Why has unemployment decreased - worried about my Washington ESD benefits ending
I've been hearing that unemployment rates are going down everywhere and I'm getting really anxious about what this means for my claim. I've been on regular UI benefits since losing my job at a manufacturing plant in November and I still have 8 weeks left on my claim. Does anyone know if Washington ESD cuts people off early when unemployment decreases? I'm worried they'll start being stricter about job search requirements or find reasons to disqualify people. My weekly claims have been going through fine but now I'm second-guessing everything.

The unemployment rate dropping doesn't affect your individual claim eligibility. If you qualified initially and continue meeting the weekly requirements, Washington ESD can't just cut you off because the overall economy is improving. Your benefit year runs its full course regardless of statewide statistics.

•That's reassuring, thank you. I guess I've been reading too much news and getting paranoid.

•yeah this is correct, your claim runs independent of the overall rates

Actually you should be more concerned about your job search requirements. When unemployment decreases, Washington ESD does sometimes audit job search logs more frequently. Make sure you're documenting everything properly - 3 job contacts per week minimum and keep detailed records in WorkSourceWA.

•Wait, I thought it was just 2 job contacts per week? I've been doing 2 this whole time...

•It's been 3 since they updated the requirements last year. You need to get on that immediately or you could face disqualification.

•I had this same confusion and got called for an adjudication interview because of insufficient job search. Took forever to get through to someone at Washington ESD to explain.

I was struggling with the same worries about my claim getting cut short. Couldn't get through to Washington ESD no matter how many times I called - always busy signals or getting hung up on after waiting for hours. Found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to an agent in under 20 minutes. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. The agent confirmed my benefits won't be affected by the unemployment rate changes.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already struggling financially and can't afford expensive services.

•It's really affordable compared to the stress of not knowing. Plus getting actual answers from Washington ESD directly is worth it when you're worried about your benefits.

•Sounds like a scam to me. Why would you pay someone to make a phone call you can make yourself?

THE SYSTEM IS RIGGED!!! They want people off benefits as soon as possible and will use ANY excuse. When unemployment goes down they absolutely start finding reasons to deny claims. I've seen it happen to friends. Watch out for surprise adjudications and random audits of your job search activities!!!

•While Washington ESD can be frustrating, spreading conspiracy theories doesn't help anyone. The rules are clearly posted on their website.

•It's not conspiracy when it's happening to real people! My neighbor got disqualified for a 'job search violation' right after the unemployment rate dropped in his area.

just keep filing your weekly claims and don't overthink it. been on unemployment 3 times over the years and never had issues as long as you follow the basic rules

•That's what I'm trying to do but all this news about the economy makes me nervous.

•Same here, it's hard not to worry when you depend on these benefits to survive.

I think what happens is Washington ESD gets pressure from politicians when unemployment rates drop because it looks bad if lots of people are still collecting benefits. They might not cut people off directly but they definitely scrutinize claims more carefully. Make sure your work search log is perfect and you're reporting any income correctly.

•This is actually a good point. Political pressure does influence enforcement priorities even if it doesn't change the actual eligibility rules.

•Great, so I need to be even more careful now. This is so stressful.

I'm in the same boat as you OP, still have about 6 weeks left on my claim and getting worried about everything. Been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks to ask about this but can never get through. The phone system is impossible.

•Try that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier. Seriously saved me hours of frustration trying to reach Washington ESD.

•Might have to look into that, this is ridiculous how hard it is to talk to someone.

From what I understand unemployment rates are calculated differently than individual claims. The rate going down just means fewer new people are filing, not that existing claims get terminated early. Your benefit year is your benefit year regardless of what's happening with the broader economy.

•That makes sense logically but I've been burned by government agencies before changing rules without warning.

•Washington ESD has to give notice for any major rule changes. They can't just surprise people.

honestly I wouldn't worry about it too much. if you're following all the rules and filing correctly you should be fine. the media makes everything sound scarier than it actually is

•You're probably right, I just get anxious about anything that might affect my benefits.

I work in HR and deal with unemployment claims regularly. The unemployment rate dropping actually means there are more jobs available, which could be good for you in finding new work. Washington ESD wants people to find jobs and get off benefits - that's always been the goal. The rate itself doesn't trigger any automatic changes to existing claims.

•That's a good perspective, thank you. I guess I should be focusing more on job searching than worrying about losing benefits.

•Exactly, use this time to your advantage while the job market is improving.

Been dealing with Washington ESD for months and the only thing that's consistent is how inconsistent they are. One week everything's fine, next week there's some random issue with your claim. I wouldn't put it past them to start being more strict when unemployment drops.

•That's more about individual claim issues than policy changes based on unemployment rates though.

•Maybe, but the timing always seems suspicious to me.

Here's what I found out when I called Washington ESD last week using Claimyr - the agent told me they're actually seeing fewer new claims filed which means less workload for adjudication. This might actually mean faster processing times for any issues that come up with existing claims.

•Oh that's interesting, so maybe it's actually a good thing for people like us still on claims.

•How was your experience with Claimyr? I'm getting desperate to talk to someone at Washington ESD.

•Really smooth actually. Much better than spending entire days calling and getting nowhere.

The unemployment rate dropping is generally good news for the economy but I understand the anxiety when you're still depending on benefits. Just stay compliant with all requirements and you should be fine through the end of your benefit year.

same worries here! been on benefits since December and have been fine but now seeing all this news about unemployment rates and getting paranoid. glad I'm not the only one feeling this way

•Yes! It's such a relief to know other people are thinking about this too. Makes me feel less crazy for worrying.

I think you're overthinking this. Washington ESD processes claims based on individual eligibility, not on what the overall unemployment rate is doing. Focus on finding a new job rather than worrying about losing benefits - that's the best protection.

•You're absolutely right. I should channel this energy into job searching instead of worrying.
