FAFSA parent section completed - how does my son access and complete his required portion?

I finished my parent contribution section on the new FAFSA for 2025-2026 last night but now I'm confused about what happens next. I entered all my son's personal information (he's a high school senior) during my section, but how does he complete his required portion? Will he automatically get an email with instructions? Does he need to create his own FSA ID or can he somehow access what I've already started? I haven't received any confirmation emails about next steps. This is our first time doing this and I'm worried we'll miss something important!

Your son absolutely needs his own FSA ID to complete his section. The FAFSA has two separate portions - the parent contribution (which you completed) and the student section. He won't automatically get an email. He needs to: 1. Create his own FSA ID at studentaid.gov 2. Log into the FAFSA application with HIS FSA ID 3. The system should recognize that you've started an application that includes him 4. He'll need to complete his section, including signing electronically Both parts must be completed and signed for the application to be processed and get your SAI calculation.

Thank you! So the system will know I started an application for him even though we have different FSA IDs? I was worried we'd end up with two separate applications somehow.

That shouldn't happen if the student is properly linked in the parent's portion. When you created your portion, did you enter your son's Social Security Number correctly? The system uses that to match the applications. Double-check that you didn't mistype anything when entering his information.

we went thru this last week! make sure when ur son makes his FSA ID he uses EXACTLY the same spelling of his name that you used when you filled out your part. my son's legal name is Christopher but i put Chris and it caused a whole mess with the system not connecting our applications

Oh yikes, I better double-check what I put down. He goes by Alex but his legal name is Alexander. I think I put Alexander but now I'm second-guessing myself!

The most important thing to note is that both you AND your son must complete your sections of the FAFSA for it to be processed. There's no automatic notification system in place currently. Here's the exact process that should work: 1. Your son creates his own FSA ID at studentaid.gov 2. He logs into the FAFSA application using his FSA ID 3. The system should show that there's a partially completed application waiting for him 4. He completes his portion and electronically signs 5. Only after both signatures are in place will the FAFSA be processed for an SAI calculation If your son doesn't see the application when he logs in, check that: - You correctly entered his SSN in your portion - The name spelling matches his legal documents - You accurately entered his date of birth Any discrepancies can prevent the system from connecting the applications.

This is really helpful, thank you! My son will create his FSA ID tonight. Should I log back into my account first to verify all his information is correct before he creates his account?

Try calling Federal Student Aid directly at 1-800-433-3243 to confirm everything is set up correctly. I spent 3 hours on hold last week trying to sort out a similar issue where my daughter couldn't access the application I started. I eventually found Claimyr (claimyr.com) which got me through to an agent in about 15 minutes instead of hours on hold. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. The agent was able to confirm both our applications were linked correctly in their system and my daughter just needed to use the "I am a returning user" option when logging in. Saved us from giving up after all that waiting!

That's a great tip about Claimyr - I might need that if we run into problems! The FAFSA phone lines are impossible to get through on. I'll have my son create his account tonight and see if he can access the application. If not, we'll definitely use this service.

does anyone know if the student section is easier than the parent section?? my daughter is freaking out about doing her part and im trying to tell her its not as bad as she thinks

The student section is typically much simpler than the parent portion, especially for dependent students who don't have complex finances. They'll need to answer questions about their income (if any), create their FSA ID, review the information the parent entered, and sign electronically. The parent portion with all the asset and income questions is definitely the more complicated part!

also make sure your son knows his section has a DEADLINE!! our son waited too long and missed priority deadlines for some schools because he thought "whenever" was fine

THIS!!! Many schools have priority deadlines for maximum aid consideration. Some are as early as January for the following fall. The FAFSA itself may be available until June 2026 for the 2025-2026 academic year, but individual schools set their own priority deadlines for scholarship and grant consideration. Many are February 1st or March 1st, and some competitive schools are even earlier. Missing these deadlines can literally cost thousands in institutional aid, even if you technically complete the FAFSA "on time" according to federal guidelines.

Thank you everyone for your helpful responses! My son created his FSA ID last night and was able to see and access the application I started. He's working on completing his section now. We double-checked all his personal information in my section first to make sure everything matched his legal documents exactly. I really appreciate all the guidance - this process is so confusing the first time through!

That's great news! Make sure you both check the status in a few days after he completes his portion. You should receive an email confirmation once the full application is processed, and then you'll be able to view your SAI (Student Aid Index) calculation. That's the number colleges will use to determine aid packages. If you don't see confirmation within 3-5 days, you may want to log back in to verify everything was properly submitted.

Congratulations on getting through the process successfully! Just wanted to add one more tip for other parents reading this thread - save a PDF copy of your completed FAFSA once both sections are done and submitted. You can do this from either the parent or student login. Having that backup has been a lifesaver when schools ask for verification documents or if you need to reference information later. Also, bookmark your FSA ID accounts because you'll need them again next year for renewal! The whole process gets much easier the second time around.

This is such valuable advice! I wish someone had told me about saving a PDF copy before we started. We're new to this whole process and I didn't even think about needing documentation later. I'll make sure to save everything once my son finishes his section. Thanks for the tip about bookmarking the FSA IDs too - I was already wondering how we'd remember all this login information for next year!
