Parent PLUS Loan application deadline - will I miss out?

I'm freaking out a little because my son just told me we need to apply for a Parent PLUS loan to cover his remaining college costs for fall semester. His financial aid package wasn't enough, and I had no idea there might be deadlines for these loans. Does the Parent PLUS loan have a hard deadline like the FAFSA itself? The university billing office is sending us past-due notices already, but I can't get through to anyone at financial aid to ask questions. Will I miss my chance if I don't apply ASAP?

theres no federal deadline for plus loans but each school has their own deadlines for when they need it processed. call your kids school asap

Thank you! I've been trying to call but can't get through to anyone in financial aid. Just endless hold times and then disconnects.

Unlike the FAFSA which has specific federal deadlines, Parent PLUS loans can technically be applied for throughout the academic year. However, there are three important timing factors to consider: 1. Your school's financial aid disbursement schedule - they need time to process and certify the loan 2. Payment deadlines for tuition and housing bills 3. Time needed for credit checks and potential appeals if denied I'd recommend applying immediately since you're already getting past-due notices. The application itself only takes about 20 minutes on studentaid.gov, but processing at the school level can take 2-3 weeks. You'll need your FSA ID, your student's information, and be prepared for the credit check.

This is really helpful information, thank you. Do you know if I'll need my tax info again? I already submitted all that for the FAFSA months ago.

You won't need to resubmit tax documents for the PLUS loan application. Since you've already completed the FAFSA, the system already has that information. You'll primarily need: - Your FSA ID to log in - Basic personal information - Student information (name, SSN, date of birth) - School information (which should be pre-populated if your student listed it on their FAFSA) - Requested loan amount The system will run a credit check, but it's looking for adverse credit history (defaults, bankruptcies, etc.), not a full credit score analysis like private loans would require.

This is NOT entirely accurate. PLUS loans DO require credit checks even though they already have your FAFSA info! They're NOT looking at income (that's for FAFSA), they check if you have any major credit issues in the last 5 years. My husband got denied because of an old medical collection he didn't even know about!!! We had to get an endorser.

I went through this panic last year! There's technically no federal cutoff date, but your school probably has internal deadlines. The real issue is that PLUS loans require school certification, and if your billing is already past due, you're definitely cutting it close. Have you tried asking for a payment extension from the billing office while you get the PLUS loan sorted?

I didn't even think about asking for an extension! That's a great idea. I'll call the billing office today and see if they can work with us while we get the loan processed.

my daughter started college last yr and we had same problem!! the fafsa only gave her like $5500 in loans which is NOTHING compared to what college costs now days. the parent plus loan saved us but yeah its stressful when u don't know the deadlines. just apply ASAP and call the school everyday until someone helps u!

I work in a university financial aid office. While there's no federal deadline for Parent PLUS loans, you should apply immediately given your situation. Here's what you need to know: 1. Most schools want PLUS loans certified before billing due dates 2. Average processing time is 1-3 weeks depending on school staffing 3. If you're denied due to credit, you'll need additional time for appeals or finding an endorser 4. Some schools have cutoff dates for each term Call your financial aid office first thing tomorrow morning - specifically ask for a financial aid counselor who handles PLUS loans. Also check if your student can request an additional unsubsidized loan if you're denied the PLUS loan (this is standard federal policy but the student must initiate it).

Thank you for the insider perspective! I've been trying to call financial aid for days with no luck. I'll try again tomorrow morning when they open.

Has anybody else noticed that the new SAI calculation has made it harder to qualify for financial aid? Our family income is about $85k and barely got anything. We're having to do Parent PLUS for almost everything! I bet that's why so many people are scrambling for these loans now.

The Student Aid Index (SAI) replacing the old Expected Family Contribution (EFC) has changed some calculations, but overall it shouldn't dramatically reduce aid eligibility for most families. The issue is more likely that federal loan limits haven't increased to match rising tuition costs. Direct subsidized/unsubsidized loans for dependent students max out at $5,500-$7,500 annually depending on year in school, while college costs continue to rise. That gap is why many families need PLUS loans regardless of their SAI score.

If you're struggling to get through to the financial aid office, try using Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was in your exact situation last semester - couldn't get anyone on the phone for weeks and was stressing about missing deadlines. A friend told me about this service that gets you through to an actual human at student aid offices. Saved me so much time and stress! They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ

I've never heard of this service. Does it really work? I've been trying for days to get through to someone.

Yes, it definitely worked for me! Instead of waiting on hold for hours or getting disconnected, I was connected to an actual person who helped process my Parent PLUS application. Saved me from missing my son's tuition deadline last semester.

Quick update on my situation from before - I applied for the Parent PLUS loan on September 22nd last year (super late) and it was processed in time for my daughter's fall semester, but it was REALLY cutting it close. The school gave us a 14-day extension on the bill. Just wanted to give you some hope that it can be done even when you're up against tight deadlines!

That's encouraging to hear! I just filled out the application online this morning. How long did it take for you to hear back about approval?

I got the credit decision immediately after submitting the application - it was just a matter of minutes. The longer part was waiting for the school to certify it, which took about 10 days in our case. Hang in there!

PARENT PLUS LOANS ARE A TRAP!!!! Interest rates are over 7.5% and there's a 4.2% origination fee they take right off the top!!!! Try to find LITERALLY ANY OTHER WAY to pay before getting these loans. I'm $96,000 in debt from Parent PLUS and my daughter graduated 3 years ago. I'll be paying until I'm 70 years old.

same here! wish someone had told me how bad they were before i signed up. no forgiveness either 😭

Update: I finally got through to financial aid after trying that Claimyr service someone recommended here. The good news is I can still apply for the PLUS loan and there's technically no federal deadline. The bad news is our school has an internal processing deadline of 2 weeks before the end of the term for any aid to be applied to the current semester. They're going to put a temporary hold on the late fees while my application processes. Thanks everyone for your help!

Great news! Make sure you specify the correct loan period when applying (likely Fall/Spring for the full academic year) and remember you'll need to complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN) along with the application. The MPN is good for 10 years so you won't need to redo it each year if you need PLUS loans for future years - just the application portion.

So glad you got through! That two-week cushion before end of term is actually pretty generous compared to some schools. Good luck with everything!
