FAFSA submission error - can't edit after submitting taxes same day?
I'm totally lost with the FAFSA system right now! I submitted my application yesterday thinking I was doing everything right, but realized I did it WITHOUT my tax information. Then I got my taxes processed the SAME DAY and now I don't know how to update my FAFSA with the correct information! I keep looking for an edit button or delete option but can't find anything. I've only been in the US for a year and have no family or friends who understand this system. Will my financial aid be rejected because the tax info wasn't included initially? How do I fix this without starting completely over?

•Thank you! Is the correction button on the main page? I've been looking everywhere but the website is so confusing to navigate.

You'll need to submit a correction to your FAFSA. Here's how: 1. Log into studentaid.gov with your FSA ID 2. From your dashboard, find your submitted FAFSA application 3. Look for the option that says "Make FAFSA Correction" 4. Navigate to the financial information section 5. Update with your new tax information 6. Submit the corrected form Your SAI (Student Aid Index) will be recalculated with the new information. Don't worry - corrections are very common and you won't be penalized for submitting an update this quickly after your initial application.

•Thank you so much for the detailed steps! Will they still process my FAFSA on time if I make these corrections now? The deadline is coming up and I'm so worried I might lose my chance at financial aid.

•Omg I will definitely double check for that final submit button! Did you have any issues with your financial aid after making the correction?

This is a very common situation with FAFSA applications, especially for first-time filers. The correction process is straightforward but I can understand it being confusing for someone new to the system. One thing to note: when you submit the correction, your application date doesn't change - it keeps the original submission date for deadline purposes. So as long as your initial submission was before the deadline, you're fine. Also, after submitting your correction, give the system 3-5 business days to reprocess your application and update your SAI calculation. Your school won't receive the updated information until this reprocessing is complete.

•Thank you for explaining about the deadline! That was my biggest worry. Should I contact my school's financial aid office to let them know I'm submitting a correction?

The whole FAFSA system is DESIGNED to be confusing!!!! I went through this EXACT situation and spent DAYS trying to talk to someone at Federal Student Aid. Kept getting disconnected or waiting for hours!!! The correction option is hard to find on purpose - they hide it under "..." or in a dropdown menu somewhere on your dashboard. They WANT people to make mistakes so fewer people get aid!

I had the exact same issue last month trying to reach someone at Federal Student Aid about correcting my tax information. After getting disconnected three times, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that holds your place in the phone queue and calls you back when an agent is available. Saved me literally hours of hold time. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ that shows how it works. Might be worth trying if you need to actually speak with someone at FSA to resolve this.

•Oh wow, I didn't know something like that existed! I might need this if I can't figure out the correction process. Thanks for the suggestion!

To follow up on your question about contacting your school - yes, it's a good idea to send a quick email to your financial aid office letting them know you've submitted a correction. This puts it on their radar, but there's nothing they need to do until the corrected FAFSA is processed by Federal Student Aid. Regarding your correction, make sure you're using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool if possible when updating your tax information. It's much more accurate than manual entry and reduces your chances of being selected for verification.

•Thank you for the follow-up advice! I'll email my financial aid office right away. I didn't know about the IRS Data Retrieval Tool - that sounds much easier than manually entering everything!

hey not to hijack but my situation is kinda similar - do u have to do this correction thing even if you used the IRS data retrieval tool? i did that on mine last week but idk if it actually worked

•If you successfully used the IRS Data Retrieval Tool and submitted your FAFSA, you shouldn't need to make a correction specifically for tax information. You can verify if it worked by viewing your processed FAFSA - your tax information sections will show "Transferred from the IRS" instead of the actual values if the tool worked properly.

UPDATE: I found the correction option! It was under the three dots menu on my dashboard just like someone mentioned. I'm going through the process now and using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. Thank you all SO MUCH for your help! This community has been incredibly supportive when I had nobody else to turn to. I'll update again once my correction is processed to let others know how long it took.
