Daughter deleted schools on processed FAFSA, now back in review - will aid offers be delayed?

My daughter's FAFSA was fully processed last week (we got the SAI score and everything), but then her roommate told her she should remove schools she's not attending anymore to "clean up" her application. Now her status says "under review" again! Does this mean she's basically starting over? Will all her financial aid offers be delayed until this second review is complete? Her first tuition payment is due in 6 weeks and I'm seriously worried this mistake might push back all her award packages. Has anyone dealt with this before?

This happens quite often! When you delete schools from an already processed FAFSA, the system does put it back into review, but it's usually a much faster process than the initial review. It's more like a verification that nothing substantial changed. In my son's case last year, it took about 4-5 days to go from "under review" back to "processed" after he removed some schools.

4-5 days would be manageable. I'm just worried because we're getting so close to payment deadlines. Does this affect schools that already received her FAFSA before she deleted the others?

Ugh I wish we'd known that. This is our first time through the process and there's so much conflicting advice out there.

To clarify what's actually happening here: Schools that already received her processed FAFSA information before the deletion will still have that data. The colleges don't lose access to her SAI score or information just because she removed them from her current list. However, if she was planning to add NEW schools, those will be delayed until after the new review is complete. The re-review process typically takes 3-7 days in my experience working with students, as long as no other information was changed besides just removing schools.

This is so helpful, thank you! She wasn't adding any new schools, just removing ones she's no longer considering. So it sounds like the schools she's actually interested in should still have all her information.

Exactly! Those schools still have her information. The "under review" status is more about updating the Department of Education's systems than affecting schools that already received her data. If you're still concerned, I recommend having your daughter log into her studentaid.gov account and check the "FAFSA Processing Results" section to confirm which schools have already received her information.

When this happened to me last spring the review went on for THREE WEEKS because they decided to verify my income or something during the second review!! It was a nightmare and totally messed up my aid timeline. I hope your daughter doesn't have the same bad luck I did but just warning you that sometimes it isn't just a quick check. 😩

Oh no, that's exactly what I'm afraid of! Did you have to submit additional documents during that time? Or did it just take a long time with no explanation?

They sent me an email requesting W-2 verification and I had to upload the documents through the portal. Then radio silence for like 2.5 weeks before it suddenly said processed again. Super stressful and I missed priority deadlines for two schools because of it.

I think it depends if anything else changed when she deleted the schools. My daughter did the same thing and it went back to processed in like 2 days, no big deal at all.

If you're worried about timeline, you should call the Federal Student Aid Information Center directly to ask about your specific case. Unfortunately, their wait times are ridiculous - I was on hold for over 2 hours last month trying to fix a similar issue. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that held my place in line and called me back when an agent was available. Their video shows how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. The agent was able to tell me exactly what was happening with my application review and gave me a timeframe for resolution.

Thanks for the suggestion! I tried calling yesterday and gave up after 45 minutes on hold. Might try that service if we don't see movement in the next few days.

this whole system is DESIGNED to trip students up!!!! theres no reason removing schools should trigger a whole new review period but thats how the govt makes sure fewer students get their aid on time 🙄 its all about making the process as complicated as possible

While I understand your frustration, the re-review is actually a security feature. It's checking that someone isn't maliciously removing schools from a student's application without their knowledge. The system is far from perfect, but this particular check does serve a legitimate purpose.

just wondering did she change anything else like income or family size when she removed the schools?

Not as far as I know - she says she only removed schools from the list. But now I'm going to double-check with her to make sure!

One more important point: even if there's a delay in reprocessing, your daughter should proactively contact the financial aid offices at her chosen schools if payment deadlines are approaching. Many schools have procedures for students whose FAFSA processing is delayed, including payment extensions or provisional financial aid packages. They deal with these situations regularly and would much rather work with you than have a student unable to register due to processing delays.

This is such good advice. I'll have her call the financial aid office at her top choice tomorrow. At least that would give us some peace of mind if they can offer temporary arrangements.

Update: My daughter's FAFSA was reprocessed overnight and is now showing as complete again! Looks like it was a quick review after all. Thanks for all the helpful advice!

That's great news! Glad it was resolved quickly.
