How much you get from unemployment benefits in Washington state?
hey everyone, just wondering how much money people actually get from unemployment here in washington? i know it depends on your previous wages but what's the range? i'm thinking about filing but want to know if it's even worth it or if the amount is super low. also how long does it take to get approved and start receiving payments? thanks!

The weekly benefit amount in Washington varies based on your earnings history. The minimum is around $295 per week and maximum is about $999 per week as of 2025. They calculate it using your highest earning quarter from the past 15 months. You can use the benefit calculator on the Washington ESD website to get an estimate before filing.

•thanks! that's actually higher than i expected. do you know how they calculate the exact amount?

•It's roughly 3.85% of your total wages in your highest quarter, but there are caps and minimum thresholds. The exact formula is on the ESD site.

I'm getting $847 per week right now. I was making about $75k annually before I got laid off. The process took about 3 weeks from filing to getting my first payment, but that was pretty smooth compared to what some people experience.

•wow that's pretty decent! did you have any issues with the application process?

•No major issues, just had to wait for them to verify my employment history. Make sure you have your previous employer info ready when you file.

Been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my claim being stuck in adjudication. Can't get anyone on the phone - it's impossible! The automated system just hangs up on you after being on hold forever.

•I had the same problem until I found Claimyr (claimyr.com). They actually got me through to a real person at ESD within a few days. There's a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Saved me hours of frustration trying to call myself.

•Really? That sounds too good to be true. How does it work exactly?

•They basically handle the calling process for you and get you connected to an actual ESD agent. Way better than sitting on hold for hours just to get disconnected.

The amount really depends on your work history. I only worked part-time jobs so I'm only getting like $340 a week. It's not much but it helps with basic expenses while I'm job searching.

•that's still something though. better than nothing while looking for work

Yara Khalil
•Yeah exactly. Plus you have to do the job search requirements anyway so it forces you to stay active in looking.

DON'T EXPECT MUCH!!! I've been waiting 2 months for my claim to be approved. The system is completely broken. They ask for more documentation every week and then ignore what you send them.

•Two months does seem excessive. Have you tried contacting them directly about the delay?

•TRY CALLING THEM! Good luck getting through. I've called hundreds of times.

•This is exactly why services like Claimyr exist. Sometimes you need help getting through their phone system.

Also worth noting that Washington has some of the better unemployment benefits compared to other states. The maximum weekly amount is pretty high and they have extended benefit periods during high unemployment.

•good to know! i wasn't sure how washington compared to other places

•Yeah we're pretty fortunate here. Some states cap benefits way lower.

just got approved last week after filing in early december. getting $623/week which is about 60% of what i was making. not bad considering i was worried about making rent

Ava Williams
•that's awesome! how long did the whole process take from start to finish?

•about 3 weeks total. had to do a phone interview but it went pretty smooth

Remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income, so you'll owe taxes on whatever you receive. You can choose to have taxes withheld or pay them later. Also, there are work search requirements - you need to apply for jobs and keep a log.

Ava Williams
•oh i didn't think about the tax part. good point
0 coins
Miguel Castro
•Yeah, a lot of people forget about that and get surprised come tax time. Better to have them withhold 10% if you can afford the smaller weekly amount.

my sister got like $780 a week when she got laid off from her tech job. seemed like a lot but she was making good money before. really depends on your previous salary

Ava Williams
•yeah that makes sense. higher salary = higher benefits

Update: Finally got through to someone at ESD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. Turns out my employer had disputed my claim and that's why it was stuck. The agent was able to explain the whole situation and tell me what documents I needed to submit. Wish I had known about this sooner instead of wasting weeks trying to call myself.

•Glad it worked out! Yeah employer disputes can really hold things up if you don't know what's happening.

•good to hear you got it sorted out. that claimyr thing sounds pretty useful

One thing to keep in mind is that you can work part-time while on unemployment and still get partial benefits. They have a formula for how much you can earn before it affects your weekly amount.

Ava Williams
•oh really? i didn't know you could work part-time too
0 coins
Yara Khalil
•Yeah as long as you report the earnings honestly. I think you can make up to about 1.5 times your weekly benefit amount before it starts reducing your UI payment.

been on unemployment for 8 months now (got extended benefits). started at $445/week which covers most of my basic expenses. not fun but keeps me afloat while job hunting

Ava Williams
•8 months? how long can you collect for?

Oliver Weber
•normally 26 weeks but they have extended benefits when unemployment rates are high. can go up to 39 weeks i think

The key is to file as soon as you become unemployed, even if you think you might not qualify. There's a waiting period anyway, and you can't get benefits for weeks before you file. Better to apply and find out than wait and lose potential benefits.

Ava Williams
•good advice. i'll probably file this week then

•Smart move. Have your employment history ready - you'll need dates and wages from your last few jobs.

idk why people complain so much about the amount. free money is free money. better than working some minimum wage job
0 coins
Keisha Brown
•It's not 'free money' - you pay into the system through payroll taxes when you work. This is insurance you've already paid for.

•whatever. still money you don't have to work for right now

Just want to add that if you're self-employed or a contractor, you might not qualify for regular UI benefits. There are some exceptions but the rules are different.

Ava Williams
•i'm w2 employee so should be fine i think

Natasha Kuznetsova
•Yeah W2 employees are typically covered as long as you have enough work history.

lol everyone talking about getting hundreds per week and i'm over here getting $295 (the minimum). worked retail for 2 years but i guess my hours weren't consistent enough

Ava Williams
•hey at least you qualified though! $295 is still better than zero

•true. covers my phone bill and gas money at least

For anyone still struggling to get through to ESD, I can't recommend Claimyr enough. Used them twice now when I needed to speak to someone about claim issues. The phone system is just so broken that sometimes you need help getting connected to an actual person.

•seems like a lot of people are having good luck with that service

•Yeah, it's frustrating that we need a third-party service to contact our own state agency, but it works.

one more tip - if you get denied for any reason, don't give up! you can appeal the decision. a lot of people don't realize that and just accept the denial
0 coins
Ava Williams
•good to know. hopefully won't need to appeal but thanks for the heads up

Emma Anderson
•no problem. the appeal process isn't too complicated and sometimes they made mistakes on the initial decision

been reading this thread and just wanted to say that washington's UI system is actually pretty good compared to what my friends in other states deal with. the amounts are decent and the process isn't too terrible if you have all your paperwork ready
0 coins
Ava Williams
•that's reassuring! i was worried it would be a nightmare to deal with

•nah it's not that bad. just be patient with the phone system if you need to call them
