First-time pregnancy SDI filing - question about overlapping final paycheck
Hey everyone! I'm about to file for SDI due to my pregnancy (my doctor put me on bed rest at 32 weeks with high BP). I'm super nervous about making mistakes on my first disability claim. My last day at work was Friday, but I'll be receiving my final paycheck next week while I'm already out on disability. Do I need to report this somewhere on my SDI application? Will this affect my claim or delay my benefits? Also, any tips for first-time filers would be greatly appreciated! I've heard horror stories about claims getting rejected over silly mistakes and I'm already stressed enough with this pregnancy complication.

When I filed for pregnancy disability last August, I was in a similar situation with my final paycheck. You definitely need to report that final paycheck on your claim. There's a specific section on the application that asks about your last day worked and if you're receiving any other payments. Just make sure to list it as regular wages (not vacation/PTO) and include the exact date you'll receive it. This won't mess up your claim, but if you don't report it, EDD might think you're still working and delay processing your claim.

•Thank you so much! That's really helpful. Do you remember if they asked for an exact dollar amount of the final paycheck? I'm not 100% sure what my final check will be since I had some overtime last week.

You need to be very specific when reporting your last day worked and any income received after that date. When I filed for pregnancy disability in January, I entered my last day worked as my actual final day (not the pay period end date). Then in the section asking if you're receiving other income, select YES and choose "wages" from the dropdown. You'll need to provide the payment date and estimated amount. Make sure your doctor has submitted the medical certification form (DE 2501) correctly too - this is the #1 reason claims get delayed. If you have any questions during the application, write them down and call EDD directly before submitting. Better to get it right the first time!

•This is exactly what I needed to know! My doctor is submitting the form tomorrow, so I'll double check with them that it's filled out completely. I'm definitely going to call EDD if anything confuses me during the application.

Just wanted to add - be prepared to wait on your first payment! My pregnancy claim took 3 weeks to process even though I did everything correctly. They don't tell you this but there's a mandatory 7-day waiting period before benefits start. So even after approval you won't get paid for the first week. Budget accordingly!

•The waiting period is SO FRUSTRATING!!! I filed my claim for pregnancy disability back in November and nobody warned me about this! I was counting on that money right away and ended up having to borrow from my parents. EDD should make this more clear on their website instead of hiding it in the fine print. 😠ðŸ˜

I process payroll for a medical office and help our employees with SDI claims frequently. Here's what you need to know about that final paycheck: 1. Report your last PHYSICAL day of work correctly (sounds like last Friday) 2. In the "other income" section, report your final paycheck with the exact date you'll receive it 3. You don't need the exact amount - an estimate is fine as long as it's reasonably close Also, make sure your doctor completes their portion thoroughly. The most common mistake I see is physicians leaving the "expected duration" field blank or vague. For pregnancy disability, they should specifically state when you became disabled and your expected delivery date plus 6-8 weeks for recovery. One more tip: Save a copy of EVERYTHING. Take screenshots of your completed application before submitting it. EDD systems occasionally lose information.

•Thank you so much for the detailed advice! I'll definitely save copies of everything. My doctor mentioned I'll likely be on disability until 6 weeks after delivery, so I'll make sure that's clearly stated on the form.

Good luck trying to reach anyone at EDD if you have questions during your application! I spent DAYS trying to get through when I was filing for my pregnancy claim last month. I kept getting disconnected or stuck on hold for hours. So frustrating when you're already dealing with pregnancy issues and just need a simple answer!! I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to an actual EDD rep in about 25 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd Seriously saved my sanity during an already stressful time. The rep was able to answer all my questions about my final paycheck and how to properly report it.

•I used Claimyr too when I had issues with my medical certification form! Definitely worth it rather than spending days trying to get through on your own.

When I filed for pregancy disability last year, I messed up how I reported my last paycheck and ended up having to call EDD to fix it. It was such a headache! But one thing nobody mentioned yet - if your employer offers any paid family leave through your company (separate from state benefits), make sure you note that too. My company gave me 4 weeks partial pay during my leave and I had to report that to EDD as well so they could adjust my benefit amount.

•My company doesn't offer any additional paid leave unfortunately, but that's good information to know! Thanks for sharing your experience.

One more important tip: After your pregnancy disability claim ends (usually 6-8 weeks after delivery), you can transition to Paid Family Leave (PFL) for bonding time with your baby. This is a separate application, but you use the same EDD account. Start that application process about 2 weeks before your pregnancy disability ends to avoid gaps in payment. Many new moms don't realize they need to file a separate claim for the bonding period.

•Oh that's super helpful! I was wondering about the transition to bonding time. I'll definitely make a note to apply for PFL about 2 weeks before my disability claim ends. Really appreciate all this advice!
