Missing SSN/tax ID entry in FAFSA - did we skip a crucial section?

I'm completely confused about the FAFSA SSN/tax ID requirements. My daughter started her 2025-2026 FAFSA as the student and then sent me an invitation to complete the parent portion. I finished everything it asked me to do, and the system says I'm done. But here's what's weird - neither of us was ever prompted to enter our Social Security Numbers or tax ID numbers! I don't see them anywhere in the application review section either. Isn't this information required? Did we somehow skip past a crucial section? The confirmation page says we completed everything, but I'm worried our application will be rejected without the tax IDs. Has anyone else experienced this? Should I just assume our SSNs are automatically pulled from somewhere else in the system?

The new FAFSA system (for 2025-2026) now pulls your SSN/tax information directly through the FSA ID verification process. When you and your daughter created your FSA IDs, you each had to verify your identity with your SSN at that point. The system now uses that information instead of making you enter it again on the actual FAFSA form. This is part of the changes to streamline the process and reduce errors. As long as both you and your daughter have verified FSA IDs linked to your FAFSA application, your SSNs are already in the system.

Thank you so much! That makes sense now. We did create FSA IDs before starting. I guess I was expecting the application to look like previous years where we had to manually enter everything. Does this mean the system will also automatically pull our tax information from the IRS if we selected that option?

OMG I had the EXACT same worry last month!!! i kept looking for where to enter the ssn and got so stressed thinking i messed up the whole thing. turns out its fine, they already have it from when u make the fsa id. one less thing to worry about i guess lol

That's a relief to hear someone else had the same concern! I was panicking that we'd have to start all over again. The new system is so different from when my older son applied a few years ago.

The redesigned FAFSA simplified several aspects of the application process. Here's what's happening with SSNs/tax IDs: 1. When you created your FSA ID, you verified your SSN with the Social Security Administration 2. The FSA ID is now directly linked to your SSN and personal information 3. When you log in with your FSA ID to complete the FAFSA, the system already knows your SSN 4. The same applies to your daughter with her FSA ID This is intentional to reduce data entry errors and streamline the process. Your SSNs are definitely in the system - no need to worry about that part! Make sure you opted into the IRS Data Retrieval Tool if you wanted your tax information automatically imported as well.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. That definitely eases my concerns. We did select the option to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, so hopefully that information transferred correctly as well. This new system is certainly different, but I can see how it could be more efficient once you understand how it works.

i think they changed it cuz so many people kept typing their ssn wrong and then their applications got rejected. my cousins fafsa got delayed for like 2 months last year cuz she typed one digit wrong in her ssn and didn't notice. its actually better this way imo

I HATE THE NEW SYSTEM!!! They say it's "streamlined" but it's just CONFUSING!!! I've been helping my son with his FAFSA and NOTHING works right. First the website crashed 6 times, then we couldn't link accounts, then we couldn't tell what information was actually submitted. If you're worried about your SSN not being there, CALL THEM DIRECTLY to confirm! But good luck getting through - I've been on hold for 3+ hours multiple times this month!

I've been having the same frustrations with the phone lines. If you want to actually speak to someone at Federal Student Aid without the insane wait times, try using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They have a system that holds your place in line and calls you back when an agent is available. Saved me hours of waiting when I had issues with my daughter's SAI calculation. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. It really helped when I was desperate to get verification issues resolved before deadlines.

did u check the confirmation page where it has the summary? sometimes it shows the last 4 digits of ssn there. also make sure both ur fsa id and ur daughters fsa id are properly linked to the application. not sure if this helps but worth checking

Good suggestion - I just checked the confirmation page again and it does show the last 4 digits of both our SSNs in the summary section, so that's reassuring. And yes, it shows both our FSA IDs are linked properly. That makes me feel better about the whole thing.

Yes, we added all her school codes during her part of the application. That was actually one of the few parts that felt familiar from the old system! Thanks for checking though.

If your confirmation page shows the last 4 digits of both SSNs and indicates completion, you should be all set. Just make sure you both signed the FAFSA with your FSA IDs at the end. One last tip - save a PDF copy of your confirmation page for your records. You'll need your SAI score once it's calculated, which should happen within 3-5 business days if there are no verification issues.

Great advice about saving the PDF - just did that. And yes, we both digitally signed with our FSA IDs at the end. I'll be watching for the SAI score to come through. Thanks again for all the helpful information!

I just went through this same process with my son last month and had the exact same panic! The new FAFSA system definitely takes some getting used to. One thing that helped ease my mind was logging back into both our FSA ID accounts and checking that our profiles showed our SSNs were verified - you can see a green checkmark next to "Identity Verified" in your account dashboard. Also, if you're still worried, you can always check your Student Aid Report (SAR) once it's processed in a few days - it will show your SSNs are properly linked. The system really is more secure this way, even though it feels weird not manually entering that critical info like we used to!

That's such a good tip about checking the FSA ID dashboard for the green checkmark! I just logged in and confirmed both our accounts show "Identity Verified" with the green checkmark. It's reassuring to know there's a way to double-check that everything is properly linked. You're right that it does feel strange not entering the SSN manually - I kept second-guessing myself thinking we missed something important. Thanks for mentioning the Student Aid Report too - I'll definitely keep an eye out for that to arrive in the next few days for final peace of mind.
