FAFSA system won't let me correct student asset reporting error - stuck in glitch loop
I'm seriously about to throw my laptop out the window! I submitted our FAFSA about 3 weeks ago and noticed I made a dumb error - listed some stocks under my name instead of my daughter's. I logged in to make the correction and the system keeps freezing up or giving me error messages when I try to save the change. I've tried at least 8 times over the past week! The worst part is, we're way over the income threshold for aid anyway (combined household income ~$215K), so this correction won't even change our aid eligibility. Now I'm stuck with a FAFSA that shows 'processing' but won't let me update it. Has anyone else dealt with the correction system glitching? Is there a special number to call to get actual help with technical issues? The standard support line just keeps disconnecting me after 20+ minutes on hold.

•Just tried with Firefox, Chrome, AND Edge. Same error message each time: "We're sorry, but we cannot process your correction at this time." It's driving me crazy!

If it makes you feel any better, you're right that it won't matter for aid purposes. Asset corrections typically don't affect your SAI calculation much unless they're MASSIVE changes. The income threshold is the bigger factor. That said, you're still correct to want it fixed - FAFSA verification can flag discrepancies between reported assets and tax returns, even when it doesn't affect aid eligibility. Try this: instead of using the correction feature, try submitting a brand new FAFSA with all the correct information. Sometimes that's actually faster than fighting with the correction system.

•Wouldn't submitting a new application cause more problems? I'm worried they'd flag us for having duplicate applications in the system. The college has already downloaded our current FAFSA data...

•Good concern. In that case, you might need to reach the FSA directly to resolve the technical glitch. The schools can also make certain corrections on their end after they receive your FAFSA, so you could contact the financial aid office at your daughter's school to explain the situation.

The exact same thing happened to me last year! I was trying to move some mutual funds from me to my son and the system kept freezing. I spent WEEKS trying to fix it and eventually gave up since we don't qualify for need-based aid either. Honestly, unless your daughter is applying for merit scholarships that require the FAFSA to be 100% accurate, it's probably not worth the headache.

•That's somewhat reassuring I'm not alone. Did you ever hear anything from the college or federal aid office about the discrepancy? I'm worried it will delay her being able to accept her merit scholarship or cause verification issues.

•We never heard anything about it. The school didn't seem to care since our SAI was so high anyway. My son got his merit scholarship with no issues. The FAFSA was just a box to check in the process.

I work in a financial aid office. Here's what's happening: The FAFSA correction system is undergoing maintenance windows that aren't always announced. That's likely why you're experiencing the glitch. Since you mentioned your household income is around $215K, you're correct that this asset correction won't impact your aid eligibility. From a practical standpoint, you have three options: 1. Wait about 7-10 days for the maintenance to complete and try again 2. Submit documentation about the correction directly to your daughter's school's financial aid office 3. Leave it as is, since it won't impact the SAI (aid calculation) in a meaningful way In your specific situation, option 2 or 3 is probably best. The verification process typically focuses on income, not assets, especially when the income already disqualifies you from need-based aid.

•Thank you! That explanation about maintenance windows makes so much sense. I'll email her school's financial aid office with the correction details. I appreciate having actual information instead of just the frustrating error messages!

I had the EXACT same problem with the FAFSA correction system last month - it was a complete nightmare. After trying everything (different browsers, clearing cache, waiting days between attempts), I finally got through to an actual FSA agent who fixed it on their end in about 5 minutes. I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to a real person without waiting on hold forever. They connected me directly to an agent who had access to override the glitch. You can see how it works in their demo video: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ It was so worth it after wasting hours trying to fix it myself. The agent told me they were dealing with lots of similar tech issues because of system updates.

•Thank you! I'll check it out. At this point I'd try anything to get this resolved.

I HATE THE FAFSA SO MUCH!!! THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO BE CONFUSING AND FRUSTRATING! Why can't they just make a system that works?!?! I spent THREE HOURS on hold last week trying to fix an error with my son's application. THREE HOURS!!! And then they disconnected me. The government obviously doesn't care about making this easy for parents. It's just obstacle after obstacle. My advice? Document EVERYTHING. Take screenshots of all error messages. Note dates and times of your attempts. Write down names of any representatives you speak with. You'll need this paper trail when inevitably something else goes wrong.

•While the frustration is understandable, most of these issues stem from the major system overhaul implementing the FAFSA Simplification Act. The new system is actually designed to be easier, but the transition has created temporary technical challenges. Things should improve significantly for the 2026-2027 application cycle.

Maybe call the school financial aid office? My daughter's college was super helpful when we had issues with our FAFSA last year. They said they could annotate the file on their end with the correction so it wouldn't cause problems later. Worth a try!

•That's a good suggestion - I'll call the school tomorrow. Thanks!

Update on my earlier comment: Just want to clarify that while contacting the school is helpful, they can't actually modify asset information in the FAFSA system themselves. What they can do is document the correct information in their system and prevent it from triggering verification issues. For true corrections to the FAFSA record itself, you'll need to either: 1. Successfully submit the correction when the system is working properly 2. Have an FSA agent make the change directly (which requires reaching them by phone) Either way, since you're well above the need-based aid thresholds, this is more about accuracy of records than any impact on financial aid amounts.

•I appreciate the clarification. I managed to get through to an FSA agent who fixed the issue on their end. You were right that it didn't affect our SAI calculation at all, but it feels good having everything accurate in the system.

Glad to hear you got it resolved! For anyone else dealing with similar FAFSA correction glitches, here's what I learned from my experience last year: The system seems to have "peak error times" - usually weekends and evenings when traffic is highest. I had better luck making corrections during weekday mornings (9-11 AM EST). Also, if you're getting the "cannot process your correction" error, try logging out completely, clearing your browser cache, and waiting at least 30 minutes before trying again. Sometimes the system needs time to "forget" your previous failed attempts. The FSA agents are definitely your best bet for technical issues that won't resolve on their own.

•This is really helpful timing advice! I wish I had known about those peak error times earlier - I was definitely trying most of my attempts on weekend evenings when my daughter and I had time to sit down together. The 30-minute waiting period tip makes sense too, since it felt like the system was "remembering" my failed attempts and immediately erroring out. Thanks for sharing what worked for you!

I'm dealing with a similar FAFSA correction nightmare right now! My situation is slightly different - I need to correct my parent contribution information after realizing I miscalculated some retirement account distributions. Like you, the correction system keeps giving me error messages and timing out. Reading through all these responses is so helpful. I'm definitely going to try the weekday morning approach that Ella mentioned, and if that doesn't work, I'll contact our school's financial aid office directly. It's reassuring to know that these technical glitches are fairly common and that there are actual solutions. Thanks for posting about this - sometimes it helps just knowing you're not the only one fighting with the system!
