FAFSA delay for SUNY schools - anyone received notifications yet?

I submitted my FAFSA application almost 7 weeks ago and selected 4 SUNY schools (Binghamton, Buffalo, Stony Brook, and Albany). My SAI calculation came through last week, but I haven't heard a peep from any of the SUNY schools about my financial aid package. The SUNY portal just shows "FAFSA Received - Processing" for all of them. I'm getting really anxious because my friend who applied to private universities already has two aid offers. Has anyone received their financial aid package from any SUNY school yet? Is there a specific timeline I should expect? I'm a first-gen college student so I have no idea if this delay is normal or if I should be worried.

im in the exact same boat, applied to 3 SUNY schools (oneonta, new paltz, and purchase) back in january. got my SAI but radio silence from all schools. driving me CRAZY cuz i need to decide where to go by May 1st!!

Exactly! The May 1st deadline is what has me spiraling. How am I supposed to make an informed decision without knowing what financial aid I'm getting?

This is actually normal for SUNY schools. They typically process financial aid packages later than private universities. The SUNY system has to handle a massive volume of applications across all their campuses, and they tend to send out financial aid packages in mid-to-late March, sometimes even early April. As long as your FAFSA is showing as "received" in the SUNY portal, you're on track. If you're really concerned, you can try calling the financial aid offices directly, though they're likely swamped with calls right now. One thing to note - make sure your FAFSA had your correct School Codes for each SUNY campus. Each individual SUNY school has its own code, and they don't automatically share info between campuses.

Thank you so much for the reassurance! I triple-checked the school codes when I submitted, so that part should be fine. I'll try to be patient for a couple more weeks.

I got my financial aid package from SUNY Oswego yesterday! I submitted my FAFSA in December tho, so maybe thats why?

Lucky you! Was your aid package decent? I'm worried SUNY schools won't give enough grants compared to private schools. I keep hearing private colleges sometimes give more aid despite higher sticker prices.

THIS IS WHY THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! How are students supposed to make life-changing decisions when schools hold financial info hostage until the last minute? My daughter went through this nightmare last year with SUNY schools. They literally sent her package TWO WEEKS before the deposit deadline. The stress alone almost made her choose a different school system entirely. It's RIDICULOUS!

While I understand your frustration, this is unfortunately common across many state university systems. The timing issue stems from the volume of applications and the rigid timelines for state funding allocations. My suggestion is to be proactive rather than waiting passively. Students who reach the financial aid office directly often get faster responses.

I actually managed to talk to someone at SUNY Buffalo's financial aid office yesterday after trying for two weeks to get through on the phone. The advisor told me they're experiencing delays this year because of the new FAFSA rollout and changes to the SAI calculation. She said they're prioritizing processing by intended major and admission status, with some priority majors (nursing, engineering, etc.) being processed first. If you're having trouble getting through on the phone, I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to connect with them - there's a video demo at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ that shows how it works. Basically gets you through the phone queue without waiting on hold forever. Worth it to get actual answers instead of just stressing.

Thank you for the insider info! That makes sense about the new FAFSA system causing delays. I'm applying for Computer Science, so maybe that's considered a priority major? Either way, I appreciate the tip about Claimyr - I'll definitely check that out because I've been calling SUNY Albany every day this week with no luck.

My cousin's son got his package from Stony Brook last week. I think he applied really early tho like in November when the FAFSA first opened. Maybe they're going in order of when people applied?

thats so unfair if true!! the FAFSA was so glitchy when it first opened, lots of us couldnt even apply till january!!

Financial aid counselor here. A few key points about SUNY schools and FAFSA processing this year: 1. The new FAFSA rollout has caused significant delays nationwide, not just at SUNY schools 2. SUNY campuses process aid independently, not as a unified system 3. Each campus prioritizes differently - some by major, some by application date, some by academic merit 4. Most SUNY schools are currently 3-4 weeks behind their normal processing schedule 5. Critically: You DO NOT need to make a deposit until you've received ALL financial aid packages if you explain the situation If you need to make a decision, contact the admissions office (not financial aid) and request a deposit deadline extension, citing pending financial aid information. Most schools will grant extensions until mid-May this year due to the FAFSA delays. Call your top choice school directly and ask for the status of your financial aid package. Be polite but persistent.

This is INCREDIBLY helpful! I had no idea I could ask for a deposit deadline extension. That takes a huge weight off my shoulders. Thank you so much for the expert advice!

Wait, is that really true about deposit extensions? My guidance counselor told me May 1st is absolutely firm and non-negotiable. I'm so confused now.

Yes, it's true that extensions are possible, especially this year with the FAFSA delays. While May 1st is the standard national deposit deadline, schools have discretion to grant extensions. Not all will advertise this option, but many will accommodate requests given valid reasons like pending financial aid. Contact the admissions office directly (not your guidance counselor) to request the extension.

So wait, is it normal to get your SAI score but not hear from schools yet? I got my SAI calculation like 3 weeks ago (really confused by the number tbh, seems way higher than what my family can pay???) but haven't heard from ANY schools. I'm so stressed I can't even sleep. My parents keep asking me where I'm going but I DON'T KNOW because I have no idea what we can afford!!!!

Yes, that's completely normal. Your SAI (Student Aid Index) is calculated directly from your FAFSA data by the federal system. Schools then use that SAI number, along with their own financial aid policies and available funds, to create your specific aid package. The SAI is just one component of how schools determine your aid - each school might offer very different packages even with the same SAI number. The timeframe between receiving your SAI and getting aid offers varies widely by school.
