Will my Oregon OBGYN certification delay my CA pregnancy disability claim? Out-of-state doctor issues
I'm 32 weeks pregnant and about to file for CA disability but I've been panicking about a potential issue. I work remotely for a California company but moved to Portland last year for my husband's job. My OBGYN is here in Oregon, but I'm still covered under California SDI through my employer. Has anyone dealt with an out-of-state doctor certifying their pregnancy disability claim? I keep hearing horror stories about claims being delayed for weeks over minor issues, and I really can't afford any payment gaps when I stop working. My HR department wasn't very helpful - just said 'it should be fine' but couldn't give me any specific information. I'm planning to file next week, but now I'm wondering if I should try to find a CA doctor somehow? Would flying back to CA for one appointment be worth avoiding potential delays? I'm so stressed about this!

I think ur overthinking this. My brother's wife had her doctor in nevada and got her CA disability no problem. It just matters that you work in cali and pay into SDI.

•Really? That's reassuring! Did she experience any delays with processing compared to normal timelines?

Hi there! I had a similar situation last year but with Arizona instead of Oregon. Your out-of-state doctor CAN certify your California pregnancy disability claim, but there are a few extra steps to be aware of: 1. Make absolutely sure your doctor fills out the medical certification form (DE 2501) completely and correctly. Out-of-state providers sometimes miss California-specific requirements. 2. Have your doctor include their medical license number and specify which state it's from. 3. If possible, have your doctor include a brief letter explaining they're your established care provider, especially if they're not familiar with CA SDI. 4. Be prepared for EDD to potentially contact your doctor's office to verify information, so give your doctor's office a heads-up. My claim took about 2 weeks longer than my coworker who used a CA doctor, but it was approved without any major issues. Just make sure you have all your documentation ready before filing!

•Thank you SO much for this detailed response! This is exactly what I needed to know. I'll talk to my doctor at my appointment tomorrow and make sure they understand what's needed. Did you submit your claim online or by mail? I'm wondering if one method works better for out-of-state situations.

•I submitted online through SDI Online and would definitely recommend that route! It's faster and you can track the status. Just make sure to scan and upload clear copies of all medical documentation. One thing I forgot to mention - when you create your SDI Online account, double check that all your personal information matches EXACTLY what's on your doctor's certification (name spelling, address, etc). Even minor discrepancies can trigger delays with out-of-state claims.

my sister had this exact problem!!! her doctor was in nevada but she worked in cali. EDD put a hold on her claim for like 3 weeks saying they needed to "verify the out of state provider" and she couldnt get through to anyone on the phone. she was freaking out cause bills were due. eventually it got approved but the stress was awful

•Oh no, that's exactly what I'm afraid of! Did she ever find out what caused the delay or what she could have done differently? I'm already losing sleep over this.

I handle disability claims for a large employer and deal with this situation fairly regularly. Out-of-state medical providers ARE valid for CA SDI pregnancy claims, but they do often trigger an additional verification step in the EDD process. The best approach: 1. Have your doctor be extremely precise with the medical certification form 2. Include your doctor's NPI number (National Provider Identifier) along with their state license 3. Submit all documentation together rather than separately 4. Keep detailed records of all communication The typical processing time for a pregnancy disability claim with a California doctor is about 7-10 business days. With out-of-state providers, I typically see 14-21 business days. If it goes beyond that, there's likely another issue with your claim. If your claim gets stuck in processing and you can't reach EDD, I recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they've helped many of our employees get through to EDD quickly. They have a good video demo of how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd

•Thank you for this expert advice! I didn't know about the NPI number - I'll definitely ask for that. The timeline difference is helpful to know too so I can budget accordingly. I'll bookmark that Claimyr site just in case I run into problems.

EDD IS THE WORST!!!! I had an out of state doctor (AZ) for my pregnancy disability last year and they made me jump through SO MANY HOOPS!!! First they said they needed more info from my doctor, then they said they couldn't contact my doctor, then they said my doctor didn't respond in time!!! I ended up having to BEG my doctor's office to call EDD directly. Took OVER A MONTH to get my first payment when I had NO INCOME. The whole system is designed to make us give up!!!!

•not everyone has this experience though. my cousin had an out of state doc and got her benefits in like 2 weeks. probably depends on your doctor too and if they respond to edd quickly

•Your cousin got LUCKY then. The EDD reps even told me themselves they flag all out-of-state medical providers for "additional review" - it's built into their system to delay payments!!!

I'm actually going through this exact situation right now! I'm 36 weeks pregnant with a Washington doctor but working for a California company. I filed my claim 3 weeks ago and it just got approved yesterday. What helped me: I called my doctor's office billing department (not just the medical staff) ahead of time and explained the situation. They were familiar with sending certification to other states. Make sure they understand it's not just FMLA but California's specific SDI program. The claim took exactly 18 days to process compared to the usual 10-14 days, so not terrible. The EDD representative told me they have a special verification process for out-of-state providers that adds about a week to processing. Honestly, don't fly back to CA just for this - that's unnecessary stress while pregnant! Just file a few weeks before you plan to stop working to account for possible delays.

•This is so helpful to hear from someone in almost the exact same situation! I'll definitely reach out to the billing department - that's a great tip. And congratulations on your pregnancy! Wishing you a smooth delivery!

wait i'm confused, doesn't the doctor have to be in the same state as your claim?? i thought thats how it worked...

•No, that's not correct. You qualify for CA disability based on where you WORK and pay into SDI, not where your doctor is located. You can see any licensed physician, they just need to complete the California-specific forms correctly.

•oh i didnt know that! good to know

My Oregon doctor refused to fill out CA disability paperwork saying they "don't participate in out-of-state programs" so I had to scramble to find a California telemedicine provider at the last minute. So frustrating. Make sure your doctor is actually willing to do the paperwork before you count on them!

•Oh wow, I hadn't even considered that possibility! I'll definitely confirm with my doctor tomorrow that they're willing to complete the California forms. Did you end up finding a good telemedicine option that worked?

One more thing I wanted to add - when my claim was pending with my out-of-state doctor, I noticed something strange on my SDI Online account. It showed "pending medical certification verification" for much longer than normal. When I finally got through to an EDD representative, they explained that out-of-state claims go through a special review team. If your claim seems stuck, specifically ask if it's been assigned to the "out-of-state medical review team" - this is apparently a specific department that handles these cases. Knowing this terminology helped me get better answers when I called. Also, if your doctor's office has an online portal, give them access to upload the documentation directly if possible - this can speed up the verification process.

•This is so helpful! I'll make a note of that specific department name in case I need to call. I've heard EDD can be really tricky to navigate if you don't know exactly what to ask for.

•That's reassuring to hear! A week delay I can manage - it's the horror stories about month-long delays that were freaking me out.
