Which NY counties have the lowest unemployment rates for job searching?
I'm currently on unemployment and need to figure out where I should be focusing my job search efforts. Does anyone know which areas in New York have the lowest unemployment rates right now? My NYS Department of Labor counselor mentioned that some counties are doing much better than others but didn't give me specifics. I'm willing to relocate if it means better job prospects and getting off UI faster. Any insights would be helpful!

From what I've seen, the NYC metro area and Albany-Schenectady region typically have some of the lower unemployment rates in the state. The tech and government sectors there are pretty stable. You can check the NYS Department of Labor's labor market info section on their website for county-by-county breakdowns - they update those stats quarterly.

•Thanks! I'll check out that section on the NYS Department of Labor site. Are those areas good for someone with retail management experience?

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor for career counseling services, I had good luck using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to actually reach someone. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Made it way easier than trying to call during peak hours.

•Never heard of that service but anything is better than sitting on hold for 2 hours just to get disconnected!

The unemployment system is so broken anyway, doesn't matter what the rates are if you can't get decent paying jobs. I've been on and off UI for months because everything available pays less than my weekly benefit amount. It's ridiculous.

•I feel you on that. The job search requirements don't account for the fact that sometimes taking a low-paying job actually puts you in a worse financial position.

Just wanted to add that when you're looking at unemployment rates, also consider cost of living. A county with low unemployment might have super high rent that eats up any salary advantage. Good luck with your search!
