How to predict if my FAFSA will be approved after submission tracking shows 'Processing'?

So I submitted my FAFSA on June 11 and got the confirmation that it was received. The studentaid.gov portal shows it's been 'processing' for 5 days now. I'm freaking out because I really need this financial aid to attend college this fall! The tracking shows: - Form Started (May 29) - Form Submitted (June 11) - says 'Your application was received and is being processed now. It may take one to three days to finalize the form...' - Form Processed (still waiting) It's already been longer than the 1-3 days they mentioned! How do I know if my application will eventually be approved? Are there signs I should look for in my account? I'm so stressed because my whole future depends on this!

There's no way to know 100% if you'll be approved until your SAI (Student Aid Index) is calculated. The processing time they give is just an estimate - mine took 5 days last year. As long as you don't get a verification notice, you're probably fine. Just keep checking your email and the portal daily.

Thanks for the response! What exactly is verification? Is that when they reject you?

Processing time isn't approval time - they're different things. FAFSA processes your form to calculate your SAI (Student Aid Index), but schools decide your actual aid package. Processing just means they're reviewing your information for completeness and accuracy. Once processed, schools receive your information and determine what aid you qualify for. Watch for these statuses: - "Processing" - normal, just wait - "Action Required" - you need to fix something - "Processed Successfully" - good news, your SAI is calculated After that, watch for communications from your schools about your financial aid package.

Oh that makes so much more sense! So the FAFSA isn't approved or denied - it just gets processed and sent to schools? And then the schools decide? That's a huge relief.

It's important to understand that FAFSA itself isn't really "approved" or "denied" in the way you're thinking. It's a form that collects your financial information to calculate your Student Aid Index (SAI). What happens after processing: 1. Your SAI is calculated 2. Your information is sent to schools you listed 3. Schools use your SAI to build a financial aid package 4. Schools send you award letters with aid offers The only "denial" that might happen is if there are errors in your submission or if you're selected for verification (extra documentation). Processing delays are common, especially during peak periods. It might take 5-7 days instead of the estimated 1-3 days.

Thank you - I had no idea how the system worked! So once my status changes to "Form Processed" then I'll know my information was accepted? And then I just wait to hear from my schools?

Exactly! Once it shows "Form Processed" you'll be able to see your SAI number in your account. That means your information was successfully processed and is being sent to your selected schools. Then it's just a waiting game to hear from each school about your specific aid package.

That's exactly what I've been doing! I've been calling their number for days and I'm always on hold forever until I give up!

I had to deal with this last month - the FAFSA hotline is basically useless right now with all the changes to the system. After trying for days, I started using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual agent in about 15 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent told me processing times are longer than normal right now because of the new FAFSA system, and that as long as my status didn't show any errors, I should just wait. Sure enough, mine processed a few days later.

It worked for me - basically connects you directly to the next available agent instead of putting you in the general queue. The agent I spoke with was super helpful and confirmed my application was actually fine, just in the processing backlog.

Thanks for the tip! If my status doesn't change by tomorrow I might try this. I'm just so anxious about making sure everything went through correctly.

When I submitted my FAFSA in March, my application got stuck in processing for TWO WEEKS! I was panicking the whole time. Turns out they were having system updates and didn't bother telling anyone. TYPICAL GOVERNMENT EFFICIENCY!! In the end, everything processed fine and I got my aid package from my school about 3 weeks later. The whole system is so unnecessarily stressful and poorly communicated.

Oh no, two weeks sounds horrible! At least your story gives me hope that even with delays, it can still work out in the end.

Just to clarify an important point - once your FAFSA is processed, what you'll see is your SAI (Student Aid Index), which replaced the old EFC. This is just a number that schools use to determine your aid eligibility. A lower SAI means you're eligible for more need-based aid. Don't panic if your SAI seems high - each school has different formulas for awarding aid, and you might still qualify for merit scholarships, work-study, and federal loans regardless of your SAI. The schools will put together financial aid packages based on their own budgets and your information.

Thank you for explaining this! I was so confused about what happens after processing. Once I get my SAI, how long does it typically take for schools to send their aid packages?

It varies by school, but typically anywhere from 2-6 weeks after they receive your FAFSA information. Some schools are faster than others. You can always contact your schools' financial aid offices directly to check on the status once your FAFSA shows as processed.

Update us when your status changes! I'm curious how long it ends up taking with the new FAFSA system. My sister is applying next month, so I'm trying to gather real experiences to set her expectations.

Just checked this morning and it FINALLY changed to "Form Processed"! So it took exactly 7 days from submission to processing. Now waiting to see my SAI and hear from schools. Tell your sister to be patient - it definitely takes longer than they say on the website!
