NY unemployment benefits stopped - do I need new claim after working just 1 day?

I'm freaking out because my NY unemployment payments suddenly stopped last week. I think I messed up big time. I worked ONE DAY at a temp job about 3 weeks ago, but I didn't think that would affect my whole claim! Nobody told me I needed to file a new claim after working just a single day. The NYSDOL website is super confusing and now I'm worried I won't get any more benefits. My rent is due next week and I'm panicking. Has this happened to anyone else? Do I seriously need to file a whole new claim for working just one day? How long will it take to start getting payments again?

You need to report ANY work and earnings when you certify weekly. Did you report that one day of work when you certified for that week? If not, that could be why your payments stopped.

Yeah I reported the day I worked on my weekly certification and the $87 I earned. But then the next week when I tried to certify it said my benefits were exhausted?? But I should have like 10 more weeks left!!!

THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME!!! The system is literally designed to trip people up. One day of work and suddenly your whole claim gets messed up. I worked 2 days back in January and it took me 6 WEEKS to get my benefits straightened out again. The worst part is you can never talk to an actual person to fix it!!!

6 weeks?!? I can't wait that long... I have bills due now. Did you have to file a completely new claim?

This is a common misunderstanding. If you had work interrupting your unemployment, you don't always need a new claim, but you do need to reopen your existing claim. It sounds like your benefit year might still be active but the claim is closed. Log into your NY.gov account, go to unemployment services, and look for the option to "reopen a claim" rather than "file a new claim." The system should walk you through it. Make sure you have the information about that one day of work (employer, dates, earnings) ready when you do this.

Ok I'll try to reopen instead of filing new! But I can't find that option anywhere on my account... the menu options are so confusing

After dealing with the exact same problem last month, I finally got through to an agent using Claimyr (claimyr.com). It cost a bit but saved me from weeks of frustration. The service calls NYSDOL for you and when they get through, they connect you directly to an agent. Worked in about 45 minutes after trying for days on my own. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE The agent told me that if you work even one day, sometimes the system automatically closes your claim. They can quickly reopen it for you over the phone. Took the agent like 5 minutes to fix once I actually got through.

I've heard about that service! Ridiculous that we have to PAY just to talk to unemployment but I guess when you're desperate...did they get your payments started again quickly after the call??

Yeah, payments started back up the very next certification week. The agent was able to see exactly what happened - turns out my account was just in pending status because of the work day. She was able to release the pending payments while I was on the phone with her.

When did you last cerfity for benifits? Sometimes if you miss a week or two of certifying they automatically close your claim and you gotta reopen it. And FYI you don't need a whole new claim just cuz you worked one day lol

I haven't missed any weeks! I certify every Sunday like clockwork. But the system is definitely saying my benefits are exhausted which makes NO sense

Let me clarify a few things about NY unemployment and working part-time: 1. When you work during a week, you need to report those earnings during your weekly certification. 2. If you work and report earnings, your claim doesn't automatically close or expire. However, depending on your earnings, your weekly benefit amount might be reduced or eliminated for that specific week. 3. If the system is saying your benefits are "exhausted," that typically means one of three things: - You've reached the end of your benefit year - You've received all available benefits in your claim - There's a system error or misinterpretation 4. Since you mentioned having "10 more weeks left," it sounds like a technical issue or misunderstanding. You need to speak with a claims specialist who can look at your specific case. They can see exactly what's happening and fix it immediately. Unfortunately, getting through on the phone is the hardest part.

Thanks so much for explaining this! Definitely sounds like an error then. I'm still in my benefit year and should have weeks remaining. I'll keep trying to call and maybe try that service someone mentioned if I can't get through by tomorrow. This is just so stressful!

This is good advice. For anyone dealing with NY unemployment phone issues, their call center opens at 8:00 AM Monday through Friday. Calling between 8:00-8:30 AM gives you the best chance of getting through. Thursday and Friday tend to be slightly less busy than Monday-Wednesday.

UPDATE: I finally got through to someone! I used that Claimyr service and got connected to an agent in about an hour. Turns out when I reported my one day of work, some flag got triggered in the system that put my claim on hold. The agent was able to see that it was just a temporary job and immediately reactivated my claim. She said my payments should resume with my next certification on Sunday. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for your help.

Excellent! Glad to hear you got it resolved. This is a common issue that unfortunately requires speaking with an actual representative. For future reference, anytime you have unusual work patterns (one-day jobs, etc.), it's a good idea to call and speak with someone to make sure your claim stays active.

So happy for you! The system is SO broken. Makes me mad they put you through all this stress for literally ONE DAY of work. At least you got it fixed before rent was due!

Wow, glad you got this sorted out! This is exactly why I hate the NY unemployment system - it's like they designed it to randomly punish people for working. I had a similar issue last year where I did some freelance work for 3 days and it completely screwed up my claim. Took forever to get it fixed and meanwhile I'm stressing about rent and bills. It's ridiculous that we have to jump through hoops just because we tried to work a little bit. At least now you know for next time that even short-term work can trigger these stupid system flags. Thanks for posting the update - it'll help other people who run into the same problem!

This whole thread has been so helpful! I'm new to this community and dealing with my own unemployment nightmare right now. It's honestly shocking how broken the system is - like they expect us to be mind readers about all these random rules and triggers. The fact that Butch had to PAY a third-party service just to talk to someone at the agency that's supposed to be helping him is absolutely insane. I'm bookmarking that Claimyr service though, because I have a feeling I'm going to need it too. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences here - it makes you feel less alone when you're dealing with this bureaucratic mess!
