How much unemployment will I get if I make $800 a week in Washington?
I'm trying to figure out what my weekly benefit amount would be if I lose my job. I currently make about $800 per week gross. Does anyone know how Washington ESD calculates the weekly benefit amount? I've looked at their website but the formula is confusing. Just want to know what to expect if I need to file a claim.

Washington ESD uses your highest quarter from the base period to calculate benefits. At $800/week you're making about $41,600 annually. Your weekly benefit would likely be around $400-450 but it depends on your work history over the past 18 months.

•Thanks! So it's roughly half of what I make now? That's better than I thought.

•not exactly half, there's a formula they use based on your highest earning quarter

The maximum weekly benefit in Washington is $999 for 2025, but most people don't get the max. Your benefit is calculated as follows: take your highest quarter earnings from your base period, divide by 26, then multiply by 0.0385. There's also a minimum of $295/week.

•Wait that formula seems off? I thought it was divide the highest quarter by 26 then that's your weekly amount

•No, you're thinking of a different calculation. Washington uses the 0.0385 multiplier after dividing by 26. It's more complex than just dividing by 26.

•I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for weeks to get my exact benefit calculation but their phone lines are impossible. Anyone have luck getting through?

I was in a similar situation last year making around $750/week. My Washington ESD weekly benefit ended up being $389. But it took forever to get approved because of adjudication issues.

•What kind of adjudication issues did you have? I'm worried about delays if I need to file.

•They needed to verify my reason for separation from my previous job. Took 6 weeks to resolve even though it was straightforward.

if you're having trouble reaching esd by phone you should try claimyr.com - they helped me get through when i couldnt reach anyone for my benefit calculation questions. theres a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works

•Never heard of that service. Is it legit or just another scam?

•totally legit, i was skeptical too but it actually got me connected to a real washington esd agent who answered my questions

•I might try this. I've been on hold for hours multiple times with no luck getting through to ESD.

Keep in mind that your base period matters a lot. If you haven't been working at $800/week for very long, your benefit calculation might be based on lower earnings from earlier quarters.

•I've been at this job for about 8 months. Before that I was making less, around $600/week. Will that hurt my benefit amount?

Eduardo Silva
•It could. Washington ESD looks at your earnings in the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters. So some of your base period might include the lower wage job.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN! I've been waiting 8 weeks for my claim to process and nobody at Washington ESD can give me a straight answer about my benefit amount. They keep saying it's in adjudication but won't tell me why!!

•8 weeks is crazy long, have you tried filing an appeal or contacting your legislators?

•Adjudication delays are unfortunately common right now. The key is getting an actual person on the phone to explain what's holding up your claim.

•I've tried calling hundreds of times! The system hangs up on you or puts you on hold forever.

Just went through this process myself. Made about $820/week and my Washington ESD benefit came out to $427/week. The calculation seemed pretty accurate based on my highest quarter earnings.

•That's really helpful, thanks! How long did it take from filing to getting your first payment?

•About 3 weeks, but I had no complications. If there are any issues with your work history or reason for separation it can take much longer.

dont forget you have to do job search activities too. washington requires 3 job search activities per week and you have to log them in WorkSourceWA

•Good point. What counts as a job search activity?

•applying for jobs, networking events, career counseling, stuff like that. just make sure you document everything

I used Claimyr when I needed to update my job search requirements and it was super helpful. Got connected to an ESD agent who walked me through the whole process instead of trying to figure it out from their confusing website.

•How much does that service cost? I'm already tight on money.

•I think it's worth it when you consider how much time you save not calling ESD over and over. Plus you actually get answers instead of getting hung up on.

Also remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld from your weekly benefits or pay quarterly estimated taxes.

•Oh I didn't think about taxes. Should I have them withheld or pay later?

•I'd recommend having them withheld so you don't get hit with a big tax bill next year. You can set up withholding in your ESD account.

been on unemployment twice in washington and the benefit calculator on their website is pretty accurate if you know your quarterly earnings. but good luck actually getting through to verify anything with a real person

Pro tip: if you do need to call Washington ESD, try calling right when they open at 8am or during lunch hour around 12:30pm. Those are the best times to actually get through.

•Yeah it's still hit or miss but better than calling in the afternoon when everyone else is calling too

My friend used that Claimyr service and said it was a game changer for getting through to ESD. She had been trying to reach them about her benefit amount for weeks with no luck.

Keep in mind that if you have any gaps in employment or worked part-time during your base period, it can affect your benefit calculation. Washington ESD looks at your total wages, not just your current salary.

Freya Andersen
•I had about 2 months where I was only working part-time. Will that significantly reduce my benefits?

Ethan Campbell
•It depends on which quarter that falls in and your total earnings. The good news is ESD uses your highest quarter, so if you have one really good quarter it helps offset lower quarters.

Just remember that even if you qualify for $400+ per week, you still need to file your weekly claims on time and meet all the requirements. Miss a week and you lose that money permanently.

•This is so important! I missed filing one week because I forgot and they wouldn't let me backdate it.

Freya Andersen
•Good to know. What day of the week do you have to file the weekly claims?

Yuki Watanabe
•You can file anytime Sunday through the following Saturday for the previous week. But don't wait - file as soon as the week is available.
