FAFSA expiring in 4 days - Can I submit a new form with missing signatures?
I'm seriously panicking right now. My daughter's FAFSA is supposedly 'expiring' in 4 days according to the studentaid.gov website, and I have NO idea what that means or what happens if it expires! There's apparently missing signatures on her current application, but I can't get ANY help from FAFSA customer service (called like 20 times, always disconnected). Has anyone dealt with this before? Can I just submit a completely new FAFSA application with all the signatures to replace the incomplete one? Will that mess things up more? I don't understand what 'expiring' even means in this context - will she lose her financial aid eligibility completely? Her college orientation is in 3 weeks and we NEED this figured out!

the same thing happened with my sons fafsa last yr. the expiring thing just means u have to complete it b4 that date or start all over. missing signatures is usually easy to fix tho - have u tried logging in and checking the "to do" items on studentaid.gov? should let u add signatures there

•I've tried that! When I go to the 'to do' section, it shows nothing about missing signatures, but when I click on 'status' it says 'Action Required: Missing Signatures' but gives NO way to actually add them. I'm so frustrated I could cry.

This is a common issue with the 2025-2026 FAFSA. When it says "expiring in 4 days," it means the partially completed application will be deleted from the system if not completed by then. For missing signatures, you need to: 1. Log in to studentaid.gov 2. Go to the FAFSA form section 3. Click "Complete Aid Process" 4. Select "FAFSA Form" 5. Choose "Log in to continue" (not "Start New") 6. Navigate to the signature section If you still can't access the signature page, there might be a technical glitch. In that case, yes, you can submit a new FAFSA, but be careful to use the exact same information to avoid discrepancies.

•Thank you for the detailed steps! I tried following them exactly, but after step 5, the system keeps taking me to a summary page that doesn't have any option to add signatures. It's like the website doesn't recognize that signatures are missing even though it's showing that status. So frustrating!

Have you tried using a different browser? Sometimes the FAFSA site has weird compatibility issues. Also, make sure both you and your daughter have FSA IDs set up correctly - that's often the root of signature problems. If the site still won't let you sign, calling FSA directly is unfortunately your best bet. I know it's frustrating, but keep trying different times of day to get through.

•I've tried Chrome, Firefox, and even my phone's browser - same issue on all of them. And yes, we both have FSA IDs that worked fine for logging in. I've been calling constantly but never get through to a human. This is a nightmare!

I had LITERALLY the same problem last month!! The "expiring" thing is just FAFSA's scary way of saying "finish your application" lol. But the missing signature thing is serious - if you submit a whole new application it might create conflicts in their system. Try calling right when they open in the morning, that worked for me after like 5 days of trying 😫

•Thanks for sharing your experience! It's somewhat comforting knowing I'm not alone in this mess. I'll try calling right at opening time tomorrow. Did they actually help you when you got through?

I've been dealing with FAFSA for 3 kids now, and I've learned that calling them is basically impossible unless you know the trick. I started using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me HOURS of hold time when my youngest had signature issues. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. Seriously worth it for FAFSA problems because once you actually talk to someone, they can usually fix signature issues in minutes.

•I've heard about this service too. Several students I work with have used it for FAFSA issues. The signature problem specifically requires a human agent to override something in their system.

•Thank you! I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point. If it gets me to an actual human who can help, it's worth it. I'll check out that link right now.

•Oh no, thank you for the warning! I was seriously considering just starting over with a new application. Definitely won't do that now.

Just to clarify about the "expiring" status - this simply means the system will delete your incomplete application after the time period elapses. Your daughter won't lose eligibility for aid, but you would need to start a new application if that happens. For the signature issue, after connecting with FSA, ask specifically for a "signature override" or "manual signature verification." The agent may need to transfer you to a specialist who can access the signature module directly. Make sure to have both your and your daughter's FSA ID information ready, along with the Save Key for the application.

•Thank you for explaining that! I feel less panicked knowing she won't permanently lose eligibility. I'll specifically ask for a "signature override" when I call - that's really helpful advice.

FAFSA is the WORST!!!1! I had similar problems last year and spent DAYS trying to get it fixed. The whole systems a mess. Try contacting your daughter's college financial aid office too - sometimes they can see what's wrong on their end or give you specific advice. My daughter's college financial aid officer actually had a direct number to FAFSA that worked better than the public one.

•That's a great idea! I hadn't thought of contacting the college directly. I'll call their financial aid office tomorrow morning too. Thanks for the suggestion!

•I actually got through to someone this morning using that Claimyr service someone mentioned above! The agent was able to see that there was a glitch in the signature section of our application. They did a manual override and now it shows as complete! Such a relief. Tell your nephew to definitely call rather than submitting a new application - and maybe use that callback service if he can't get through.
