FAFSA spouse contributor SSN showing blank - husband didn't receive consent email?
I'm about to pull my hair out with this FAFSA contributor issue! I completed my 2025-26 application last week, but now the system is showing my husband's SSN as blank. When I try to edit it, the field is locked. I just chatted with a FAFSA rep who said my husband needs to give consent for me to input his SSN and that they apparently sent him an email invitation to do this. Problem is - he hasn't received ANY email about this, and when he logs into his own studentaid.gov account, there's absolutely nothing there about needing to provide consent. No notifications, no emails, nothing in his dashboard. Has anyone dealt with this spouse SSN glitch? Did you find a solution? I'm worried this will delay my application processing and impact my aid package.

•3 weeks?! Ugh, that's terrifying. Have you been able to make any progress at all? Did they at least confirm they can see the issue on their end?

This is a known issue with the new FAFSA system. The contributor consent emails are being sent, but many are getting caught in spam filters or not being delivered at all. Your husband needs to log into studentaid.gov with his FSA ID, go to "My Documents," and look for the consent notification there. If nothing shows up, you'll need to call FSA directly (not chat) and ask them to resend the contributor invitation. Make sure your husband's email is correctly listed in both your account and his.

•Thank you! I just checked his account again and there's nothing in his Documents section. I've been trying to call FSA for two days but can't get through - just endless holds and then disconnects. I'll keep trying though. At least I know where to look now.

I HAD THIS EXACT PROBLEM!! The stupid system wouldn't let me put in my husband's SSN either! After HOURS of frustration I figured out that he needed to complete his own FSA ID verification process first. For some reason the system won't let you add contributor SSNs unless they've fully verified their identity in their own account. The email thing is complete BS - there is no email. Have him log in and check if his identity verification is complete.

•OMG thank you for this! I just texted my husband and he said he never finished the ID verification when he set up his account. He's going to do that tonight. Fingers crossed this fixes it!

•Let me know if it works! It took like 2-3 days after he verified before the system updated and let me add his SSN. The whole process is a nightmare this year.

I worked through this exact issue last month with my wife's information. What finally fixed it was having her create a brand new FSA ID (even though she already had one). The FAFSA system is having trouble linking existing contributor accounts. Once she created the new FSA ID, I received a notification in MY account to send her a contributor invitation. I never had to enter her SSN at all - once she accepted the invitation through her new account, her information populated automatically. The phone support never mentioned this solution - I discovered it from another parent in my situation.

•That's interesting! So did she have to abandon her old FSA ID completely? My husband has been using his for years for our older child's FAFSA, so I'm worried about creating complications with that account too.

•Yes, she basically had to abandon the old one. You're right to be concerned if he's been using it for your older child. In our case, we didn't have that issue. You might want to call and specifically ask about how to handle this situation with existing FSA IDs that are already linked to other students.

Try calling right when they open at 8am eastern. I had this SSN issue with my husband's info and finally got through after trying at different times. The representative manually sent the contributor invitation while I was on the phone, and my husband got it instantly. Apparently there's a glitch where the automated emails aren't being sent properly, but they can force it through from their end.

•Thanks for the tip! I'll try early tomorrow morning. I've been calling mid-day and it's been impossible.

I had this exact contributor SSN issue last month. After trying everything else, I finally got through to a helpful agent using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They got me connected to a FAFSA agent in about 15 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. The agent resent the contributor invitation while on the call and walked me through the entire fix. You can see how it works in their demo video: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent explained that the contributor system is having widespread issues with the new FAFSA rollout. After the invitation was resent, my husband accepted it and the SSN field populated automatically - I never had to manually enter it.

•Thank you! I'm desperate at this point so I might try this. The customer service rep on chat seemed clueless and just kept repeating that an email was sent when it clearly wasn't.

•Oh no, I didn't even think about that. I'm already worried about getting aid packages from schools in time to make a decision. This whole new FAFSA system seems like a disaster.

•Yes, once the contributor SSN issue is fixed, you should receive your SAI calculation within 3-5 business days. If it takes longer, that could indicate there are other issues with your application that triggered additional verification.

UPDATE: We figured it out!! It was exactly what @profile5 suggested - my husband hadn't completed his identity verification when he created his FSA ID months ago. Once he finished that process, I received a contributor invitation in MY account (not via email) about 24 hours later. After I sent the invitation to him, he was able to accept it, and his SSN populated automatically in my FAFSA. No need to manually enter it. For anyone else with this problem, check if all contributors have fully completed identity verification in their FSA ID accounts!

•So glad it worked!! The whole system is unnecessarily complicated. Hopefully they'll fix these issues before next year's application cycle.
