2025-2026 FAFSA not asking for AGI - Will IRS auto-retrieve our tax info?

I'm really confused about the new FAFSA simplification this year. When completing the 2025-2026 FAFSA, I noticed they didn't ask for our Adjusted Gross Income from our 2023 tax return like they used to. They only asked if my spouse and I filed jointly. Does anyone know if the Department of Education will automatically pull our AGI information directly from the IRS? I'm worried our application isn't complete and might get rejected because we didn't manually enter income figures. Or is this just part of the new streamlined process? I've been stressing about this for days and can't find a clear answer on studentaid.gov.

Yes, this is part of the new FAFSA Simplification Act! The Department of Education now directly retrieves your tax information from the IRS through their data-sharing agreement. That's why they only asked if you filed jointly - they'll pull the actual AGI figures automatically. It's designed to make the process easier and reduce errors. Your application won't be rejected for this reason.

Oh thank goodness! I was so worried something was wrong. Do you know how long it typically takes for them to retrieve the tax info? And will I be able to see what they pulled from the IRS somewhere on my application?

same here i was freaking out!!! thought i did something wrong but guess its just the new system??

The new system is much better! I just finished helping my daughter with her FAFSA this week. You'll notice they only ask for your consent to retrieve the tax information and whether you filed jointly. The IRS data transfer happens behind the scenes to calculate your SAI (Student Aid Index, which replaced the old EFC). You should be able to see a summary of the retrieved information in your FAFSA confirmation, though it won't show everything they pulled. If you're worried, you can always call FSA to confirm everything transferred correctly.

wait so do we still need to do the IRS DRT thing or is that gone too??? i remember having to click through to the IRS site last year but didnt see that option this time

I don't trust this "automatic" system at ALL. Last year they messed up my daughter's aid because they pulled the wrong tax year data somehow. Then we had to go through verification hell for 3 months. The financial aid office kept sending us in circles. Has anybody actually CONFIRMED that the correct data is being pulled? There's no transparency in this process!!

I had similar concerns but called FSA to verify. The representative confirmed they are pulling the correct 2023 tax information for the 2025-2026 FAFSA. You just need to make sure you've given consent for the data transfer during the application. If you're worried, you can request a Student Aid Report (SAR) after submission which shows a summary of your application, including financial information used to calculate your SAI.

I just used Claimyr to get through to FSA yesterday about this exact issue! It got me past the phone queue in about 10 minutes when I'd been trying for days. The agent confirmed that yes, they automatically pull your tax info now as part of the simplification process. Check out claimyr.com or their demo video: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ - it's seriously worth it if you need to actually talk to someone at FSA about your application status. The agent I spoke with was super helpful and confirmed everything transferred correctly from our tax returns.

Thank you for this suggestion! I might try this if I don't get confirmation soon that our information transferred correctly. Did the FSA agent tell you how long the tax retrieval process typically takes?

The agent said the initial retrieval happens within 3-5 days after submission, but it can take up to 2 weeks for everything to fully process in their system. You should get your SAI calculation after that, assuming there are no issues that trigger verification.

does anyone know what happens if u filed an amended tax return for 2023?? will they see the updated numbers or the original ones???? im freaking out bc i forgot to ask this when i submitted!!

Great question! If you filed an amended return (Form 1040-X), the system should pull your most recent amended data, but there can sometimes be delays. If your amended return was processed after you submitted your FAFSA, you might need to contact your school's financial aid office to provide the updated information. They can make professional judgment adjustments if needed.

my cousin said they still had to enter their w-2 info manually is that right???

The new FAFSA still requires some information to be entered manually, especially if you have income that isn't reported on your tax return. W-2 information is generally captured in your tax return, but there are specific scenarios where you might need to report additional income. For example, if you have untaxed income or foreign income that wasn't reported to the IRS, you would need to enter that manually. But for most people with standard W-2 employment, the automatic retrieval should capture everything.

UPDATE: I got my Student Aid Report today (took about 10 days) and can confirm the IRS data transfer worked! My SAI calculation includes our correct income information even though we never manually entered it. For anyone else wondering - yes, the new system really does pull your tax info automatically. Such a relief!

Thanks for coming back to update us! This is great confirmation that the system is working as intended. Did your SAR show a detailed breakdown of the financial information they pulled, or just the final SAI number?

This is so helpful to hear! I'm still waiting for my SAR but this gives me confidence that everything will work out. Did you notice any differences in your aid eligibility compared to previous years with the new SAI calculation versus the old EFC system?

This thread has been so reassuring! I'm a first-time FAFSA filer and was completely panicked when I didn't see the usual income fields. It's amazing how much simpler this new process is compared to what my older siblings went through. One thing I'm curious about - does anyone know if there are any specific situations where the automatic retrieval might not work? Like if your parents are divorced or if you have complex tax situations? I want to make sure I'm prepared in case anything goes wrong with the data transfer.

Great question! From what I've learned, there are a few situations where the automatic retrieval might have hiccups. If your parents are divorced, each parent who needs to complete the FAFSA will need to give separate consent for their own tax data retrieval. Complex tax situations like having foreign income, filing separate returns when married, or having significant business income might require additional manual entry or verification. Also, if there's a mismatch between the SSN on your FAFSA and your tax return, that could cause issues. The system is pretty robust though - if there are problems with the automatic retrieval, you'll usually get notified and given the option to enter information manually or through verification with your school's financial aid office.
