Delay in receiving FAFSA parent email invitation - normal or system issue?

OK so I'm dealing with two FAFSA applications this year (twins in high school) and I'm confused about the parent invitation email timing. My daughter completed her FAFSA section last Tuesday, and I got the email to contribute my info within like 2 hours. But my son finished his part three days ago, and I still haven't received ANY email to complete my section of his FAFSA. Is this normal? Do the emails sometimes take longer to send out? I checked my spam folder and nothing there either. Has the system been glitchy lately? Really don't want to miss any deadlines since their college apps are due soon!

Thanks for responding! I already checked spam/junk but nothing there. 5 days though? That makes me feel better that I'm not the only one experiencing delays.

The FAFSA's new system has been experiencing some intermittent delays with the parent contribution email invitations. A few things to try: 1. Have your son log back into his studentaid.gov account and verify he correctly entered your email address 2. Check that he completed the "Invite Contributors" section fully (some students miss the final confirmation step) 3. Make sure your son actually submitted his portion, not just saved it If all those check out, it's likely just the system backlog. The Department of Education confirmed they're experiencing higher than normal traffic with the 2025-2026 application cycle. Parent emails are typically sent within 24-48 hours, but can take up to a week during peak periods.

Thank you so much! I'll have him double-check he actually completed the submission process. It's possible he just saved it without finalizing. These teens sometimes skip the last step! Really appreciate the detailed advice.

If your son properly submitted his section and you still don't receive the email after 5-7 days, you might want to contact Federal Student Aid directly. Their phone lines are notoriously busy this time of year though - I spent 3 hours on hold last week before getting disconnected. I ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual person at FSA without the wait. They have a service that holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of frustration. There's a demo video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent confirmed there was a glitch with my parent invitation and manually triggered the email while I was on the call. Might be worth trying if the delay continues.

Does that Claimyr thing actually work? I tried calling FSA last year and gave up after being on hold for 2 hours. Is it expesnive?

This happened to me last month! The email delay turned out to be because my daughter checked the wrong box about whether I provide more than 50% of her support. There's a verification step after they submit their part that can trigger delays if certain answers don't match up with what the system expects. Have your son log back in and review his dependency questions - especially the ones about parent support and household information. The FAFSA system is extra picky with the 2025-26 application because of the new SAI calculation. Even small inconsistencies can trigger review flags that delay the parent email invitation.

Oh wow, I didn't think about the dependency questions possibly causing delays. I'll definitely have him check those too. Thanks for the insight!

the whole system is TRASH!!! i never got ANY emails for my son's fafsa and missed his priority deadline. called FSA 6 TIMES and they kept saying "it's coming" but nothing ever did. ended up having to drive to his school's financial aid office and do it from their computers with their help. DON'T TRUST THE EMAILS JUST GO IN PERSON IF YOU CAN!!!

I'm sorry you had that experience. For anyone reading this thread: if you're approaching an important deadline and haven't received the parent email, you can also try an alternative solution: you and your student can sit down together with both of your FSA IDs ready, and complete the application in one session. The student completes their part, then immediately hands the device to the parent who logs in with their own FSA ID to complete the parent section. This bypasses the email invitation process entirely.

UPDATE: Mystery solved! Turns out my son didn't actually finish his portion - he thought he submitted but only saved his progress. When we logged back in together, there was a big "CONTINUE" button on his dashboard. After he completed the final steps and properly invited me, I got the email within an hour. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions! For anyone else having this issue, definitely double-check with your student that they fully completed their part and didn't just save their progress.

Thanks for posting this update! This is actually one of the most common issues we see with the parent email invitation process. The FAFSA redesign for 2025-2026 has made the submission vs. save distinction more clear than previous years, but students still miss it. For future applicants reading this thread: there should be a confirmation page and email if the student section was properly submitted.
