FAFSA not requesting spouse's tax info - will it prompt after spouse signing?
I'm filling out the 2025-2026 FAFSA for the second year in a row, and I've hit a concerning issue. Last year, the form asked for both my and my husband's tax information right away. This year, it's only asking for my tax info and hasn't prompted anything about my husband's information at all. Will it eventually ask for his tax details after he signs the application? I don't want to submit incomplete information and delay my daughter's financial aid. Has the process changed this year? Should I continue or start over?

This is actually a common issue with the new FAFSA system! You're doing everything correctly. The updated FAFSA now works differently - it will only prompt for your spouse's tax information AFTER your spouse logs in with their own FSA ID to sign the application. Once they sign in, the system will automatically pull their tax information through the IRS Data Retrieval Tool if they consent to it. Just continue with your portion, submit it, then have your husband log in with his FSA ID to complete the process.

•Thank you so much for explaining! That's a relief. So I should just continue filling out my part, submit it, then have my husband log in with his FSA ID? Will I get some kind of notification when his part is completed too?

•Oh good, so yours worked out okay in the end? Did you have any issues with the application after that part?

Yes, this is how the updated FAFSA works now. I'd like to add some important information: 1. Make sure both you and your husband have up-to-date FSA IDs 2. The system will use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to automatically import tax information once your spouse signs in 3. Both contributors must complete their portions for the application to be fully submitted 4. You won't receive your Student Aid Index (SAI) until all portions are complete Also, there's a 24-48 hour processing time after all signatures are completed before the application is fully processed.

•Thanks for the detailed explanation! I was worried we were doing something wrong. My husband already has an FSA ID from last year, but I'll make sure it's still working before he tries to sign in.

THE NEW FAFSA IS A NIGHTMARE!!!! i had the same issue but THEN even after my husband signed in it never pulled his tax info properly!!! we had to call FSA for WEEKS trying to get someone to fix it and they kept disconnecting us. our SAI came back way too high because it only counted my income but doubled our assets!!! now my son might lose his financial aid package and we're still fighting with them!!

•That sounds terrible! Did you ever get through to someone at FSA to help fix the issue?

Hey, so if you're having trouble reaching the Federal Student Aid folks (which is common this time of year), I recently found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual human at FSA in about 15 minutes instead of waiting for hours. I was having a similar issue with my husband's info not showing up correctly even after he signed. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ It really saved me a lot of frustration when trying to fix our application.

•I appreciate the suggestion! Hopefully we won't need it, but it's good to know there's a way to reach someone if we have problems after my husband signs.

One more thing I wanted to mention - make sure both you and your husband use separate devices or at least completely log out between signing in. The new FAFSA system sometimes gets confused with cached information if you try to use the same browser session. And save the confirmation page once everything is submitted - you'll want that confirmation number if anything goes wrong.

•That's a great tip! I wouldn't have thought about using separate devices. We'll make sure to do that and I'll definitely save the confirmation page.

This happened to me and my wife too. The weird part was that even after she signed with her FSA ID, there was like a 24-hour delay before her tax sections appeared. So if it doesn't show up immediately after your husband signs, don't panic - just check back the next day. Also the system logged us out like 3 times during the process for no reason so save your progress constantly!

•Thank you for the heads-up about the potential delay! I'll make sure we set aside plenty of time to complete everything and won't panic if there's a wait after he signs.

wait so do both parents always have to sign? my parents are divorced and last year only my mom had to sign since i live with her but now im confused if my dad needs to sign too??

•For divorced parents, only the parent you lived with the most during the past 12 months needs to complete the FAFSA (plus their current spouse if they're remarried). So if you primarily live with your mom, only she (and her spouse if she's remarried) needs to sign.

Update: It worked! My husband signed in with his FSA ID yesterday, and the system did prompt him for his tax information just like you all said. We had to wait about 2 hours after he signed before his sections appeared completely (not a full 24 hours like some mentioned). Our application now shows as complete, and we got our confirmation number. Thanks everyone for your help!

•Great news! Glad it worked out. Make sure to check your email regularly for any communication from FSA in case they need additional verification documents.

That's awesome that it worked out for you! For anyone else reading this thread who might be dealing with similar issues, I'd recommend keeping a few things in mind: 1) Make sure you have all your tax documents ready before starting, 2) Don't try to rush through it - the system can be glitchy if you move too fast between sections, and 3) If you run into technical issues, try clearing your browser cache or switching browsers entirely. The new FAFSA definitely has its quirks but once you get through it, the process is actually pretty streamlined compared to the old paper forms!

•Thanks for the additional tips! I'm new to this whole FAFSA process and honestly found it pretty intimidating at first. It's really helpful to see that even when things seem to go wrong (like the spouse info not showing up initially), there's usually a logical explanation and it works out in the end. I'll definitely keep your advice about not rushing through it in mind when I fill out my application next month!

As someone who just went through this process last month, I can confirm that the new FAFSA system is definitely confusing at first! The key thing to remember is that it's designed to be more secure now - each contributor (you and your spouse) needs to sign in separately with their own FSA ID for their tax information to be pulled. One thing I'd add to the great advice already given here is to make sure both of your FSA IDs are linked to the correct Social Security numbers and that your contact information is up to date. Also, if either of you filed taxes jointly, the system might take a bit longer to sort out whose information is whose, so don't be alarmed if there's a slight delay. The whole process is much smoother once you understand how it works!

•This is such helpful information! I'm just starting to navigate this process for my first child heading to college next year, and honestly the whole thing seemed overwhelming at first. Your point about making sure the FSA IDs are properly linked is really important - I hadn't even thought about that potential issue. It's reassuring to hear that once you understand the system it becomes much more manageable. Thanks for sharing your experience!
