Do WorkSource requirements continue after stopping UI claims?

Quick question about WorkSource that's been confusing me. I've been on UI for about 2 months and regularly working with the WorkSource folks (attending their workshops, doing the follow-up appointments, etc). My job hunt is going well and I might not need to file claims much longer, but I'm wondering if WorkSource will still expect me to participate in their services after I stop claiming UI benefits? Do they continue to reach out even when you're no longer filing weekly claims? Or does the requirement to work with them end once you stop claiming? Just trying to plan ahead and understand my obligations. Thanks!

Once you stop filing weekly claims, you're no longer required to fulfill the WorkSource requirements. The job search activities (including WorkSource participation) are specifically tied to receiving unemployment benefits. When you stop claiming, those requirements end immediately. They might still send you automated emails for a while until their system updates, but you don't need to respond or participate.

Thank you! That's exactly what I needed to know. I wasn't sure if I had some ongoing obligation to them even after stopping UI claims.

Not entirely true in my experience! They actually called me THREE TIMES after I stopped claiming to check if I wanted help with my job search. But it wasn't required - they were just offering services. I think it depends on which WorkSource office you're working with and how aggressive they are with follow-up.

I had this same question last year! The WorkSource requirements (attending workshops, meetings, etc.) are conditions for receiving unemployment benefits. The moment you stop filing weekly claims, those requirements stop. It's outlined in the ESD handbook, but not super clear. BUT - WorkSource services are still available to you even when you're not on unemployment. They're actually a pretty good resource if you're still job hunting. I continued using some of their resume services even after I found part-time work and stopped claiming UI.

Thanks for the detailed explanation! That makes sense. I might actually take advantage of some of their services voluntarily, but it's good to know I won't be penalized if I don't participate after stopping claims.

When I stopped claiming last year they kept sending me emails about workshops for like 2 months!!! I was so confused and thought I was gonna get in trouble for not going but then I called ESD and they said I was fine to ignore it. System just takes a while to update I guess???

This happens because WorkSource and ESD are connected but separate systems. WorkSource offers services to both unemployed and employed individuals, while ESD administers benefits. When you stop claiming, the WorkSource system doesn't immediately recognize your status change - it takes time for the databases to sync up. Those emails are automated and don't indicate any requirement.

I worked at WorkSource for 3 years, and I can tell you definitively that once you stop claiming UI benefits, you are NOT required to participate in WorkSource activities. However, your account remains active in our system for quite some time, which is why you might continue getting automated notifications. Many people actually find value in WorkSource services even after UI ends - we offer job fairs, resume help, and interview coaching that can be useful regardless of your benefit status. But it's 100% voluntary once you're not receiving benefits.

The WorkSource requirements vary based on your specific situation - some people are exempt from certain requirements based on their work history, industry, or other factors. But the consistent rule is that once you stop filing weekly claims, all WorkSource requirements end immediately.

Has anyone else had TERRIBLE experiences trying to reach ESD to clarify these kinds of questions? I spent THREE WEEKS trying to get through to someone at ESD about my WorkSource requirements (kept getting disconnected or waiting for hours). Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an ESD agent in less than 20 minutes. They have this demo video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 The ESD agent confirmed what others are saying here - once you stop claiming benefits, you're free from the WorkSource requirements. But if you're still claiming and miss WorkSource appointments, they can deny your benefits. So keep up with it until you officially stop filing!

Thank you for confirming that! And yeah, reaching ESD has been nearly impossible. I'll check out that service if I need to get in touch with them again. Sometimes you just need to hear it directly from the source.

Just to add one important point that hasn't been mentioned: If you stop claiming UI because you found work, but then lose that job and need to reopen your claim within the same benefit year, you'll need to re-engage with WorkSource requirements. The benefit year typically lasts 52 weeks from when you first applied, even if you stop claiming for a while in between.

That's really helpful to know - I hadn't considered that scenario. I'll keep all my WorkSource contact info just in case I need to restart my claim later in the benefit year. Thanks for pointing that out!

To summarize what everyone's said and add clarity (I'm an employment counselor): 1. WorkSource requirements ONLY apply when actively claiming UI benefits 2. Once you stop filing weekly claims, requirements end immediately 3. You may continue receiving automated emails/calls for a while (systems take time to update) 4. You can still voluntarily use WorkSource services even when not on UI 5. If you reopen your claim in the same benefit year, requirements resume Also worth noting - in 2025, all UI claimants must complete 3 documented job search activities each week. WorkSource participation counts toward these activities but isn't always required depending on your situation.
