What happens if I don't file my Washington ESD unemployment on my taxes?

I received unemployment benefits from Washington ESD last year (about $8,200 total) and I'm doing my taxes now. I know I'm supposed to report it but honestly I'm wondering what would happen if I just... didn't? Like would the IRS actually know? I got the 1099-G form from Washington ESD but I'm really tight on money and owing more taxes is going to hurt. Has anyone not reported their UI benefits before? What are the actual consequences?

Don't even think about it! The IRS absolutely knows about your unemployment benefits. Washington ESD reports all 1099-G forms directly to the IRS. They'll catch it and you'll end up owing penalties and interest on top of the taxes you already owed.

Ugh I figured as much. So there's no way around reporting it then?

0 coins

Nope, it's all automated. The IRS computer systems match up the 1099-G forms they receive with what you report on your tax return.

My neighbor tried this a few years ago and got audited. Ended up paying way more in the end with all the penalties.

0 coins

How much more did they end up paying?

0 coins

I think it was like double what they originally owed plus a bunch of fees

0 coins

Wait I'm confused about this too. I thought unemployment wasn't taxable? I've been getting UI from Washington ESD since November and nobody told me it was taxable income.

0 coins

Unemployment benefits are definitely taxable income at the federal level. Washington state doesn't tax it but the feds do. You should have been having taxes withheld from your weekly payments.

0 coins

Oh no... I didn't elect to have taxes taken out. Am I going to owe a ton of money?

0 coins

You'll owe income tax on whatever you received. The rate depends on your total income for the year. If you're in a low tax bracket it might not be too bad, but you should definitely file correctly.

I had a similar situation last year where I was stressed about owing taxes on my unemployment. What really helped was using Claimyr to get through to someone at Washington ESD who could explain exactly what my 1099-G should look like and answer questions about the tax implications. Way easier than trying to call them myself - you can check it out at claimyr.com if you need to talk to someone. There's even a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

0 coins

That's interesting, did they actually help with tax questions or just unemployment stuff?

0 coins

They helped clarify what was on my 1099-G form and explained when benefits were paid out vs when they were taxable. Really useful for getting the forms straight before doing taxes.

0 coins

The IRS WILL catch this. They have all the 1099-G data and their computers automatically flag returns that don't match. You'll get a letter demanding payment plus penalties that can be 20% or more of what you owed.

0 coins

This is exactly right. The matching is automated and they WILL find it.

0 coins

Okay okay I get it, I need to report it. I was just hoping there was some loophole.

0 coins

Look I get being tight on money but not reporting unemployment is a really bad idea. The penalties make it so much worst. Can you set up a payment plan with the IRS if you can't pay all at once?

0 coins

Yeah I think they do payment plans. I should probably look into that instead of trying to avoid the taxes altogether.

0 coins

Yes, the IRS offers payment plans for people who can't pay their full tax bill. Much better option than not filing correctly.

0 coins

dude just report it, its not worth the stress of wondering if theyll catch you (they will

0 coins

You're right, the stress probably isn't worth it.

0 coins

Another thing to consider - if you don't report it correctly and they catch it later, it can also affect future unemployment claims. Washington ESD could potentially flag your account for issues.

0 coins

Wait really? How would that affect my unemployment account?

0 coins

I'm not 100% sure on the specifics but I know there can be compliance issues that come up if there are tax problems related to benefits you received.

0 coins

I made this mistake years ago thinking nobody would notice $3000 in unemployment. Got a letter from IRS about 18 months later demanding payment plus like $600 in penalties and interest. Definitely not worth it.

0 coins

Yikes, 18 months later? I thought they'd catch it faster than that.

0 coins

Sometimes it takes them a while to process everything but they eventually get to it. The delay just makes the penalties bigger.

0 coins

Can I ask a related question? I got unemployment from Washington ESD in 2024 but also worked part time. Do I report both the unemployment AND the wages?

0 coins

Yes, you report all income. Your unemployment benefits from the 1099-G and your wages from your W-2 forms.

0 coins

Thanks, that's what I thought but wanted to make sure.

0 coins

The bottom line is unemployment benefits are income just like wages. The government wants their cut and they have all the paperwork to prove you received it.

0 coins

Yeah I'm getting that message loud and clear from everyone here.

If money is really tight you might qualify for free tax preparation through VITA programs. They help with situations like this all the time.

0 coins

What's VITA?

0 coins

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance - free tax help for people with lower incomes. You can find locations on the IRS website.

I used Claimyr again this year to double-check some details on my 1099-G before filing. Super helpful to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD instead of guessing about what the form means.

0 coins

How quickly were you able to get through to someone?

0 coins

Way faster than trying to call the regular number. I think I got connected within like 20 minutes instead of hours of busy signals.

0 coins

Don't risk it OP. Report the unemployment income. The IRS catches pretty much everything eventually and the penalties make it way more expensive.

0 coins

Alright everyone has convinced me. I'll report it properly and figure out the payment situation later.

0 coins

Smart choice. Better to deal with the tax bill now than deal with IRS collections later. Those people are not fun to deal with.

0 coins

For real, IRS collections is a nightmare. Just pay what you owe upfront.

0 coins

Good luck with your taxes OP. At least now you know for next year to have them withhold taxes from your unemployment if you need benefits again.

0 coins

Yeah definitely learned that lesson. Thanks everyone for the reality check.

0 coins

One more vote for just reporting it correctly. I know it sucks to owe money but it's way better than the alternative.

0 coins

Agreed. Going to do my taxes properly this weekend.

0 coins

That's the right call. You'll sleep better knowing everything is filed correctly.

0 coins

If anyone else reading this is confused about their Washington ESD 1099-G form, I'd definitely recommend checking out that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Really helped me understand what everything meant before I filed.

0 coins

Is it expensive to use?

0 coins

I honestly don't remember the exact cost but it was worth it to get clear answers about my tax forms. Way cheaper than dealing with IRS penalties later.

0 coins

Update us after you file OP! Hope it goes smoothly for you.

0 coins

Will do. Thanks again everyone for talking sense into me.
