FAFSA submission confirmed but no SAI after 8 days - normal waiting time?

Just submitted my daughter's 2025-2026 FAFSA last Tuesday, got the submission confirmation email, but still haven't received our SAI calculation. The website said processing would take 1-3 business days, but it's been over a week now and the status still shows 'Processing' when I log in. Starting to get nervous since her college priority deadline is coming up soon. Is anyone else experiencing delays right now? Should I be concerned or is this normal waiting time with the new system?

Same boat here!!! Submitted my FAFSA TWO WEEKS ago and still stuck on processing. Called the Federal Student Aid number three times and couldn't get through to anyone - just the automated system telling me to "check back later" 🙄 This new system is a disaster honestly.

Two weeks?! That's really concerning. Did you try emailing them instead of calling? I'm wondering if there's a system-wide backup or if our applications got flagged for some reason.

There are definitely longer processing times this cycle. The new FAFSA system is actually calculating SAI scores in batches rather than immediately. 7-10 business days is becoming more standard, though officially they still say 1-3 days. As long as you received the submission confirmation email, your application is in their system. Keep checking your studentaid.gov account daily and also check your email spam folder regularly in case the results notification gets filtered.

Thank you so much for this info! That's a relief to hear. The confirmation email did come through right away, so I'll just keep monitoring both the portal and my email. Do you know if colleges can see that we've submitted while it's still processing?

Yes, colleges can see that you've submitted your FAFSA even while it's processing. They won't be able to download your actual information until the SAI calculation is complete, but they can verify that you've submitted by the priority deadline. Just make sure you added all your daughter's potential schools to the FAFSA during submission.

lol everyone panicing... this happens EVERY year with fafsa... just wait it out. my sons took 12 days last year and everything was fine. they will email you when its ready

Thanks for the perspective. This is our first time applying so I wasn't sure what's normal. Good to hear your son's situation worked out fine last year even with the delay.

Just to add some clarity - the new FAFSA system this year has completely different processing procedures than previous years. The Student Aid Index calculation is more complex now and involves additional verification steps on the backend. If you're worried about meeting school deadlines, you can contact your daughter's financial aid office directly. Most schools understand the FAFSA delays this cycle and are being flexible with their internal deadlines as long as you can prove you submitted on time (your confirmation email is that proof). If it goes beyond 14 business days, then you should definitely try contacting Federal Student Aid directly.

That's really helpful context. I didn't realize they had completely changed the backend processing. I'll give it another week before getting too concerned then. Her first choice school has a Feb 15 priority deadline, so we should still be okay.

I had this EXACT problem last month! I tried calling FSA for days and kept getting disconnected or waiting for hours. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual human at Federal Student Aid. They have this service where they wait on hold for you and then call you when a real person is on the line. Saved me so much frustration! You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ Turns out my application was stuck because my daughter's Social Security number had a typo. The agent fixed it right away and we got our SAI calculation two days later.

This sounds super sketchy. Why would you need a third party service to talk to a government agency?? Just keep calling and you'll get through eventually.

Not sketchy at all - it's just a service that waits on hold for you instead of you having to listen to the hold music for hours. You still talk directly to the FSA agents yourself. I spent 3 days trying to get through before using it. Just sharing what worked for me! 🤷‍♀️

I might try this if it goes much longer. I've already tried calling twice and got disconnected both times after waiting 45+ minutes. Would be nice to not waste hours on hold.

I think theres a lot of missinformation here. The REAL truth is that FAFSA is totally backlogged because of the new system rollout. My daughter submitted in DECEMBER and we just got the SAI last week!!! Some applications get processed faster than others and no one knows why. Its like playing the lottery. My advice - if your daughter has high-priority schools, call those financial aid offices directly and explain the situation. Many schools are now working with students who have FAFSA delays. Some will even accept screenshots of your submission confirmation as proof you applied on time.

December to late January is a really long wait! That's concerning. I'll definitely reach out to her top choice schools to let them know we've submitted but are waiting on processing. Thanks for the suggestion.

Exactly!!!! I tried telling people the system is broken but no one believes me. My cousin works in a financial aid office and she says they're getting HUNDREDS of calls about FAFSA delays. The whole thing is a mess this year.

Just wanted to follow up and mention that checking your status obsessively won't make it process any faster. The system doesn't work that way. Once you submit, it enters a processing queue and checking the status doesn't move you up in line. One thing that might be useful is to verify that your daughter's Student Aid Account is properly linked to your Parent FAFSA Account. Sometimes processing delays happen when the system has trouble matching the accounts. If you log into studentaid.gov, go to the account settings and check if the parent-student link shows as verified. If it shows pending or has any warnings, that could explain the delay.

I hadn't thought to check the account linkage - that's a great suggestion. I just logged in and confirmed our accounts do show as properly linked with no warnings, so at least that's not the issue. I guess we just need to be patient a bit longer.

Sorry for jumping in late, but I wanted to ask - did you use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool when filling out the income section? Applications that use the DRT tend to process faster because the income data is pre-verified. If you manually entered tax info, that could be causing the delay as they have to verify everything manually.

Yes, we did use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool - that part went smoothly and pulled all our tax information correctly. That's partly why I was expecting faster processing. I'm now wondering if maybe we hit a glitch somewhere else in the application that's causing the holdup.
