Can I collect ESD unemployment benefits while attending college classes? Need advice ASAP
I just got laid off from my warehouse job last week and I'm seriously thinking about finally going back to school. I've been wanting to get my degree in IT for years but never had the chance. Now might be the perfect time? But I'm worried about my unemployment benefits - will ESD cut me off if I enroll in college classes? Has anyone successfully claimed benefits while in school? The ESD website is super confusing about this. I need to make a decision by next week since winter quarter registration is coming up soon!

•Oh no, that's exactly what I'm afraid of! Did you end up winning your appeal? I really can't afford to lose benefits but also don't want to put off school again.

You need to apply for the Training Benefits (TB) program through ESD. If approved, you can attend school full-time while receiving unemployment. However, there are specific criteria you must meet: 1. Your occupation must be "in decline" according to ESD's determination 2. You must be training for a "high-demand" occupation 3. You must apply for Training Benefits within the first 52 weeks of your claim 4. The educational program must be on their approved list If you don't qualify for TB, you can still attend part-time as long as you remain able and available for full-time work and continue your job search activities (3 per week). You'll need to be willing to adjust your class schedule or quit school if you receive a job offer.

•Thank you! This is super helpful. Warehouse work has been declining with all the automation, so maybe I'd qualify for TB. Do you know where I can find the list of high-demand occupations? And how long does the TB application process usually take?

I went through this exact process in 2025! Got laid off from my customer service job and applied for Training Benefits to get my nursing certificate. The key is documenting EVERYTHING and being very specific about why your current career has limited prospects. When you log into your eServices account, look for the "Training Benefits" section - that's where you submit the application. I'd also recommend reaching out to the school's financial aid office, as they often have experience helping students navigate the ESD process.

•This gives me hope! I'll definitely check out the TB section in eServices. Did you have any issues with your weekly claims during the application process? I'm nervous about messing something up and losing my benefits.

Just wanted to add that if you choose the Commissioner Approved Training (CAT) route instead of Training Benefits, you don't have to do the job search activities while in school. That's what I did because my industry wasn't technically "in decline" enough for TB. The downside is you only get your regular claim weeks, no extension.

•This is NOT entirely accurate. CAT still requires your occupation to be in decline, it's just a different approval process. And you still need to be able and available for work unless specifically waived. Please don't spread misinformation that could get people in trouble with their claims.

I've been trying to get through to ESD for WEEKS to ask about this exact situation, and it's impossible!!! Every time I call, it's either "high call volume" or I get disconnected after waiting for an hour. So frustrating when you need actual answers about something important like education benefits!

•I had the same problem until I found Claimyr. It basically holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of frustration when I needed to sort out my training application. You can check them out at claimyr.com - they have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Totally worth it since getting direct answers from an actual ESD agent makes all the difference with complex stuff like school approvals.

DO NOT listen to anyone telling you that you can just go to school without telling ESD!!! My sister did that and now she owes $7,800 in overpayments because they found out she wasn't actually available for work while attending classes. ALWAYS disclose everything!!!

•Thanks for the warning! I definitely don't want to end up with an overpayment situation. I'm planning to be completely transparent with ESD about my school plans.

I work with a workforce development program that helps people navigate training while on unemployment. Here are some additional facts that might help: 1. You must apply for Training Benefits within the first 52 weeks of your claim 2. If approved for TB, you can get up to 26 additional weeks of benefits beyond your regular UI claim 3. Part-time training doesn't require special approval as long as you maintain your job search requirements 4. For IT specifically, many programs qualify as "high-demand" in Washington state I'd recommend contacting your local WorkSource office too - they have specialists who can help you determine if your training plan will be approved before you invest time applying.

•This is all excellent information. I didn't realize I could get additional weeks beyond my regular claim if approved for TB - that would be amazing for completing a longer program. I'll definitely visit WorkSource this week to discuss my options. Thank you!

•Yes! I applied for Training Benefits and got approved for my IT program. The process took about 3 weeks. I had to submit the TB application through eServices, then provide documentation from my school showing it was an approved program. I also needed to explain why my warehouse experience wasn't leading to stable employment. They ended up approving me since IT is considered high-demand. Now I can focus on school without doing job searches. Best decision I've made!

•@Statiia Aarssizan That s'awesome that it worked out for you @Ezra Beard! I m'definitely going to look into the TB program now. Did you have any issues during those 3 weeks while your application was pending? Like did you still have to do job searches or were you able to start classes right away?
