Corrected FAFSA processed but not received by college - is this normal?

I submitted corrections to my daughter's FAFSA on April 11, and it was processed the very next day according to the studentaid.gov site. However, it's now been over two weeks and her university (State Technical University) still claims they haven't received the updated information. When I called the financial aid office, they just told me to "be patient" and that "FAFSA transmissions can take time." But two weeks seems excessive! Her housing deposit is due May 15th, and we can't finalize any decisions without knowing the aid package. Has anyone else experienced delays with colleges receiving corrected FAFSAs this year? Should I be worried or is this normal with the new FAFSA rollout?

Thanks for letting me know we're not alone in this. Have you tried calling your school's financial aid office? Did they give you any timeline for when they expect to receive it?

This is unfortunately very common with this year's FAFSA rollout. The processing might be complete on the Federal Student Aid side, but there are still delays in transmitting to colleges. A few things you should do: 1. Make sure your daughter listed that specific college on her FAFSA (you'd be surprised how often students forget this step) 2. Print a copy of the processed FAFSA confirmation page showing the date 3. Contact the school's financial aid office again and ask specifically about their FAFSA receipt schedule - some schools only download FAFSA data on certain days of the week 4. Request to speak with a senior financial aid counselor who might have more insight into their processing timeline Regarding the May 15th deadline - most schools will allow a housing deposit extension if you explain the situation is due to FAFSA delays outside your control. Get this request in writing ASAP.

Thank you for these specific action items! I didn't know schools only download FAFSA data on certain days - that could explain it. I'll definitely request a housing deposit extension in writing tomorrow. Is there any specific language I should use to make sure they take it seriously?

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN THIS YEAR!!! My son's corrected FAFSA has been "processing" for THREE WEEKS and his first choice college keeps sending threatening emails about missing the May 1 deadline for confirming enrollment! How can we confirm when we don't even know what aid he's getting?? Someone needs to be FIRED over this disaster of a rollout!

I feel this on a spiritual level. Our financial aid counselor actually laughed when I asked when we'd get our package. She said "welcome to FAFSA 2023-24, where everything's made up and the deadlines don't matter" 😬

I work in college admissions (not financial aid specifically, but adjacent) and can confirm there are significant delays in FAFSA transmission this year. Even when the FSA system shows "processed," there can be a 2-3 week lag before schools receive the data. Here's what's happening behind the scenes: 1. Your correction was processed by Federal Student Aid on April 12 2. FSA then packages that data for transmission to the colleges listed on the FAFSA 3. Each institution has scheduled "download days" when they pull from the federal database 4. Once received, schools have their own processing time (typically 3-5 business days) to integrate it into their systems With the delayed FAFSA rollout this year, many schools are being more flexible with deadlines. I'd recommend calling the financial aid office again, but this time specifically ask for a "timeline exception request" due to FAFSA processing delays. Document everything and follow up with emails to create a paper trail.

Thank you for this detailed explanation! It helps to understand what's happening behind the scenes. I'll definitely ask for a "timeline exception request" - that sounds like the exact terminology I need.

Timeline exception request?? I've called my son's school FOUR TIMES and nobody mentioned this option! They just keep saying "we'll process it when we get it" which is USELESS information!

Try calling the Federal Student Aid helpline directly. They can confirm if your corrected FAFSA was actually transmitted to your daughter's school. Sometimes there's a glitch where it shows processed on your end but the transmission failed.

That's a good suggestion. Do you know the best number to call? I tried the main FSA number last week and was on hold for over an hour before giving up.

I had the same issue trying to reach FSA about a verification problem. After wasting hours on hold, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that holds your place in line and calls you back when an agent is available. Saved me literally hours of hold time! They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. Worth it when you need to actually talk to someone at FSA about time-sensitive issues like transmission problems.

March to now? That's almost two months! I really hope ours doesn't take that long. Did they extend her decision deadline because of the delay?

Quick update for everyone in this thread - FSA just released a statement yesterday acknowledging ongoing transmission delays to institutions. They're implementing a system update this weekend that should clear the backlog. If your school still hasn't received your FAFSA by next Wednesday, they recommend submitting a case through the FSA Feedback Center online rather than calling, as the call centers are overwhelmed.

Thank you for sharing this update! That's really helpful information. I'll wait until next Wednesday before submitting a case. Appreciate everyone's help and suggestions!
