How do you draw unemployment benefits from NYS Department of Labor - complete beginner here
Sorry if this sounds dumb but I've never been unemployed before and have no idea how to draw unemployment benefits. Just got laid off from my warehouse job after 3 years and everyone keeps telling me to 'file for unemployment' but I literally don't know where to start. Do I just go to the NYS Department of Labor website? What information do I need? How long does it take to start getting payments? Really stressed about paying rent next month so any help would be appreciated.

First, don't worry - it's actually pretty straightforward once you know the steps. You'll file your initial claim online at my.ny.gov (the official NYS Department of Labor portal). You'll need your Social Security number, employment history for the last 18 months including employer names and addresses, and your bank info for direct deposit. After filing, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to certify you're still unemployed and looking for work. The whole process usually takes 2-3 weeks to get your first payment if there are no issues.

•Thank you! Do I need pay stubs or anything like that when I file?

•You don't need to upload pay stubs initially, but have them ready in case NYS Department of Labor requests them during processing. They mainly verify employment through employer records.

Here's the step-by-step: 1) Go to my.ny.gov and create an account if you don't have one, 2) Click on 'Unemployment Services' and select 'File a Claim', 3) Answer all the questions honestly about your job separation, 4) Submit your initial claim, 5) Wait for your monetary determination letter (shows your benefit amount), 6) Start filing weekly claims every Sunday. Make sure you're actively looking for work because NYS Department of Labor requires job search activities. Keep a log of where you apply because they might ask for it.

•This is super helpful! How many jobs do I need to apply to each week?

•You need to make at least 3 job contacts per week and keep records. The NYS Department of Labor can audit your job search activities.

ugh the website is such a pain though, I've been trying to call them for weeks about an issue with my claim and can never get through. If you run into problems the phone system is basically useless

•I had the same issue trying to reach someone at NYS Department of Labor about my adjudication. Ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Basically they call on your behalf and connect you when they get through. Saved me hours of frustration.

Just remember that if you were fired for misconduct or quit without good cause, you might not qualify. Also don't lie about anything because they check everything and fraud penalties are no joke.

Good luck! I remember being just as confused when I first filed. Once you get the hang of the weekly claims it becomes routine. Just stay on top of it and don't miss any weeks.
