Best FAFSA tutorial videos for parents? Official ones aren't helpful!

I'm trying to find some actually USEFUL FAFSA tutorial videos specifically for parents. I watched the official ones from studentaid.gov and honestly they're not very helpful (feels like they're just reading the form instructions out loud lol). I've been searching YouTube for days but can't seem to find any legitimate step-by-step guides from trustworthy sources. I already completed the first section of my daughter's application and I'm waiting for the confirmation email (day 3 now, still nothing). I want to be fully prepared for when the email finally arrives so we don't lose any time with scholarships and grants. Has anyone found any good parent-focused FAFSA video tutorials from colleges, financial advisors, or other reputable sources? I'm specifically confused about how to properly report our retirement accounts and a small business we own. Thanks!

have u checked Khan Academy? they have some decent fafsa vids. not perfect but way better than the govt ones

I haven't! That's a good idea - I use Khan Academy for my younger son's math homework all the time but didn't think to look there for FAFSA stuff. Will check it out, thanks!

As a college financial aid advisor, I recommend these resources: 1. The College Board has excellent parent-specific FAFSA tutorials that clearly explain the retirement and business ownership reporting (which don't count toward your SAI calculation if reported correctly) 2. The National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA) has detailed FAFSA videos - slightly technical but thorough 3. Many state higher education agencies have better tutorials than the federal ones Regarding your confirmation email delay - that's unfortunately common with the new system. If you don't receive it by day 5, you should contact FSA directly. Make sure to check your spam folder too!

Thank you so much! I'll look up the College Board videos right away since they address exactly what I need help with. I had no idea state agencies might have their own tutorials - I'll check our state education department website. And thanks for the tip about the confirmation email. It's not in spam, I've been checking. If I don't get it by Friday (day 5), I'll try to contact them directly.

I found that my daughter's university financial aid office had MUCH better tutorials on their website than the official FAFSA ones. Maybe check your kid's prospective schools?

That's brilliant! She's applying to 5 schools so I'll check all their financial aid pages. Thanks for the suggestion!

Just a warning - be careful with random YouTube videos about FAFSA! My husband found one that seemed professional but gave completely wrong information about how to report our home equity and almost messed up our whole application. The video creator was secretly promoting a paid "FAFSA optimization service" that was sketchy. I ended up using videos from Iowa Student Loan (even though we're not in Iowa) because they were SUPER clear about parent responsibilities and how to report different types of assets. They even had specific sections on business ownership reporting!

Yikes - thanks for the warning! I've been wary of random videos which is why I'm looking for recommendations from trusted sources. I'll definitely check out the Iowa Student Loan videos. The business reporting is my biggest concern since we have a small LLC that I'm not sure how to categorize properly.

I had the same problem with the phone lines, but I found a service called Claimyr that got me through to a FAFSA agent in about 20 minutes after struggling for days. They have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ Basically they wait on hold for you and call when an agent is available. Saved me hours of frustration when I needed to fix an error on my daughter's dependency status. Their website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out.

Don't feel bad - I'm a CPA and even I got confused with some of the parent contribution sections of FAFSA! The instructions are terrible. My daughter's college financial aid night had much better explanations than any government materials. For assets like retirement accounts and small businesses, here are the basic rules: - Retirement accounts (401k, IRA, etc) are NOT reported on FAFSA - If your business has less than 100 employees, it's considered "small" and the value is NOT included in your assets - If you're a sole proprietor with 100+ employees, then you report the net value Hope that helps!

Thank you! That's really helpful. We have only 6 employees so I'm relieved to hear we don't need to report the business value. I was worried because it's a significant portion of our net worth. This is exactly the kind of specific information I was hoping to find in a tutorial video.

why r u waiting 4 a confirmation email??? u don't need it to continue - just log back in w/ ur saved username and password. the email is just a receipt basically

Wait, really?? The last screen I saw said I needed to verify my email before continuing, and to check my inbox for the verification link. Are you saying I can just log back in anyway? I'll try that right now!

UPDATE: I just tried logging in without confirming my email and it worked! I'm able to continue with the application. Thanks for that tip - would have kept waiting otherwise!

For those looking for comprehensive FAFSA tutorials, I highly recommend checking out your state's 529 plan website. Many states have excellent parent-focused FAFSA guides that are more detailed than federal resources. For example, New York's 529 site has step-by-step videos that cover complex scenarios like business ownership and investment properties. Also, if you're still struggling with the business reporting after watching videos, consider scheduling a free consultation with a fee-only financial planner who specializes in college funding. Many offer 30-minute sessions specifically for FAFSA questions. The National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA) has a directory where you can find qualified planners in your area. Good luck with your daughter's application!
