Need immediate ESD worker retraining program with no waitlist - options?

I just got laid off from my warehouse job after 7 years (company moving operations to Nevada) and I need to get into a retraining program ASAP. My ESD claim was approved last week but when I checked out the Worker Retraining Program at my local community college, they told me there's a 6-8 week assessment process before I can start classes. I can't afford to wait that long with bills piling up. Does anyone know of any ESD-approved retraining programs that let you sign up and start immediately? I'm looking at IT or healthcare certificates that I could finish in under 6 months. I don't want to mess up my unemployment benefits by signing up for the wrong program. Any advice?

Commissioner-approved training (CAT) programs through ESD don't typically have immediate enrollment options. The assessment process is designed to determine if the training is suitable for your situation and job market. Even the fastest programs I've seen still take 3-4 weeks minimum for approval. Your best option is to continue with your regular unemployment benefits while the retraining approval process happens. You won't lose benefits during this application period as long as you keep doing your required job searches. Once approved for training, the job search requirements are usually waived. You might want to check with WorkSource - they sometimes have accelerated approval processes for in-demand fields like healthcare and IT.

Thanks for the info. So even while I'm waiting for approval I still need to do the 3 job searches weekly? I was hoping I could skip that if I'm clearly headed for retraining. I'll check with WorkSource tomorrow morning.

the community colleges actually have some programs staring every few weeks not just at the begining of quarters. try checking south seattle college they had a quick start IT program my brother did last year and he started like 2 weeks after applying

That's a good point about mid-quarter start dates, but it's important to note that even with those programs, you still need ESD approval for the training to qualify as CAT (Commissioner-Approved Training) if you want to keep receiving benefits while studying full-time. Without that approval, you'll still need to be available for work and conducting job searches.

JUST went through this exact situation last month!!! The whole process is RIDICULOUS and nobody gives you straight answers!!! I called ESD literally 47 times trying to get someone to explain the training benefits and kept getting disconnected or told different things each time. One agent told me I'd lose ALL my benefits if I started school before approval, another said it was fine as long as I kept job searching. SO FRUSTRATING!!! I finally found out that you CAN start classes before getting CAT approval BUT you have to keep doing your job searches until you get the official approval letter. Once approved, you can stop the job searches and just focus on school. But getting ahold of someone at ESD who knows what they're talking about is nearly IMPOSSIBLE.

Wow, this is exactly what I was worried about. Did you ever get through to someone who could give you definite answers? I'm nervous about starting classes without official approval.

I FINALLY got through after using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). They get you through to an actual ESD agent without the hours of waiting and hangups. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 The ESD agent I talked to confirmed I could start classes but needed to keep doing job searches until I got the Training Benefits approval letter. After that, I was exempt from job searches. Worth every penny to finally get a straight answer instead of guessing!

I just completed the CAT program for a medical coding certificate. Here's what you need to know: 1. There are NO immediate start programs that are pre-approved by ESD - all require some processing time. 2. You can enroll in classes while waiting for approval, but you must continue your job searches until you receive official Training Benefits approval. 3. The specific training program must be for an "in-demand" occupation in your labor market. ESD uses labor market data to determine this, so healthcare and IT are generally approved. 4. The fastest approval I've seen is about 3 weeks, and that's if you have all your paperwork ready and your WorkSource counselor is efficient. 5. Make sure you specifically apply for Training Benefits through ESD, not just enroll in school. They're two separate processes. I'd recommend getting started with both processes immediately - enrollment and ESD approval. That way, you minimize the total waiting time.

This is really helpful, thank you. How long did your approval process take from start to finish? And did you find it was worth it in the end?

My approval took about 5 weeks total, but that included a delay because I didn't have my training plan properly filled out the first time. And yes, absolutely worth it! I completed my medical coding certificate in 5 months and had a job offer before I even finished. The best part was being able to focus 100% on my studies without having to do job searches for jobs I didn't even want.

THIS! ESD has gotten really strict about this lately. My neighbor tried to take just ONE online class without reporting it and got disqualified for benefits. They check enrollment records against benefit claims.

Has anyone tried the IT boot camps? I've been looking at Code Fellows and some others but they're expensive and not sure if ESD would approve them as training programs? My understancing is that training has to be at accredited schools

You're right about the accreditation requirements. Most coding bootcamps aren't approved for ESD training benefits because they lack proper accreditation. Community college programs are almost always approved if they're for in-demand occupations, while private training programs have a much higher bar to clear.

One more thing - make sure you file for Training Benefits as soon as possible. There's a deadline based on when your unemployment claim started (usually within the first 52 weeks). If you miss this window, you might not be eligible even if the training program is approved. Also, if you're considering healthcare, check out the WA Health Workforce Gateway program. They sometimes have accelerated approval processes for healthcare training through partnerships with ESD. I believe they're specifically working to reduce wait times for certain high-demand certifications.

Thanks again! I'll look into the Health Workforce Gateway right away. I definitely don't want to miss any deadlines on this.
