How many weeks can you get unemployment benefits in Washington?
I just started collecting unemployment and I'm trying to plan my job search timeline. Does anyone know exactly how many weeks of regular UI benefits you can get in Washington state? I've heard different numbers and want to make sure I understand what I'm working with. Also wondering if there are any extensions available right now or if it's just the standard amount.

In Washington, you can get up to 26 weeks of regular unemployment benefits in most cases. This is based on your base year earnings and how much you made during your highest quarter. The exact number of weeks depends on your individual claim calculation.

•Thanks! So it's not automatically 26 weeks for everyone? How do they calculate the exact number?

Aria Park
•Right, it's not automatic. Washington ESD uses a formula based on your total base year wages divided by your highest quarter wages. Most people get the full 26 weeks but some might get less depending on their work history.

I got 23 weeks on my claim last year. It really depends on how much you worked and earned during your base year period. You can see your exact benefit duration on your monetary determination letter from Washington ESD.

•What's a monetary determination letter? I filed my claim but haven't seen anything like that yet.

•It's the document that shows your weekly benefit amount and how many weeks you're eligible for. Should arrive within a week or two of filing your initial claim.

Just wanted to mention that if you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your claim details, I recently used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it was a game changer. They help you actually reach an agent instead of getting stuck in that endless phone loop. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•How much does something like that cost? I've been trying to call for weeks about my adjudication status.

•It's worth it just for the time savings honestly. I was spending hours every day trying to get through and this got me connected in under an hour.

•That's interesting, I might check that out if I run into issues. Thanks for sharing!

Currently there are no extended benefits available in Washington state. We're not in a high unemployment period so it's just the standard duration. During the pandemic there were extensions but those ended in 2021.

•So disappointing. 26 weeks goes by so fast when you're actually looking for decent work.

•I understand the frustration. That's why it's important to start your job search immediately and meet all the work search requirements to avoid any delays or issues.

Wait I'm confused about the base year thing. When exactly is the base year period? Is it the last 12 months before I filed?

Aria Park
•No, it's not the last 12 months. The base year is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you filed your claim. So if you filed in January 2025, your base year would typically be January 2024 through December 2024.

•That seems weird, why not just use the most recent earnings?

•It's because employers need time to report wages to Washington ESD. The system needs complete quarters of data to calculate benefits accurately.

been on unemployment twice and both times got 26 weeks. think most people get the full amount unless they only worked part time or something

•Good to know, thanks! Were you able to find work before your benefits ran out both times?

•first time yes, second time it was close but found something in week 24. definitely motivating when youre running out of time

One thing to keep in mind is that you need to file your weekly claims every week to actually receive those benefits. Missing a week or filing late can cause issues with your payments.

•What happens if you miss filing a weekly claim? Can you make it up?

Noah Ali
•You might be able to request a late claim but it's not guaranteed. Washington ESD is pretty strict about the weekly filing requirements. Better to set a reminder and file on time every week.

•I've been setting phone alarms every Saturday to remind myself. Don't want to mess this up.

This whole system is so confusing. I wish they just gave everyone the same amount for the same number of weeks. All these calculations and base years make no sense.

•The calculations are designed to relate your benefits to what you actually earned while working. It's meant to be fair based on your contribution to the system through payroll taxes.

•I guess that makes sense but it's still confusing for regular people trying to figure out their benefits.

If you're worried about running out of benefits, make sure you're doing your job search activities properly. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and they do audit these. Don't want to get disqualified and lose weeks.

•What counts as a job search activity? I've been applying to jobs but not sure what else I should be doing.

•Job applications, networking events, career fairs, WorkSource workshops, informational interviews. Keep detailed records of everything you do.

Speaking of getting information from Washington ESD, if anyone needs to actually talk to someone there about their specific benefit duration or any other claim issues, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier has been really helpful for me and several people I know. Way better than trying to call on your own.

•I tried it last week after seeing it mentioned somewhere else and actually got through to resolve my pending issue. Worth it just for the stress relief of not having to keep calling.

•Might have to try this. I've been calling for 2 weeks about my monetary determination.

For those asking about extensions, Washington does have an Extended Benefits program but it only kicks in when unemployment rates are high statewide. We haven't qualified for it since the pandemic ended.

•What's the unemployment rate threshold for extended benefits?
0 coins
Jordan Walker
•It's triggered when the state's unemployment rate reaches certain levels compared to previous years. The exact formula is complex but basically we need to be in a recession for it to activate.

I'm on week 18 of my benefits and starting to panic about finding something soon. 26 weeks seemed like a lot when I started but it goes fast!

•Same boat here, on week 20. The pressure definitely increases as you get closer to the end.

•Use these last weeks to really intensify your search. Consider expanding your geographic area or looking at adjacent fields to your experience.

•Good advice, I've been too picky about location. Time to cast a wider net.

Just want to add that if you do find part-time work while on unemployment, you might still be able to get partial benefits. Don't assume you have to choose between working part-time and collecting unemployment.
0 coins
Lucas Notre-Dame
•How does that work exactly? Do they reduce your weekly benefit amount?
0 coins
Amara Torres
•Yes, they deduct a portion of your earnings from your weekly benefit but you can often still receive some unemployment money. There's a formula they use based on how much you earn.

Remember that even after your regular benefits end, you should keep your claim active in case any extensions become available later. Don't just abandon your account.

•How do you keep it active if you're not getting benefits anymore?

•You continue filing your weekly claims even if they show zero dollars. This maintains your claim status in case anything changes with benefit programs.

One last thing about getting help with benefit questions - I know I mentioned Claimyr a couple times but honestly after spending months trying to get answers from Washington ESD the traditional way, having a service that actually gets you through to speak with someone is invaluable. Especially when you're dealing with time-sensitive issues about your benefit duration or eligibility.

•I was skeptical at first but used it yesterday and spoke with an ESD rep within 30 minutes. They clarified exactly how many weeks I have left on my claim.
