Do we need to update bank balances on FAFSA if returning for signature correction?
My daughter's FAFSA application is flagged for what I think is just a missing signature (got an email about it last week). We originally submitted it about 5 weeks ago, and since then some of our financial information has naturally changed - especially our bank account balances. When we go back in to fix the signature issue, are we required to also update all the financial information that's changed since our initial submission? I'm stressed about potentially triggering an audit if the numbers suddenly change. Has anyone dealt with this situation before? Thanks!

Don't worry about updating the financial information. When you're just going back to add a signature, you're confirming the information was correct as of the date you originally submitted the FAFSA. The system doesn't expect you to update bank balances or other financial details that naturally fluctuate. Just fix the signature issue and you're good to go.

•That's a relief! I was worried we'd have to redo all the financial sections. Thanks for clarifying.

ya actually had same thing happen with my son's application... the signature was missing but we didn't change any of the financial stuff when we fixed it and everything went through fine

•Good to know it worked out for you! Did you have to wait long after fixing the signature for processing?

The FAFSA instructions are actually specific about this. Financial information is considered accurate as of the date of your original submission. The signature is just confirming that the information was true at that time. Changing bank balances now would actually be incorrect from a procedural standpoint, as those weren't your balances when you initially filed. If your family has had a major financial change (job loss, medical expenses, etc.), that's different - you would need to contact your school's financial aid office about a special circumstances review, but that's separate from the FAFSA correction process.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! That makes perfect sense.

When I had to fix my FAFSA last year, I accidentally changed some numbers and it delayed my whole application by like 3 weeks because it triggered some kind of review!! Just do the signature part and NOTHING else!!!!

•OMG same thing happened to my roommate! She updated everything thinking she had to be honest about current balances and ended up getting selected for verification 😫

If you're struggling to get back into the system to make the signature correction, try using Claimyr to reach a FAFSA agent directly. I was stuck in signature correction hell for weeks until I used their service to skip the phone queue. Took me right to an agent who fixed it while I was on the call. Their video explains it better than I can: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ and their website is claimyr.com. Saved me so much stress!

•Does this actually work? I've been calling FSA for DAYS about my daughter's FAFSA verification and can't get through. Just keep getting disconnected.

•Definitely worked for me! I was skeptical too but I was desperate after three disconnected calls. Agent fixed everything while I was on the phone with them.

I was super confused about this too but my financial aid advisor said ONLY fix what they specifically ask for, nothing else. The FAFSA is basically a snapshot of your finances at the time you submitted, not current day.

I think different schools handle this differently. My son's college financial aid office told us to update everything when we were fixing a similar issue. Called the Federal Student Aid office though and they said ONLY fix the signature. Super confusing! I'd go with what the Federal Student Aid folks say since they're the ones who actually process the FAFSA.

•The school might be confused or misinformed. FSA guidelines are clear that corrections are only for errors in what was reported at the time of filing, not for updating information that has naturally changed since then. Schools do have their own verification processes, but that's separate from FAFSA corrections.

is your kid an independent or dependent student? i think the rules might be different

•She's a dependent - still in high school, applying for her freshman year of college.

•The rules for corrections are the same for dependent and independent students. The distinction only affects which financial information needs to be reported in the first place.

In the 2025-2026 FAFSA, they've actually improved this process. The new system more clearly separates signature fixes from substantive corrections. When you go in to add the missing signature, you'll see it doesn't even let you access the financial sections unless you specifically choose to make other corrections. Just follow the prompts for signature only.
