Can you renew unemployment benefits in Washington - my claim expires next month
My unemployment claim is set to expire in about 3 weeks and I'm still looking for work. I've been collecting UI benefits for almost a year now after getting laid off from my warehouse job. Does anyone know if you can renew unemployment benefits in Washington or do I have to file a completely new claim? I'm worried about having a gap in benefits since I still haven't found anything stable. The job market in my area is pretty rough right now.

You can't technically 'renew' unemployment benefits in Washington. Once your benefit year ends, you'll need to file a new initial claim if you're still unemployed. The good news is that if you've worked and earned enough wages since your last claim started, you might qualify for a new benefit year.

•I haven't worked at all since I got laid off, so I probably don't have enough new wages. What happens then?

•If you don't have sufficient wages for a new claim, you might be eligible for an extension or you could look into other programs. But definitely file a new claim anyway - Washington ESD will determine your eligibility.

I went through this exact situation last year. You have to file a new claim but the process is basically the same as your original claim. Just make sure you file it before your current benefit year expires so there's no gap.

•Did you have any issues with the new claim? I'm worried about getting stuck in adjudication again.

•Mine went through pretty smoothly since I had already been in their system. Just had to verify some employment information.

Actually ran into problems when I tried to file my new claim online. The system kept giving me errors and I couldn't get through on the phone lines. Ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get connected to an actual Washington ESD agent who helped me file over the phone. Way easier than dealing with the busy signals. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that service before. Is it legit? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

•Yeah it's totally legit. They basically just help you get through to the right person at Washington ESD without having to redial 100 times. Saved me hours of frustration.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already strapped for cash.

•It's reasonable considering the time it saves you, but I'd rather not discuss specific costs on here. Check their site for current pricing.

The Washington ESD website says you need to have earned at least $1,000 in covered wages during your benefit year OR have qualifying wages in the base period for a new claim. If you don't meet either, you might be out of luck until you work again.

•That's not entirely accurate. There are sometimes extensions available even if you don't qualify for a new regular claim. It depends on unemployment rates and federal programs.

•@profile7 You're right, I should have mentioned that. Extensions do sometimes happen but they're not guaranteed.

this is so confusing why cant they just make it automatic if youre still unemployed??

•It's designed to encourage people to find work and to ensure benefits go to those who have recent work history. The system isn't perfect but there are reasons for the requirements.

•i get that but when theres no jobs available it just punishes people for the economy being bad

I'm in the same boat - my claim expires in February. Been applying to jobs constantly but nothing's panning out. Really hoping there's some kind of extension program available because I have no idea how I'll pay rent otherwise.

•At least I'm not the only one dealing with this. The stress is killing me.

•Tell me about it. I wake up every morning checking my email hoping for a job interview but it's just rejection emails or nothing at all.

Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims right up until your benefit year ends. Some people think they should stop filing once they know their claim is ending but you need to keep certifying to get paid for those final weeks.

•Good point, I hadn't thought about that. Thanks for the reminder.

The system is such a mess. I tried calling Washington ESD 47 times yesterday and either got a busy signal or got disconnected after waiting on hold for an hour. How are we supposed to get help when we can't even talk to anyone?

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. Got tired of wasting entire days trying to get through. Now when I need to talk to Washington ESD I just use their service instead of playing phone tag.

•Might have to look into that. This is ridiculous that we need a third party service just to contact our own state agency.

Check the Washington ESD website under 'File a New Claim' - they have a whole section about filing after your benefit year expires. The process starts online but you might need to call if you have complications.

•I'll check that out. Hopefully the online system works better than trying to call.

whatever you do dont wait until the last minute like i did. filed my new claim the day after my old one expired and there was a 2 week delay in processing. lost 2 weeks of benefits because of that gap

•Oh no, that's exactly what I was worried about. I'll make sure to file early.

•You can actually file your new claim during the last week of your current benefit year to avoid any gaps. Washington ESD allows this.

Been collecting unemployment for 8 months now and still haven't found anything in my field. The job search requirements are brutal - having to apply to 3 jobs per week and document everything. At this point I'm applying to stuff I'm overqualified for just to meet the requirements.

Connor Gallagher
•Same here. I've applied to probably 200 jobs at this point. It's soul crushing.

•The job search requirements continue even when you file a new claim, so be prepared for that to keep going.

If you've been on unemployment for almost a year, you should definitely file a new claim before your current one expires. Even if you don't qualify based on wages, Washington ESD needs to make that determination officially. Sometimes there are programs or extensions you might not know about.

•That's reassuring. I'll definitely file the new claim just in case.

My cousin went through this and ended up having to take a part-time retail job just to get some wages on record so she could file a new claim later. Not ideal but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

•I've been thinking about that too. Maybe I should take something temporary just to get back into the system.

•Just remember that if you take a job, even part-time, you have to report those wages on your weekly claims. It might reduce your benefits but it could help you qualify for a new claim later.

I used Claimyr when I had issues with my new claim filing. The Washington ESD agent they connected me with was super helpful and walked me through the whole process. Much better than trying to figure it out on my own through the website.

•Seems like a lot of people have had good experiences with that service. I might give it a try if I run into problems.

Just want to add that even if your new claim gets denied, you should appeal if you think there's been a mistake. The appeals process can take a while but sometimes they catch errors that way.

•Good to know. Hopefully it won't come to that but I'll keep it in mind.

One more thing - make sure all your contact information is up to date in your account before you file the new claim. Washington ESD will need to reach you for verification and if your info is wrong it can delay everything.

•Thanks for all the advice everyone. I feel much better prepared now. Going to file my new claim next week.

I'm a newcomer here and going through the exact same situation. My claim expires in a few weeks and I'm terrified about the gap in benefits. Reading through all these responses has been really helpful - it sounds like filing a new claim early is the key, even if you're not sure you'll qualify. The fact that so many people have had to use third-party services like Claimyr just to get through to Washington ESD shows how broken the system is. It's frustrating that we have to jump through so many hoops when we're already struggling to find work in this job market.
