Do I have to file a BOI report for my LLC before 2025? Need urgent help!
So I've been running my single-member LLC for about 3 years now, bringing in roughly $135k annually, and I just heard something that's freaking me out. Apparently there's some new regulation that requires ALL LLCs to file something called a "BOI report" by January 2025?? And if you don't, there's supposedly a $500 PER DAY fine for non-compliance! I've literally never heard of this BOI report thing until my friend mentioned it casually over drinks last weekend. Nothing from my accountant, nothing in my email, nothing from the state where my LLC is registered. Is this actually legit? Do I really need to file this BOI report for my LLC? And where/how do I even do this? Feeling totally blindsided and don't want to get hit with crazy fines for something I knew nothing about!

Yes, this is absolutely legitimate. The BOI (Beneficial Ownership Information) reporting requirement is part of the Corporate Transparency Act that was enacted to help prevent money laundering and other financial crimes. Every LLC (with some specific exceptions) needs to file this report with FinCEN (Financial Crimes Enforcement Network). The deadline is indeed January 1, 2025 for existing businesses like yours. New businesses formed after January 1, 2024 actually have only 90 days to file. And yes, the potential penalties are severe - civil penalties up to $500 per day and even potential criminal penalties in cases of willful non-compliance. You'll need to provide information about the "beneficial owners" of your business - in your case, just yourself as the single member. This includes your name, birthdate, address, and an identifying number from a government-issued ID (like your driver's license or passport) along with an image of that document.

•Wait, I need to send a copy of my driver's license to some government agency I've never heard of before? This sounds sketchy. How do we know this isn't a scam to collect personal info?

•Do S-corps need to file this too? Or just LLCs? I have a small business that was originally an LLC but we converted to S-corp status last year for tax benefits.

•The BOI filing requirement is legitimate and is being implemented by FinCEN, which is a bureau of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. It's not a scam - it's federal law. You'll submit this information through their secure filing system. The Corporate Transparency Act was actually passed in 2021, but the implementation is happening now. Yes, S-corporations are also required to file the BOI report. The requirement applies to most corporations, LLCs, and similar entities formed by filing documents with a secretary of state or similar office. There are some exemptions for certain types of larger companies that are already heavily regulated, but most small businesses will need to file.

After stressing about this BOI filing stuff for weeks, I found this AI tool called taxr.ai that actually saved me tons of time. I was super confused about whether my specific LLC structure was exempt (I have some unusual ownership arrangements) and how to properly categorize myself for the filing. I uploaded my company docs to https://taxr.ai and their system analyzed everything, confirmed I needed to file, and gave me step-by-step guidance on exactly what information I needed to gather and how to fill out each section correctly. Way better than the generic info I was finding online that didn't address my specific situation.

•Does this tool actually help you submit the filing or just tell you what to do? I'm super overwhelmed by this whole process.

•How much does it cost though? Their website doesn't seem to have clear pricing info and I'm suspicious of services that hide their fees until you're already invested in the process.

•The tool doesn't submit the filing for you - you still need to go through the FinCEN portal for that - but it analyzes your documents and gives you personalized guidance for your specific situation, which saved me tons of research time. They use a credit system where you pay only for what you use rather than a subscription. I found it to be very reasonable for the amount of time it saved me and the peace of mind it gave me that I was doing everything correctly. I can't give exact pricing as it depends on your specific needs and documents.

Just wanted to follow up - I actually tried taxr.ai after asking about it here, and it was super helpful! I had a messy situation with an LLC I inherited partial ownership of, plus my own single-member LLC, and wasn't sure how to handle the BOI reporting for both. The document analysis was surprisingly accurate and caught details I hadn't considered. It flagged that one of my businesses might actually qualify for an exemption due to some specific operational details and saved me from filing unnecessarily. For the other one, it gave me a really clear checklist of exactly what I needed to prepare. Worth every penny for the headache it saved me!

If you need to actually TALK to someone at FinCEN about your BOI filing questions (which I desperately did), good luck getting through their phone system. I tried for DAYS with no success. Then I found this service called Claimyr that basically waits on hold for you and calls you back when a real person is on the line. Went to https://claimyr.com and they have this whole system set up. You can see a demo of how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c - basically they navigate the phone tree for you and wait on hold, then call you when they get a human. Saved me literally hours of hold time, and I finally got answers about my specific LLC situation.

•How does this actually work though? Like do they patch you through to the call or what? I'm confused about how a service can wait on hold for me.

•This sounds like BS honestly. The government doesn't just let random third parties connect calls to them for security reasons. I don't believe this actually works for government agencies.

•The way it works is they use an automated system to call and navigate through the phone menu, then when a real person answers, they connect that call to your phone. It's like having a virtual assistant make the call for you, but automated. The call gets transferred directly to you once a human is on the line. This absolutely works with government agencies - that's literally their specialty. They don't need special access or anything; they're just making the call and transferring it once someone answers. The government agency has no idea a service was used to initiate the call. I was skeptical too before I tried it, but it worked perfectly with FinCEN.

Ok I need to eat my words from yesterday. After getting nowhere with FinCEN's customer service line for a week straight, I broke down and tried Claimyr this morning. It actually worked exactly as advertised. I put in my number, and about 40 minutes later I got a call connecting me directly to a FinCEN representative who was already on the line. Got all my BOI questions answered in about 10 minutes. The agent confirmed that my LLC definitely needs to file, explained the exact process, and directed me to specific resources. Saved me hours of frustration and hold music. Consider me converted from skeptic to believer.

Has anyone actually filled out the BOI report yet? I'm looking at the requirements and they want my home address... I use a PO Box for everything business related for privacy reasons. Can I use that instead? Don't really want my home address in some government database that could get hacked.

•You HAVE to use your residential address on the BOI form. I tried using my business address and my application got rejected. Had to resubmit with my home address. The whole point of this law is transparency about who actually owns these companies, so they're strict about it.

•Well that sucks but thanks for the info. I guess I'll have to use my home address then. Just feels like a privacy invasion when I've been so careful about keeping my home address separate from my business for so long.

Question for anyone who's gone through this: does my accountant count as a "company applicant" who also needs to be listed on the BOI report? My LLC was formed by my accountant on my behalf back in 2020.

•For existing companies formed before January 1, 2024, you don't need to report company applicant information at all - just the beneficial owners. If your LLC was formed in 2020, you only need to report yourself as the beneficial owner, not your accountant who helped set it up. If your LLC had been formed after January 1, 2024, then yes, you would need to include your accountant as a company applicant since they filed the formation documents for you.

•Thank you so much! That's a huge relief - my accountant retired and moved to Florida so I wasn't sure how I was going to get all his information for the filing.
