Will my final IHSS check affect my CalWORKs eligibility? Just applied after losing client

I just lost my IHSS client and my hours are gonna be way reduced with my new client whenever I get assigned. Problem is I'm broke NOW and freaking out about bills. I applied for CalWORKs and CalFresh yesterday because I literally have no income coming in. Here's where I'm confused - I got my final full IHSS paycheck at the beginning of this month (like $1,850) for the hours I worked LAST month. That's how IHSS always pays, a month behind. But now I'm not working at all until they assign me a new client. Will the county count that IHSS check as income for THIS month even though it was for last month's work? If they do, will I get denied for CalWORKs? I have a 6-year-old and rent is due in 2 weeks. Has anyone dealt with this situation before when applying after losing IHSS work? I'm so stressed I can barely sleep.

OMG I went through almost the exact same thing last year!! The county is SUPPOSED to count income in the month it was received, not earned. But when I applied, they actually approved me for CalWorks with no problem even with my final IHSS check. The eligibility worker told me they look at your current situation and future income. Make sure you tell them clearly that you have NO ONGOING income and that last check was final payment for previous work. Bring proof your IHSS client assignment ended if you have something in writing.

Thank you for responding! I didn't get anything in writing that my assignment ended - my client just passed away suddenly. But I'm still on the IHSS registry waiting for a new assignment. Did they make you provide proof of no income? I'm worried about the interview because I don't know what documents to gather.

The way CalWORKs handles income can be confusing, but here's what happens in your situation: 1. They count income in the month it's received, but they also look at your "reasonably anticipated income" for future months 2. Since you no longer have that IHSS client and won't receive more payments, you should explain this during your interview 3. They may ask for verification that your IHSS employment ended - a letter, email, or even allowing them to call your IHSS office to confirm 4. If you have $0 expected income going forward, they should approve you (assuming you meet other eligibility requirements) One important thing - make sure to report your situation accurately on the SAWS 2 Plus form. There's a section where you can explain special circumstances about your income situation.

This ↑↑↑ Totally accurate. Also make sure u tell them exactly when u expect to get a new client if u have any idea about timeline. They might ask.

they gonna count that check for this month and probably deny u. thats what they did to me. said i was over income limit. had to wait til next month to apply again when i had no money coming in at all. system is rigged!!!! they dont care if ur rent is due.

That's not necessarily true - it depends on the specific situation and how the case worker evaluates it. If the OP clearly explains that this was final payment for past work and they have zero anticipated income going forward, many counties will approve the application. They should definitely apply and explain the circumstances rather than waiting another month.

When I applied for CalWORKs, I was in a similar situation where I had received a final paycheck but had no ongoing income. During my interview, I explained this clearly and showed them documentation that I was no longer employed. I was approved within 2 weeks. However, I also need to mention that calling the county to check on your application status or get questions answered can be a total nightmare. I tried for 3 days straight and kept getting disconnected or told to call back later. I finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual person at the county within 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE It was worth it because I got my questions answered immediately instead of waiting for weeks wondering what was happening with my case. Definitely helped with my stress levels!

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm definitely worried about the phone situation too - I tried calling yesterday to ask about this and gave up after being on hold for 45 minutes. I'll check out that service if I keep having trouble. Did you bring any specific documents to your interview to prove you weren't working anymore?

I process CalWORKs eligibility, and here's what you need to know about your situation: For CalWORKs, we look at income in the month received PLUS any reasonably anticipated income. You should absolutely apply now and explain that: 1. The IHSS payment received this month was for work performed last month 2. You currently have no client and no reasonably anticipated income until reassigned 3. You need immediate assistance Bring documentation showing your IHSS client relationship ended (any communication from IHSS). If you don't have documentation, ask your IHSS office for something in writing or request they be available by phone during your interview to verify. In many cases, we can approve benefits if we can verify you have no reasonably anticipated income going forward, even if you received money earlier in the month. Make sure to complete your SAR 7 form accurately when that time comes.

Thank you SO much for this detailed response! This is exactly what I needed to know. I have a text from my IHSS coordinator acknowledging my client passed and that I'm back on the waiting list. Would a screenshot of that text be enough documentation? My interview is scheduled for next week.

dont listen to ppl saying u cant get approved. depneds on ur worker. my sister got approved even tho she had income that month. but my friend got denied in same situation. its ALL about what worker u get assigned!!!! some actually want to help and others just wanna deny everyone. good luck hope u get a good 1

While individual eligibility workers may have different approaches, they all must follow the same regulations. The outcome shouldn't vary based solely on which worker you get. The regulations clearly state that reasonably anticipated income is what matters for ongoing eligibility. If someone has received income but can verify they won't continue receiving income, they should be eligible (assuming they meet other requirements like resource limits, etc.).

Update: Had my interview today and got APPROVED! The worker said exactly what some of you mentioned - they counted my IHSS income for the month I received it, but since I could prove I no longer had a client (showed the text from my coordinator), they determined I had no reasonably anticipated income going forward. I'll get my CalWORKs benefits next week and CalFresh loaded tomorrow! Such a relief. For anyone in a similar situation, definitely apply right away and clearly explain your situation. Thanks everyone for the help!

That's awesome!!! So happy for you! Make sure you keep track of your 48-month time limit though. CalWORKs only gives you 48 months of aid in your lifetime, so try to get back to work as soon as you can so you don't use up too many months. But seriously, congrats on getting approved!

Congratulations on getting approved! That's such great news and I'm sure it's a huge weight off your shoulders. Your story really shows how important it is to clearly explain your situation to the eligibility worker and bring documentation when you have it. For others reading this who might be in similar situations - this is a perfect example of why you shouldn't assume you'll be denied just because you received income earlier in the month. The system does look at your current and future circumstances, not just what happened in the past. Thanks for updating us with the positive outcome!

This is such an encouraging update! I'm new to this community but have been lurking and reading stories like yours. It's really helpful to see real outcomes like this - I was worried about applying for benefits myself because of confusing income situations. Your experience shows that being honest and upfront with documentation really does make a difference. Thanks for taking the time to update everyone with the good news!
