NY unemployment tax refund question - filed after March 26 deadline

Hey everyone, I just realized I might have messed up with timing. I filed my taxes after March 26 this year and I'm wondering if I'll still get the unemployment tax refund included with my regular tax return? Or am I too late and out of luck? lol Anyone know how this works with NY unemployment taxes specifically?

The March 26 date isn't actually a hard deadline for receiving your unemployment tax benefits. When you file your taxes (even after March 26), the unemployment tax exclusion should still be calculated in your return automatically if you're eligible. The IRS processes returns continuously, so you should still receive any unemployment tax benefits you're entitled to with your normal refund. It might just take a bit longer since you filed later in the season.

Oh that's such a relief! I was panicking thinking I missed out completely. Do you know if NY state handles this the same way? Will the state refund also come with my regular state tax refund?

That's good to hear! How long did it take to get your refund after filing that late?

Wait I'm confused now. Are we talking about the unemployment tax EXCLUSION or just regular taxes on unemployment benefits?? Because I thought the exclusion was only for 2020-2021 during covid. Is there a new exclusion for 2025 taxes?? I've been paying taxes on all my unemployment checks this year assuming I'd owe!

You're absolutely right to question this. For 2025 tax filings, there is currently no special federal unemployment tax exclusion like we had during COVID. You do need to pay regular taxes on unemployment benefits for current tax years. The March 26 date the original poster mentioned isn't actually relevant to current tax filings - they might be thinking of a deadline from previous tax years during the pandemic exclusion period.

The deadline you're talking about doesn't matter the way you think. When you file your taxes (even if it's late April or May), the system calculates everything together. Your refund includes all eligible credits and deductions regardless of when you filed as long as it's before the final deadline (usually April 15th unless extended). But remember that NY state does tax unemployment benefits differently than federal. New York doesn't offer the same exclusions that the feds sometimes do. You should check your specific situation on the NY state tax website to be sure about your case.

Thanks, I appreciate the detailed response! I'll definitely check the NY state site to make sure I understand the state-specific rules.

My brother works for the IRS and said as long as you file before the deadline (April 15th usually) you're totally fine! The March date is probably just something the tax software company made up to get people to file earlier lol

That's not entirely accurate. The March 26 date the original poster mentioned was likely referring to a specific processing deadline from previous tax years, possibly during the pandemic unemployment benefit exclusion period. There are sometimes internal processing dates that matter for certain tax situations, though they don't typically affect regular filers. For 2025 taxes, standard April 15 deadlines apply unless there's been an announced extension.

I tried calling the NY unemployment tax helpline for THREE DAYS to ask this exact question and couldn't get through to anyone! The system is completely broken. I kept getting disconnected or stuck on hold for hours. Has anyone else had this problem trying to reach them?

I had the same issue last month trying to get clarification on my unemployment tax forms. After struggling for days, I finally used Claimyr to get through to an agent. It connected me to a representative in under 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. They have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE. Their website is claimyr.com - definitely worth checking out if you're still having trouble getting through.

To summarize for everyone confused about this topic: 1. For 2025 taxes, unemployment benefits ARE taxable income both federally and in NY state 2. There is no special March 26 deadline that affects your refund eligibility 3. File by April 15th to avoid late penalties (unless the IRS announces an extension) 4. Your tax software or preparer should automatically calculate the correct tax treatment for your unemployment benefits 5. If you need specific guidance for your situation, speak with a tax professional or try to reach the NY tax department directly Hope this helps clear things up!

This is super helpful - thank you for breaking it down so clearly! I think I was confusing this with some special covid rule from previous years.

WAIT ONE MORE THING!! Make sure you opted to have taxes withheld from your weekly unemployment payments!!! I didn't realize I needed to select this when I first applied and ended up owing a BUNCH at tax time last year. It was a total nightmare!!!!

Yikes, thanks for the warning! I did select the withholding option when I applied, so hopefully I'm covered there. Sorry you had to learn that the hard way!
