financial aid offices - we're just as frustrated as you are! One tip: if your student is deciding between schools, contact each financial aid office directly. Many have institutional funds they can use while waiting for official FAFSA processing.

Thanks for this insider perspective! It's helpful to know the schools are struggling with this too. I was worried my daughter's college was just being slow, but sounds like they're dealing with a mess on their end as well.

They seem to be processing in random batches rather than chronologically. My neighbor submitted in February and got processed before us (we submitted in January). Try logging into studentaid.gov to check your current status - might have updated without you getting a notification.
