Where do I find my son's student loan info on FAFSA? Different login?

This may seem dumb but.... Is the loan information under my sons log in? He will be a sophomore next year and for the life of me my mind is blank. I can't remember where I saw everything last year. It's definitely not on my screen. Thanks

Not a dumb question at all! Yes, student loan information is only visible in your son's StudentAid.gov account - not in the parent's account. He'll need to log in with his own FSA ID to view his loan details, including amounts, interest rates, and servicer information. The parent view only shows your contribution info and Parent PLUS loans if you have those.

Thank you!! That's what I thought but after staring at my account for 20 mins I was second guessing myself. Now I have to figure out what his login info is... he's away at school and doesn't answer his texts half the time 🙄

EVERYTHING about FAFSA is confusing!!! They seriously need to make it more user friendly. I've been doing this for 3 years with my twins and I still get lost.

To add to what others have said - there are actually three different places you might need to look for complete loan info: 1. Your son's StudentAid.gov account (shows all federal loans, grants) 2. His school's financial aid portal (sometimes shows different/additional details) 3. The loan servicer's website (where payments will eventually be made) If you need to help him check but he's not responding, you might want to set up an authorized user access on his account. He'll need to add you though - there's a specific process for it in the settings.

Oh wow, I didn't realize there were multiple places! The school portal is something I can actually access (thankfully). Is the loan servicer info shown in his StudentAid account? I'm trying to plan ahead for when he graduates.

If you're trying to reach someone at FSA about this, good luck!! I spent 2 hours on hold last week trying to get help with a similar issue. By the time I got through, the representative couldn't even help me because the system was down. So frustrating!

Try using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - it saved me so much time when I needed to talk to someone at Federal Student Aid. They hold your place in line and call you when an agent is available. They have a video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. Totally worth it when you need to sort out these access issues!

I'm going through this with my 3rd kid now. Quick tip - take screenshots of EVERYTHING and save passwords in a secure place. I learned this the hard way. Also, your son should be able to reset his password by email if he's forgotten it. Just have him check his spam folder because FSA emails often end up there.

That's a great idea about screenshots! I'll definitely do that once we get in. He's terrible about keeping track of passwords so I'm going to set him up with a password manager before he graduates.

The SAI (Student Aid Index) is visible in both accounts actually! It's one of the few pieces of information that appears in both the parent and student view. If you're not seeing it in your parent account, it might be because the FAFSA hasn't been fully processed yet. The SAI typically appears within 3-5 days after the application is complete.

Going back to your original question - another option is to have your son request his aid summary directly from Federal Student Aid and share it with you. He can download a PDF from his account that shows all federal loans and grants. This way, you don't need his login information, and you'll have documentation you can keep for your records. Much easier than trying to remember multiple logins!

Perfect! I'll have him do that. I'm actually meeting him for lunch this weekend so I'll make him sit down and show me everything while we're together. Thanks for all the help everyone!

Just wanted to add - if you're planning to help with loan management after graduation, consider having your son set up a third-party authorization with his loan servicer now while he's still in school. This lets you access payment info and make payments on his behalf without needing his login credentials. Each servicer has their own process, but it's much easier to set up before the loans go into repayment. Learned this with my older daughter and it saved so much hassle later!
