How to survive unemployment financially while waiting for NYS Department of Labor benefits
Lost my job at a manufacturing plant in Rochester two weeks ago and I'm honestly panicking about money. Filed for unemployment immediately but haven't heard anything back from NYS Department of Labor yet. My savings are basically nonexistent and rent is due in 10 days. What are people doing to survive financially while waiting for benefits to kick in? I know unemployment takes time to process but bills don't wait. Any advice on making it through these first few weeks would be really appreciated.

First thing - file your weekly claims even if your initial claim isn't approved yet. NYS Department of Labor can backdate payments once everything processes. For immediate help, check with 211 (dial 2-1-1) for local food banks and emergency assistance programs. Many utilities have hardship programs that can delay shutoffs if you call them proactively. Also look into local churches and community centers - they often have emergency funds for situations exactly like this.

•Thank you! I didn't know about the weekly claims thing. Should I be doing that every week even though I haven't gotten approved yet?

Been there myself last year. Contact your landlord ASAP and explain the situation - most are understanding if you communicate early rather than waiting until rent is overdue. For food, hit up local food pantries immediately. Don't wait until you're completely broke. Many require no paperwork and some are drive-through now. Also check if your county has emergency rental assistance programs - Monroe County had some good ones when I needed help.

•This is solid advice. I was embarrassed to use food pantries at first but honestly they saved me during my unemployment period.

ugh this brings back memories... the waiting is the WORST part! i had to sell some stuff on facebook marketplace just to keep lights on. also if you have credit cards try calling them - some will do payment deferrals if you explain you lost your job. don't just stop paying without calling first though

If you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor to check on your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to actual agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. I was stuck in adjudication for weeks and couldn't get through on the phone - this helped me finally talk to someone who could explain what was holding up my claim. Might be worth checking out if you need to get answers about your application.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already strapped for cash.

•It's way less than what you'd lose from delayed benefits. The peace of mind alone was worth it for me when I was in your situation.

Check with local community action agencies too - they often have emergency assistance funds for rent and utilities. Also don't forget about SNAP benefits (food stamps) - you can apply online and sometimes get approved quickly. The application process is separate from unemployment so you can do both.

•Have you been filing your weekly claims? Even if your initial claim is still processing, you need to keep certifying or you'll lose those weeks of benefits.

I'm in a similar situation in Syracuse - lost my restaurant job 3 weeks ago and still waiting on my claim to process. What helped me get through was plasma donation if you're eligible (BioLife pays around $50-100 per donation), and I signed up for gig work like DoorDash just to have some immediate income while waiting. Also reach out to Salvation Army and Catholic Charities - they both have emergency assistance programs that can help with rent if you're about to be evicted. The key is applying for everything NOW, don't wait until you're completely out of money. Stay strong, the benefits will come eventually!
