FAFSA parent portion deadline - do I need to complete it same day as my child?
My son just told me he's completing his part of the FAFSA next weekend and will be sending me an invitation to fill out my section. I'm traveling for work that week and won't have reliable internet access. Will I need to complete my contribution section that same day he sends the invitation, or can I wait until I'm back home with better internet? I don't want to delay his application, but also don't want to rush through my section with spotty hotel wifi. Anyone know if there's a time limit once he invites me?

You definitely don't need to complete it the same day! When your student completes their portion and adds you as a contributor, you'll get an email invitation with a link. That link remains valid for quite a while - there's no 24-hour deadline or anything like that. You can wait until you're back from your trip with reliable internet to complete your portion carefully. The only "deadline" is the overall FAFSA submission deadline, which for the 2025-2026 academic year is June 30, 2026. But obviously, you'll want to complete it much sooner since many schools award aid on a first-come, first-served basis.

•That's a huge relief, thank you! Do you know roughly how long the link stays active? A week? A month? Just want to make sure I don't wait too long after I get back.

I made the mistake of trying to do my part on my phone with bad reception last year and it was a NIGHTMARE!!! The form kept timing out and I had to restart THREE times. Take your time and do it when you have good internet and all your tax docs in front of you. The link doesn't expire quickly.

•Oh gosh, that sounds stressful! I'll definitely wait until I'm home with my documents and reliable wifi then. Thanks for the warning!

Just to add some specific info - the contributor invitation doesn't expire for 90 days. So you definitely have plenty of time to complete your portion after your son sends you the invitation. But as the previous poster mentioned, completing the FAFSA early is always better for maximizing aid opportunities, so I wouldn't delay too long after you return from your trip. Also, make sure you have your FSA ID ready before you start. That's often where parents get stuck because creating a new FSA ID can take 1-3 days to fully process in the system.

•90 days is plenty of time! I'll only be gone for a week. And great reminder about the FSA ID - I created mine last year when my daughter applied, so hopefully it's still valid. I should probably check that before I leave.

When my daughter sent me the contributor invitation last year, I waited about two weeks to complete it due to some tax complications I needed to sort out. The link was still valid, but I started getting automated reminder emails after about 5 days. The system will nudge you, but won't lock you out if you need some time. One thing to keep in mind: if your son is applying to schools with priority deadlines for financial aid, you'll want to make sure the entire FAFSA (including your portion) is submitted before those deadlines. Many schools have priority deadlines in February or March for maximum aid consideration.

•That's good to know about the reminder emails. I'll make completing my portion a priority when I return, especially since he is applying to some schools with early March priority deadlines. Thanks!

•If you ever need to reach Federal Student Aid by phone again, you might want to try using Claimyr. It holds your place in line and calls you back when an agent is available. Saved me hours of wait time when I had issues with my daughter's verification process. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ
