You should file as soon as possible! There's no specific deadline like 30 days, but your benefits are calculated from when you file, not when you lost your job. So every week you wait is a week of benefits you might miss out on. The NYS Department of Labor recommends filing within the first week after becoming unemployed.

Technically you can file a claim up to one year after your last day of work, but like the previous poster said, you can't get benefits for weeks before you filed. The waiting period is usually one week anyway, so if you file this week you'd be eligible starting next week. Don't delay - go to the NYS Department of Labor website and file online today.

•Wait there's a one week waiting period? I thought they got rid of that during covid

•The waiting period was waived during the pandemic but it's back now. So your first payable week is actually the week after you file your initial claim.

ugh i made this mistake when i got laid off in march. waited almost 3 weeks thinking i had time to figure things out and lost like $900 in benefits. the system is so confusing and they dont make it clear that you lose money every day you wait!!

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to ask questions or need help with your application, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me connect with an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call and getting busy signals.

Just file online at labor.ny.gov - it's pretty straightforward. You'll need your social security number, employment history for the last 18 months, and reason for separation. The sooner you file the sooner you can start receiving benefits.
