FAFSA system error when entering parent information - can't complete form
Super frustrated with the FAFSA site right now! My daughter is trying to input my information as her parent, but we keep getting this 'Unable to Complete This Action' error message. Every time she clicks to invite me to the form, the system crashes and tells us to exit and try again. We've already tried logging out, clearing browser cache, using different devices (both her laptop and my desktop), and even waiting 24 hours to try again. Still getting the same error! This is the 4th day we've been stuck on this step and her priority deadline is coming up next week. Has anyone else dealt with this specific error when trying to add parent information? Any solutions that actually worked?

It's so frustrating! Did you try calling the FSA helpline? We tried yesterday but gave up after being on hold for 45 minutes.

I work in a financial aid office and we're seeing this problem frequently with the new FAFSA system. The error typically happens because of one of these issues:\n\n1. Browser compatibility - try using Chrome in incognito mode\n2. Parent FSA ID setup issues - make sure your FSA ID is fully verified\n3. System is overloaded during peak hours\n\nThe most effective solution we've found is to have the student start a completely new FAFSA session during off-peak hours (early morning or late evening) and immediately invite the parent. Don't fill out other sections first.

Thank you for these suggestions! We'll try starting over with a new session tonight around 10pm. Do you think we should create a new FSA ID for me (parent) as well? Or just use the existing one?

Keep your existing FSA ID, but make sure it's fully verified. If you've received an email confirmation that your FSA ID is linked to your SSN, you should be good to go. Just to be safe, log in to your FSA ID account separately before attempting the FAFSA invitation process.

Try using Claimyr to get through to a FAFSA agent directly. I was stuck with this exact same error for almost a week and wasted hours on hold. Found this service at claimyr.com that got me connected to an actual FSA agent in under 15 minutes. The agent had to manually adjust something on their end to fix the invitation system for my account. There's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ - totally worth it when you're facing deadlines!

Thanks for the suggestion! At this point I'm willing to try anything. Did the agent explain what was causing the error in the first place?

Yes! The agent said there was a glitch in how the system was handling the parent-student linking process. Apparently if either of you had an older FAFSA account from previous years, sometimes the system gets confused with the new

That's interesting! We are both using gmail accounts actually. I'll have my daughter try using her college email instead. Thanks for the tip!

This is a known systemic issue with the 2024-2025 FAFSA. The error occurs when the system can't properly link the student and parent accounts, typically because of one of two reasons:\n\n1. Data mismatch between student and parent information (even something minor like address formatting)\n2. Backend database communication error\n\nBesides the suggestions already mentioned, try these specific steps:\n\n- Have the STUDENT initiate a brand new FAFSA session using Chrome incognito\n- Before doing ANYTHING else, immediately go to the \

These are really specific and helpful steps, thank you! I'm going to have my daughter start fresh tonight following this exact process. I'll make sure my name matches perfectly with my FSA ID too. If we're still stuck after trying this, I'll definitely call her school's financial aid office tomorrow.

lol they said this years fafsa would be easier but its a total disaster my daughters been trying since january!!! now shes gonna miss scholarships because of their stupid system errors this is RIDICULOUS

You're right that it's been problematic, but students won't necessarily miss scholarships. Many schools are extending their priority deadlines because of the widespread FAFSA issues. Have your daughter contact her school's financial aid office to explain the situation - most are being very accommodating this year.

UPDATE: We got it working! For anyone else with this issue, here's what finally worked:\n\n1. Daughter started a completely new FAFSA application at 5am (off-peak hours)\n2. Used Chrome incognito as suggested\n3. Made sure we used different email domains (she used her .edu address)\n4. I logged into my FSA ID account separately first to make sure it was active\n5. When entering my name in the invitation, she typed it EXACTLY as it appears on my FSA ID, including my middle initial\n\nThe invitation went through and I was able to complete my section without any errors! Thanks everyone for your help - especially the tip about different email domains and exactly matching the FSA ID name.

Great to hear! Thanks for updating the thread with what worked. This will help others with the same issue. Make sure to fully submit the application now - don't leave it in progress.

Thank you so much for posting your solution! I was about to give up after trying for the 5th time, but I followed your steps exactly and it worked! The email domain difference was key for us.

As someone who just went through this nightmare last month, I can confirm that the email domain issue is real! My son and I were both using our family's custom domain email (@ourfamilyname.com) and kept getting the same error. Once we switched to completely different providers (he used his school email, I used my work email), it worked immediately. Also want to add - if you're still having trouble, try doing it on a weekday morning around 6-7am EST. The system seems much more stable during those hours when fewer people are online. Good luck to anyone still struggling with this!
