FAFSA rejecting spouse's SSN/birthdate - how to verify info in parent profiles?

I'm in the middle of helping my son with his 2025-2026 FAFSA application and we've hit a roadblock. My son started the application and sent me (his dad) an invitation link. I was able to create my account and start entering our financial information, but we're completely stuck where I need to enter my wife's information. The system keeps giving an error saying her name, birthdate, or SSN is incorrect no matter what we try. We've triple-checked everything and I KNOW we're entering it correctly! I've tried to log into my wife's FSA ID account to see how her information is recorded in the system, but I can't find anywhere in her profile that shows exactly how her name/DOB/SSN is formatted in their database. Has anyone else encountered this mismatch problem with contributor information? Any suggestions on how to resolve this? Our priority date for his university is coming up fast and I'm getting really worried we'll miss the deadline.

omg YES this happened to us too last week!! so frustrating. the problem was my husband had legally changed his name years ago but the SSA database still had his birth name. we had to call the FSA helpline like 5 times before someone actually figured it out. keep trying different variations of her name maybe? like maiden name or with/without middle initial?

Thank you! My wife has never changed her name, but I'll try with and without her middle name. Maybe there's a typo in their system somewhere. Did you eventually get it resolved by phone or did you have to submit documentation?

This is a common issue with the new FAFSA system. The problem is that the Department of Education is pulling information directly from Social Security Administration records, and if there's ANY discrepancy between how your wife's name appears in SSA records versus how you're entering it, the system will reject it. Here are the most common fixes: 1. Try entering her legal name EXACTLY as it appears on her Social Security card 2. Make sure there are no spaces after names or initials 3. Try with and without her middle name/initial 4. If she has a hyphenated name, try different variations 5. Check if her birthdate might be incorrect in the SSA database If none of these work, your wife should log into her own FSA ID account and check her profile information under "Personal Information." She may need to verify her information directly with the Social Security Administration if there are discrepancies.

This is very helpful, thank you. We've tried most of these variations but I'll double check her Social Security card tonight. The weird thing is that she's never had issues with her info before on previous FAFSAs for our older kids. Is there a specific section in her FSA ID account where we can view exactly how her name is formatted in their system? We've looked everywhere in her profile settings but can't find it.

While starting over might help with some technical glitches, this particular issue is likely due to a data mismatch between what's being entered and what's in the federal database. The FAFSA system is now doing real-time verification with the Social Security Administration database as you enter information, which is why it's rejecting the spouse information. Browser changes typically won't resolve verification mismatches - this requires ensuring the exact information format matches what's on file with SSA.

I worked through EXACLTY this problem last month! It was driving me CRAZY!!! Turns out the issue was that my husband's account had my birth date wrong by ONE DAY. He was putting in 03/12 when my birthday is actually 03/13. Check all the numbers in the birthdate too - year, day, everything. It's usually something super simple that you're overlooking. Also, make sure you're not confusing contributor 1 and contributor 2 fields - that messed us up at first.

Thank you for sharing your experience! We'll double check all the numbers again tonight. The frustrating part is that we've filled out FAFSA forms for years with our older kids without any issues. Something about this new system seems much pickier about exact matches.

If you keep having trouble after trying all the suggestions here, I had success using Claimyr to get through to an actual FSA agent on the phone. I was stuck in the same situation with my spouse's info being rejected, spent days trying different variations, then finally reached a live person who could see exactly what was in their system and fix it in minutes. There's a quick video demo at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ that shows how it works. It connected me to an agent in about 20 minutes when I had been trying for days on my own. The agent was able to see that my wife's middle name was abbreviated in their system but we were entering it in full.

Thanks for the suggestion! I've been trying to call FSA directly but keep getting disconnected after waiting on hold. I'll check out that service if we can't resolve it tonight. At this point, I'll try anything to get this application submitted before our deadline.

Based on my experience working with families on FAFSA issues, there's another possibility to consider. The new FAFSA for 2025-2026 is extremely particular about the order of contributors. If your son initially listed you as Contributor 1 and your wife as Contributor 2, but then sent the invitation to you implying you're Contributor 1, there could be a mismatch in how the system is processing the information. Try having your son log back into the student portion and verify which parent is listed as which contributor number. Sometimes simply swapping the contributor order resolves these verification errors.

That's a really interesting point I hadn't considered. I'll have my son check the contributor order on his end. We did have some confusion early on about who should be listed first, so maybe that's affecting things. Thank you for this suggestion!

UPDATE: We figured it out! For anyone facing this issue in the future - the problem was incredibly simple but impossible to guess. My wife's middle name was entered as "Marie" on her Social Security card, but in the FSA ID system it was recorded as just "M" (initial only). Once we tried that variation, everything went through perfectly. Thank you everyone for your suggestions! Special thanks to the person who recommended checking against her SS card formatting - that's what led us to the solution.

I'm so glad you resolved it! This is one of the most common issues with the new FAFSA system. For future reference, once your family's information is correctly established in the system, subsequent submissions (like for your younger children or renewals) should go through more smoothly since the system will remember the verified format of your information. I recommend documenting exactly how everyone's information was accepted so you'll have it for next year.

Great job troubleshooting this! Your experience highlights exactly why the new FAFSA system can be so frustrating - these minor formatting differences that worked fine in previous years now cause major roadblocks. The fact that your wife's middle name was stored as just "M" instead of "Marie" in the FSA database is a perfect example of how picky the real-time verification has become. I'd definitely recommend that other families screenshot or write down the exact format that works once they get through, because you'll need that same formatting for renewals and any future children going through the process. Thanks for posting the solution - this will help so many other parents who run into the same issue!

This is such a valuable lesson for all of us dealing with the new FAFSA system! As someone who's new to this process, I really appreciate you sharing the solution. It's frustrating that such a small detail can cause so much stress, especially when deadlines are approaching. I'm going to make sure to have my spouse's Social Security card handy when we start our application so we can try different name format variations right from the start. Did you find that once you got past this hurdle, the rest of the financial information section went smoothly?
