NY unemployment payments stopped in July - how to get backpay after returning to work?
I'm having a serious problem with my NY unemployment benefits. Everything was going fine until July 2025 when my payments suddenly stopped without any explanation. I refiled my claim right away in July, but I STILL haven't received any funds since then. I've been dutifully filing my weekly certifications every single week from July through September. Now I've actually returned to work as of October, so I can no longer file weekly claims. But I'm still owed all that backpay from July through September! How do I get the DOL to pay me the money they owe me for those months? Do I need to file some special form since I'm now employed? I really need that money to catch up on bills that piled up when I wasn't getting paid.

You need to contact NYSDOL directly to resolve this backpay issue. Since you've returned to work, you need to specifically request your backdated payments for the period where you properly certified but didn't receive benefits. The system won't automatically process these now that you're employed. Call their claims center at 888-209-8124 and explain that you need to speak with someone about missed payments for a specific period. Have your dates ready when you call.

Thank you! I've tried calling that number literally 20+ times and can never get through. It either disconnects me or says they're too busy. Is there another way to contact them? I feel like I'm going crazy trying to get a human on the phone.

I had this EXACT same problem last year! My payments stopped randomly and I couldn't get anyone on the phone for weeks. I finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that gets you through to an actual NY unemployment agent. They have this system that holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of redial hell. Check their demo video: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Once I finally spoke with someone, they fixed my backpay in one call. The agent told me it was some system flag on my account that needed to be manually cleared. In my case, they had randomly flagged me for an employment verification or something.

Omg thank you!! I'll check that out today. Did they fix all your back weeks in one call? I'm so worried they'll make me jump through a million hoops to get my money.

Yes! They fixed everything in one call once I explained the situation clearly. The key was getting to actually speak with someone who could see my full claim history. Just make sure you have your employment dates, when payments stopped, and confirmation that you certified each week. They'll check your certification history on their end too.

But did you eventually get all your back pay? I've already waited 3 months and now I'm not even certifying anymore since I'm working!

This happens all the time with NY unemployment! The system is BROKEN! They randomly stop paying people and then make it impossible to reach anyone. I bet they do it on purpose hoping people will give up and not get their money. I had to call over 200 times before getting through last year. The whole system needs to be investigated.

While it's certainly frustrating, there's usually a specific reason for payment interruptions. Common causes include: 1. Quarterly wage review flags 2. Identity verification requirements 3. Work search documentation requests 4. Employment status changes 5. System glitches that need manual correction The key is documenting that you properly certified each week during the period in question. Once you reach an agent, they'll be able to see your certification history and resolve the backpay issue, assuming you met all eligibility requirements during that time.

When my payments stopped in August, I discovered you can also try messaging them through your NY.gov account. Go to your unemployment dashboard and look for the secure message center. Sometimes they respond faster there than by phone. Include your full name, last 4 of SSN, and clearly state which weeks you're missing payment for. My situation was different but worth trying multiple contact methods.

Thanks for the tip! I'll try sending a message through my account too. I'm just worried because now that I'm working again, will that affect my ability to get the backpay I'm owed?

Your current employment status shouldn't affect backpay for weeks you were eligible and properly certified. Those weeks are treated separately. Just make it very clear in your message which specific weeks you're missing payment for (give exact dates) and that you've returned to work but need resolution on those past weeks.

For your pending claim, you should also contact NYSDOL directly. After 2 months, something is likely holding up your claim that requires manual intervention. Try calling early in the morning (right when they open) for better chances of getting through.

To directly address your situation: 1. Your backpay eligibility is preserved even though you've returned to work. The system maintains records of your certifications. 2. You need to submit a backdate request specifically for those missed weeks (July-September 2025). This is done by speaking with an agent. 3. Since you've returned to work, make sure to note the exact date you became employed again, as this will be important for determining your final eligible week. 4. Bring documentation of your job search activities for those weeks in question, as they may request this to verify eligibility for the back weeks. 5. Once resolved, payment typically arrives within 2-3 business days for all eligible back weeks at once. The technical term for what you need is a "backdated payment review" for weeks where certification was completed but payment was not issued.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! This makes me feel better knowing there's an actual process for this. Do you know if there's a time limit for requesting backpay? I'm worried because it's already been 3+ months.

There is a time limit, but it's generally quite generous. For 2025, NYSDOL allows backpay requests for up to 12 months from the dates in question. Since you're only going back to July 2025, you're well within that window. The most important thing is that you have documentation showing you certified for those weeks, which the system should have on record. Make sure to specifically request a "backdated payment review" when you speak with an agent.
