NY unemployment tax refund separate from regular tax return - still waiting for letter

Been waiting forever for my unemployment tax adjustment but just got some clarity today. I was on hold with the NYS Tax Dept for nearly TWO HOURS(!!!) and finally spoke with someone who explained something important. That extra $64 payment I received with my regular tax refund? She said that was NOT my unemployment tax refund - it was just a regular tax credit. The unemployment tax refund is completely separate and I'll be getting a letter about it first, then the money will come a couple weeks after that. So heads up to everyone still waiting - if you haven't gotten a specific letter about your unemployment tax adjustment, they probably haven't even processed yours yet! They are NOT combining your regular state tax refund with the unemployment tax adjustment in the same payment. So that refund you already got? Completely different thing. Anyone else in the same boat? How long have you been waiting?

This is actually really helpful information - thank you for sharing! You're absolutely right that the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance processes unemployment tax adjustments separately from regular tax returns. For 2025, they're processing these adjustments in batches based on filing date, and they are indeed sending notification letters before issuing refunds. Few important points for everyone: - The notification letter comes first, then the refund follows 2-3 weeks later - These adjustments are for the special NY unemployment tax exemption on the first $10,300 of benefits - The timeline is running about 10-12 weeks from when your regular return was processed - You can check your account status at tax.ny.gov under "View your refund status"

Thank you! I checked that status page but all it shows is my regular refund that I already got. Nothing about the unemployment adjustment. Does that mean they haven't started processing it yet?

im in EXACTLY the same situation got $53 extra with my refund lady on phone said that was some child tax thing not related to unemployment at all. been waiting since february and still no letter!!!! this is ridiculous

The system is completely BROKEN! I've been waiting since JANUARY and nothing! No letter, no refund, NOTHING! Then they have the nerve to say "be patient" - it's MY MONEY they're sitting on! Meanwhile I'm behind on bills and they couldn't care less.

Oh thank god someone else is dealing with this too. I've been so confused because I got my regular tax refund back in March with a small extra amount ($47 in my case), and I thought that was my unemployment tax adjustment but it seemed way too small. I called 3 times and couldn't get through to anyone. Does anyone know if there's a way to check online if they've processed your unemployment adjustment specifically? The regular refund status page doesn't show anything about it for me either.

Unfortunately, there isn't a separate tracking system specifically for the unemployment tax adjustments. The main NYS tax refund status page only shows your regular refund. The best indicator is receiving that notification letter, which means your adjustment has been processed and the refund will follow. If it's been more than 12 weeks since your regular return was processed and you haven't received the letter, you might want to try contacting them again. The morning hours (right when they open) tend to have slightly shorter wait times.

Got my letter yesterday after waiting since FEBRUARY!! Says refund will be deposited within 2-3 weeks. Check your mailboxes people!

That gives me some hope! Did your letter say how much you're getting back? I'm trying to figure out if it's even worth all this waiting.

Yep, mine said $412. Not life-changing but definitely worth getting!

If anyone needs to speak with a NY tax representative but can't get through after multiple attempts, I discovered a service called Claimyr that helped me finally reach someone. I was in the same situation - waiting for months with no letter, and regular phone calls kept disconnecting me. Claimyr basically calls for you and then connects you when they reach a representative. Saved me hours of frustration. They have a video that explains how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE The website is claimyr.com - after using it, I found out my unemployment tax adjustment was delayed because there was a discrepancy between what my employer reported and what I entered on my return. Worth checking into if you've been waiting a long time.

Are you serious?? We have to PAY someone just to talk to the tax department now? This country is completely broken. We pay taxes but can't even talk to the people who collect them without going through some private company. Unbelievable.

I understand the frustration, but after spending nearly 8 hours over multiple days trying to get through, it was worth it for me. Found out my adjustment was stuck because they needed additional documentation - something they never bothered to tell me about. At least now it's being processed.

wait i'm confused. so that extra $82 i got with my refund in april might not be from unemployment? i thought it was just really low because i only collected unemployment for like 6 weeks last year. now i'm wondering if i have more coming...

yep thats exactly what OP is saying!! call them and check but probbly that wasnt your unemployment money! they do it totally separate

Here's an update on the NY unemployment tax adjustment processing timelines for 2025: - If you filed your tax return in January-February: Letters should have been sent by now - If you filed in March: Letters are being sent now through mid-June - If you filed in April: Letter processing begins mid-June - If you filed with an extension: Processing begins after regular returns If you filed early but still haven't received your letter, there could be a few reasons: 1. There was an issue with your return that required manual review 2. Your reported unemployment benefits didn't match their records 3. You may have already accounted for the exemption on your original return The NY Tax Department is severely backlogged this year, so some cases are taking longer than their estimated timeframes. If it's been more than 4 weeks beyond these timeframes, it's worth trying to contact them directly.

This is really helpful information! I filed in March so it sounds like I should be getting my letter any day now. Is there any way to know how much I might get back? I received about $7,200 in unemployment benefits last year.

The amount will depend on your tax rate and specific situation, but with $7,200 in benefits, you might see somewhere around $300-$450 if you're in a typical NY tax bracket. It varies widely based on your total income and other factors though.

My husband just got his letter yesterday but I'm still waiting for mine even though we filed on the same day (but separate returns). Anyone else experiencing different timing for family members? I'm starting to worry something's wrong with my return specifically.

Yes! Same thing with me and my boyfriend. He got his letter two weeks ago and his refund this week. I filed a week BEFORE him and still nothing. Makes no sense!

I waited 3 months for my letter last year and the adjustment was only $86... seriously not worth all the stress. But at least now I know why that random extra $51 came with my refund this year (it was the child tax credit thing). The whole system is so confusing.

has anyone tried checking the status by calling the automated number?? the website doesnt show anything about my unemployment adjustment but maybe the phone line has more info??

0 coins

i tried that yesterday. the automated system only has info about your regular refund, nothing about the unemployment adjustment. waste of time honestly 😕

All of this is BY DESIGN! They deliberately make it confusing and slow so people give up and don't get the money they're owed. I bet thousands of people think that little extra on their regular refund WAS the unemployment adjustment and will never follow up. Meanwhile the state keeps MILLIONS that should be going back to workers who were laid off. CRIMINAL!

While the process is certainly frustrating, I want to clarify that these adjustments are actually being processed automatically - you don't have to apply or follow up to receive what you're owed. The separate processing and letter system is actually meant to provide clear documentation of the adjustment for your records. The delays are unfortunate but primarily due to understaffing rather than intentional withholding.

Update: My letter finally arrived yesterday! Says I'll be getting $362 back for the unemployment tax adjustment, and it should arrive within 2-3 weeks. I filed my taxes in mid-March, so it took almost exactly 12 weeks for them to process the adjustment. Hope this helps anyone still waiting - hang in there!

Congrats! That's great news! Fingers crossed mine comes soon too. Did they send it by email or physical mail?

It came as a physical letter in the mail. Nothing showed up in my email or online account at all beforehand.
