FAFSA correction automatically submitted without my spouse signature - did it process correctly?
I'm totally confused about what just happened with my daughter's FAFSA correction. My wife started making corrections to our daughter's FAFSA on April 11th, but when she tried to add me as the parent's spouse, my FSA ID wouldn't work properly. We decided to wait and try again later. Then something weird happened - when we checked the account today (April 14th), it shows that the correction was somehow submitted automatically on April 13th even though my wife never hit the submit button! The status tracker shows "FAFSA correction received" and it's in the "FAFSA Correction Processed" stage. The problem is that I never added my signature as the parent's spouse, and nobody hit the submit button. Will this mess up our daughter's financial aid? The SAI calculation needs both parents' info, right? I'm worried the schools will get incomplete information or it'll get flagged for verification because of the missing signature. Has anyone experienced this automatic submission thing before?

this happened to me last yr!! the system does some weird auto-submit thing after like 48 hrs if u leave a correction open. it's super annoying but I think it submits whatever info was entered up to that point

•Thanks for responding! Did your auto-submitted correction get processed correctly? I'm really worried because without my signature as the spouse, I wonder if they'll even consider my income information valid.

From what I can see in your status tracker, your correction has been processed, which is both good and concerning. The good news is that the system accepted the correction. The concerning part is that it processed without your signature as the parent's spouse. According to FAFSA rules, all required signatures must be present for the form to be considered complete. Without your signature, there's a high chance this will trigger a verification request from your daughter's schools or the form might be considered incomplete. I recommend you call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243 to explain the situation and ask for guidance. They can tell you whether your signature is still needed and how to provide it at this stage.

•Thank you for the detailed response. I've been trying to call that number for two days but can't get through to a real person. It's so frustrating! Should I just submit another correction with my signature included? Or would that just complicate things further?

•I wouldn't submit another correction yet without speaking to someone first - it might further complicate things. The phone lines are notoriously busy this time of year. If you're struggling to get through, you might want to try emailing them through the contact form on studentaid.gov, but a phone conversation would be more effective for this situation.

The exact same thing happened with my son's FAFSA!!! The system is SO BUGGY this year with all the FAFSA updates. We had a correction auto-submit and then got selected for verification because of the missing signatures. It was a NIGHTMARE getting it fixed - took us almost 3 weeks of back and forth with the financial aid office at his school.

•Oh no, that's exactly what I'm afraid of! Did you have to submit additional documentation because of the verification? And how did you eventually get it resolved?

•Yeah we had to submit tax transcripts, W-2s, and fill out a special verification form from the school. The worst part was that my son's financial aid package was delayed and almost lost his housing assignment because of it! Make sure you stay on top of it!

This is actually a known issue with the 2024-2025 FAFSA system. When a correction is started but not completed within 48 hours, the system automatically submits whatever information was entered up to that point. Without your signature as the parent's spouse, this is technically an incomplete submission. The system will process it, but there are two likely outcomes: 1. Your daughter's SAI (Student Aid Index) will be calculated based only on the information that was properly signed for, which could result in incorrect aid amounts. 2. The schools will flag this for verification because of the missing signature. You should contact FSA directly to explain the situation and have them guide you on adding your signature retroactively. If your daughter received a confirmation number for the correction, have that ready when you call.

•Thank you for explaining this! I tried calling FSA but I've been on hold forever and keep getting disconnected. Is there another way to fix this?

I've been having the same issues trying to reach FSA about my son's application. After getting disconnected 5 times and wasting hours on hold, I tried using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual FSA agent. They have this service that holds your place in line and calls you back when an agent is available. Worked so much better than waiting on hold! There's a demo video that explains how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ I was able to speak with an agent who helped me fix a similar submission issue. They can actually see when the system auto-submitted your form and can help add missing signatures.

•Thanks for the suggestion! I'll check it out. Did the agent actually help you fix the issue? I'm desperate at this point.

•Yes! The agent was able to see exactly what happened with our application. They guided me through adding the missing signature and made notes on our account about the auto-submission issue. Got everything sorted in one call.

Is it possible that your wife DID hit submit without realizing it? My husband swore he didn't submit our FAFSA but turns out he clicked something that triggered the submission. Just another possibility to consider.

•I suppose it's possible, but she's pretty careful about these things. And the tracker specifically shows that it was submitted on April 13th when neither of us was even logged in. Very strange!

This new 2024-2025 FAFSA system is GARBAGE. I work in a college financial aid office and we're seeing hundreds of these issues. The auto-submit feature is causing massive problems. Here's what you need to know: 1. Yes, the system auto-submits after 48 hours of inactivity 2. Yes, this WILL likely cause problems with your daughter's application 3. Yes, it will probably get flagged for verification 4. NO, submitting another correction right now isn't recommended You NEED to speak with an FSA agent directly. They can add a note to your daughter's application explaining the auto-submission issue and guide you on next steps. Without both parents' signatures (assuming you're both required contributors), the SAI calculation will be incorrect, which affects all aid determinations.

•Thank you so much for this insider perspective. It's reassuring to hear from someone who understands the system, even if the news isn't great. I'll definitely prioritize speaking with an FSA agent directly.

•No problem! One more thing - make sure you check your daughter's SAI once it's calculated. If it seems unusually high or low, that's another sign that your information wasn't properly included. The schools can help with corrections too, but it's faster if you resolve it directly with FSA first.

UPDATE: I finally got through to an FSA agent! They confirmed that the system does auto-submit after 48 hours, but said the good news is that they can see my information was included in the correction, even though my signature wasn't. They're adding a note to our application and sending instructions for me to provide my signature through a special process. The agent said this happens frequently and schools are aware of the issue. Thanks everyone for your help!

•That's great news! Make sure you follow their instructions for adding your signature exactly as directed, and I'd recommend keeping a record of your conversation with the agent (date, time, reference number if provided). This can be helpful if questions come up later during the aid process.

•That's a great suggestion - I did write down the agent's name and the case number they provided. Hopefully this gets resolved soon. My daughter's school has a May 1 deadline for financial aid documents.
