FAFSA login error message for student - did 2025-2026 order change for parent/student access?
My daughter keeps getting a weird error message when trying to log into her FAFSA account for the 2025-2026 application. The screen just freezes after she enters her FSA ID and password, then times out with some technical error code. Last year for the 2024-2025 FAFSA, she HAD to create her account and start the application before I could even access it as a parent contributor. Is the process different this year? Do parents need to initiate now? The StudentAid.gov website isn't clear about the order, and after 4 attempts, she's getting frustrated. Anyone else dealing with this or know the correct login sequence for the new FAFSA?

•Did you figure out if parents or students need to start it first? That's what I'm trying to understand - if they changed the order from last year.

The process is still the same for 2025-2026 FAFSA - the student needs to create and initiate the application first, then add contributors (parents). The error your daughter is experiencing is likely due to the high traffic volume on the site right now or possibly browser compatibility issues. Try these troubleshooting steps: 1. Clear cache and cookies 2. Try a different browser (Chrome works best with StudentAid.gov) 3. Try during off-peak hours (early morning or late evening) 4. Make sure she's using the correct FSA ID credentials If she keeps getting error messages, she might need to contact FSA directly to check if there's an issue with her account. The correct application flow still requires the student to start the process.

•This is good advice but sometimes the site is just plain broken lol! My son tried for THREE DAYS straight with different browsers and times before he finally got in.

I work in a financial aid office, and we've been seeing this issue frequently with the 2025-2026 FAFSA. There's a specific browser compatibility problem that's causing login freezes. Your daughter should: 1. Use Google Chrome in incognito mode 2. Make sure all browser extensions are disabled 3. Try logging in between 5-7am ET when server load is lowest And yes, the student MUST still initiate the application first before parent contributors can access it. This order hasn't changed. If she gets locked out after multiple attempts, she may need to wait 30 minutes before trying again as there's an automatic temporary security lock after several failed login attempts.

•Thank you! This is super helpful. I'll have her try Chrome incognito mode tonight. Good to know the process order hasn't changed at least.

I had the WORST time trying to login for my daughter's FAFSA last week! I spent HOURS trying different things and getting nowhere!!! Finally I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual person at Federal Student Aid. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent I got connected with was able to reset something on the backend of my daughter's account and then it worked! Apparently there's some glitch affecting certain accounts that requires manual intervention. Saved me days of frustration!

•It's just a call service that holds your place in line. After trying to get through for 3 days myself, it was worth it to me. The FSA person fixed my daughter's account immediately once I actually got through to someone.

•Creating a new FSA ID seems extreme, but I'll keep it as a last resort option. Did your son have to provide all his identity verification docs again with the new ID?

I experienced the exact same issue with my son's application! The error kept happening on his laptop, but when he tried on his phone using mobile data (not WiFi), it worked immediately. Something about the network connection was causing the issue. Worth a try before going through the hassle of creating a new FSA ID or waiting forever on hold. And yes, for 2025-2026 FAFSA, the student still needs to initiate the application before parent contributors can be added and complete their portion. This process hasn't changed from previous years.

•That's a great suggestion about trying mobile data instead of WiFi. We'll definitely try that approach too. Thanks for confirming the process order!

Have u tried logging in super early in the morning? My daughters FAFSA wouldn't work for days but then she tried at like 5:30am and got right in! Think its just when the site isnt busy

Coming back to this thread - there was an official announcement from Federal Student Aid yesterday about intermittent login issues affecting some users. They're implementing a fix this weekend. If your daughter still can't access her account by Monday, definitely contact them directly as her account might need individual attention. Remember that the 2025-2026 FAFSA priority deadline for many colleges is coming up in March, so you'll want to resolve this soon!

•Thanks for the update! I'll have her try again after their weekend maintenance. If that doesn't work, we'll definitely reach out to them directly. Really appreciate everyone's help with this!

I'm dealing with the exact same issue! My daughter has been trying to log into her 2025-2026 FAFSA for over a week now and keeps getting timeout errors. We've tried different browsers, clearing cache, and logging in at different times of day but nothing works. It's so frustrating because the deadline is approaching and we can't even get past the login screen. Has anyone found a reliable solution that actually works? The StudentAid.gov help page is basically useless and just tells you to "try again later.
