How do employers respond to unemployment claims - NYS Department of Labor process?

I just got laid off from my job at a manufacturing company and filed my unemployment claim with NYS Department of Labor yesterday. My former supervisor mentioned something about them having to 'respond' to my claim but didn't really explain what that means. Do employers automatically fight unemployment claims or is there a specific process they follow? I'm worried they might try to deny my benefits even though the layoff wasn't my fault. Has anyone dealt with this before?

If it was a legitimate layoff due to lack of work, most employers will confirm that and you shouldn't have issues.
